Our “ethereal mix” series is continued by the Russian artist Nika Maurer aka Lost Helmet aka Lutin.

As part of the first project, Nika shared the compositions “Womb” and “Steel” over the past month, as well as the double single “True Gore apt. 1/True Gore apt. 2". Apart from self-released “Womb”, both releases were presented on the Moscow label Eternal Delight.

Under a different nickname, Maurer presented the album “Gradual Change of Pleasure” at TESTFM this spring. On September 1st, she released one more mix specially for the platform.

ethereal mix 064: Lost Helmet

In the second part of his album UA TRIBAL, Kyiv producer @thelazyjesus delves deeper towards the roots of Ukrainian music. Staying true to his multicultural style, he channels traditional pipe melody through rich percussion and a bass groove. The Lazy Jesus' dive into musical anthropology feels similar to Ken Russell's movie ‘Altered States’: the listener enters a trance, as if traversing all ages of the universe to reach the origins of culture.

To create this album, The Lazy Jesus collaborated with a cult Peruvian duo Dengue Dengue Dengue and an Argentinian producer JaiJiu. DNGDNGDNG and Ehor have in common not only their love of masks, which are an essential part of their performances, but also a powerful bass groove with broken rhythms, through which the artists transmit traditional music. The artists met at a DNG performance, and Ehor urged them to take a photo together while wearing masks used by his group. As an aftermath of this acquaintance, they remixed the first single of the album, SMOK. It turned out that JaiJiu and The Lazy Jesus made a very special duo despite living on different continents and having never met in person. The JaiJiu’s remix expands on the album's rich noir tribal sound with heavy bass influenced by cumbia and Argentinian dance music.

The album's recurring theme involves a play on traditional brass instruments, which are represented here through samples and electronic imitation. Ehor's trembita and sopilka (traditional Ukrainian wooden wind instruments) hypnotize the listener and guide them through the tracks. Trembita is a horn made of wood that translates as "trompita" in Tunisian, connecting two folklores represented in the record. The album's genre can be described as tribal bass infused with multi-layered tambourine percussion and a lyrical Ukrainian heritage.

Musician and producer, Ehor Havrylenko has been a part of many Ukrainian indie and jazz bands, including The Cancel, Hapochka, Dao Park, New Brain Trio, and gurt [О] before launching his solo career as The Lazy Jesus. He also worked as an A&R for the cult label Masterskaya, owned by a famous Ukrainian artist Ivan Dorn.

Ehor is now a member of the GRV GRV community and a resident of the Kyiv club HVLV. With the first part of the album UA TRIBAL, Ehor participated in numerous radio broadcasts and festivals in Germany, France, Spain, Poland, Slovakia, and Lithuania.

Pan Daijing announces her debut album, ‘Lack 惊蛰’, on PAN this July.

Culminating as the purgative ‘finale’ to her improvisational live performances, Pan Daijing’s debut album also offers an insight to her future works. The process was intuitive and raw, born out of her previous explorations. Over the past 2 years, she has composed, recorded and edited different concerts and field recordings across Europe, China, and Canada, forming the basis of the record. Arriving as her first full-length album, ‘Lack 惊蛰’ was crafted from this long, painstaking mental and physical practice.

Daijing’s pieces are created around a very intense and intimate mental catharsis, often expressed through a close physical interaction with strangers in her live sets which seek to engage them in a highly personal way. “When I was finalising this album, they didn’t feel like tracks to me anymore, but more like a psychoanalytical process,” she says. “I saw myself being this absurd, mad person ‘acting’ out the sounds… It’s rather physical, and became like a mindgame. All things came out naturally as part of me.”

The narrative of the album presents a perspective of the world as ‘the theatre of our minds’ - where Daijing sees the record as an ‘opera piece’ in its storytelling and drama.

The release is mastered by Rashad Becker at D&M, featuring photography by Ralf Marsault, and artwork by Bill Kouligas.

Lack

Pan Daijing - Act of The Empress 皇后之作 (PAN 79)

The album is influenced by skipping CDs and other digital glitches, however, you will find no IDM nostalgia here. The new tracks are tight and direct, consisting of a small amount of very short sounds. An attentive ear will catch the echoes of tribal, house, and trance productions here, but they are merely hints. As tested in big rooms under high pressure, this new LP is a hard-hitter.
