for the last 25 years i've been consistently inspired by a lot of the electronic music that's come out of detroit.  so to honor that inspiration and tradition i've made this experimental electronic version of 'a case for shame' and named it 'honor detroit version'

‘The Low Hum’ was another broken down electronic, instrumental track and I gave it to my friend Emily Zuzik and what’s funny is, I didn’t even tell her what the album was about the theme of music for empty cities at two o’clock in the morning and she basically wrote these lyrics about being in a hotel room at two o’clock in the morning in an empty city. 

So maybe she is psychic. I don’t know but it’s a song without a chorus, which I like. And her voice has this quiet sort of disembodied quality to it, which was really hard for her because she is a big singer. If it was up to her, she would have sang it broadway style but I wanted it to be that sort of disconcerting, warm, womb like quality, where the vocals are almost like someone singing to themselves instead of projecting for all the world to hear, it’s sort of like someone in a bath tub, in a hotel next to the Stuttgart train station at three o’clock in the morning singing to yourself in the bath tub. So vocally I think that’s what I was trying to get her to do.

The Day was written in a hotel room in Spain at dawn when I hadn’t slept. It was a beautiful hotel room, a beautiful perfect hotel room and it was six or seven in the morning. I wrote it on a acoustic guitar and recorded it on my phone, brought it home and re-recorded it with old broken down electronics that I have in my studio

it takes weeks, even years, to write a song, but when moby was challenged to write and record a song in just 2 days by us radio station npr, he surprised everyone by having the track finished in just 8 hours!   he and collaborator kelli scarr had so much time left over, they recorded a second version of the song. and after that, they gave a small concert for the radio station staff. 

moby generally works alone in his new york apartment, but for npr’s challenge, he was asked to bring along a collaborator. he picked kelli scarr, a brooklyn-based singer-songwriter with a breathtaking voice who features on the title track from moby’s recent album ‘wait for me’.

next, they were given a series of words to chose from. moby picked the word "flight." scarr chose "sunday.”

from here, moby puts the card with the word "sunday" printed on it, along with the photograph, on a nearby chair, picks up a bass guitar and immediately starts to play a riff in the key of e. this hastily played bass line becomes the bedrock for their new song.  following this, the multi-instrumentalist adds guitar, keys, drums, and finally he and kelli write and record the vocals. just eight hours after arriving at the studio, “gone to sleep" is recorded.

Remixes!', an album consisting of reworked versions of tracks from the critically acclaimed 'Wait For Me', released through Moby’s label 'Little Idiot' last year. Moby will release Destroyed Remixed on 30th April, a 2CD collection of remixes of songs from Moby's 2011 studio album, Destroyed.

Moby on 'A Case For Shame':

“I had this idea to make a video for ‘A Case For Shame’ which actually ended up informing the entire visual scheme of Innocents. In the video, someone dies – maybe they killed themselves out of a sense of shame – and they enter this other world, populated by these ghost creatures wearing masks. They look scary, but they’re actually covering their face because they’re ashamed. When you see someone wearing a scary mask, the first thought is, “What’s going on? That’s intimidating.” But they’re actually hiding – it’s the most blatant act of concealing oneself. ‘A Case For Shame” is one of two songs I collaborated on with Cold Specks. She’s quite shy, and preferred to be left alone in the studio, so I’d hit ‘record,’ go have some tea, then come back in and press ‘stop.’”
