Inspired by Glen Campbells "Gentle On My Mind" 
not surprisingly once interpreted though the filter 
of the stories floating 
like high density polyethylene garbage
filling the dusty chambers that I call my frontal lobes,
the meaning and verbiage of the point I'd meant to make
crashed along the shores of the streams
I'd tried to navigate.

It was September the nineteenth,
international talk like a pirate day. 
I was celebrating by watching oil drain
from a generator to a bucket
I was deep in thought trying to remember
the name of a guy I used to know 
who told me a joke that centered on
a cow peeing on a flattened rock. 

A fella  came in who knew my name 
dressed just like the kind of guy
who'd make a living selling tools
He knelt down before me blocking my view
as the oil went from a stream to a steady drip. 
His eyes were bright and blue as he began his hustle,
like he rehearsed as if, fame and fortune could be 
just a few carefully chosen syllables away 
There was some gizmo from Snap-on
that probably cost more
than either one of us was getting paid.

He held it up like one might hold a new born baby, 
if that newborn baby were bright red and had a cord.
Enthusiasm infectious I said wow 
in the most sincere expression decorum would allow. 
He went on and on about features, 
specifications, color choices, and finance options. 
When he finished speaking I wanted to applaud
if only let him take a breath and take a bow. 

I'm sure I was one affirmative utterance away
from getting a second verse, a second act. 
Soon I could soon be holding a brand new shiny thing
and shown a row of dots on which to sign,
I could make payments, boosting my status 
with the friendly younger fellas
who sell expensive tools from the snap on truck.
I really hadn't moved and hadn't really said much
as the bright young man from Snap-on carried on. 
Suddenly a glance around the room, 
told him my boss had finally gotten off the phone. 

Dude packed up and made his exit 
like a toddler who'd just spotted Santa Clause. 
He said in case he hadn't mentioned it
he could get me the metal shiny thing almost at cost. 
He handed me his card and said if I questions
or comments I should surely call on the phone. 
Next month he would be back, 
He called me buddy and just like that 
the friendly guy from Snap-on, he was gone.
