My name is Craft and this week we’re in Detroit covering the 2015 Movement Electronic Music Festival with official press photos and video interviews of artists performing this year. Check our website for past photo galleries and interviews with artists.
I will be performing at Detroit Movement afterparties this weekend at Northern Lights, Exodus and The Works.

This week on the show we present Deployment Strategies from Porto in Portugal.

Dj since 2006 under the name Wasteyouth and co-founder of the collective “ Are Friends Electrik?” hosting underground parties in Portugal. He runs a weekly radio show called “Resistance Is Futile ” on Seance Radio together with Joanna Jago. In 2013 he started producing under the name Deployment Strategies. He sent us this really great 2-hour live set, a journey from experimental to techno. Performed live by Deployment Strategies.

Bio:
Deployment Strategies is the production project of Vitor Sousa, natural from Porto (Portugal). Since 2006 he has been djing under the name Wasteyouth and with the simplest of goals: "put music... loud... in a dark place".
He is one of the founders of the collective and electronic music community “ Are Friends Electrik? ”, with mind set to discover and share music, gathering like ­minded individuals and hosting underground parties where the music was the common denominator.

Currently he also hosts the weekly radio show “ Resistance Is Futile ”, airing on Seance Radio in the UK, together with Joanna Jago.

In 2013 he decided to go inward in his search for sounds and so Deployment Strategies was born. With this artist/label project he aims to live in a world of frequencies organizing sonic events in what some may call music.

South Africa breeds so many new rhythms and electronic music styles at such a fast pace that it’s hard to keep up. This thriving musical ecosystem has produced genres like kwaito, shangaan electro or the South African afro-house style (and its multiple subgenres like durban or bacardi house), but now there’s a whole new genre to add to that list. Ladies and gentlemen, we’d like to introduce you to the entrancing gqom style and its biggest champion Jumping Back Slash.

This hard-to-pronounce genre is the latest to come out of this exciting scene and the man making the rest of thee world pay attention is Jumping Back Slash. After moving to South Africa he fell in love with a new sound that was coming out of Durban, where kids fired up cracked copies of Fruity Loops and started reducing afro-house and kwaito to its most basic elements. Everything gets stripped away until all you have is a syncopated beat, a menacing bassline and a few vocal chops thrown in for good measure. The results are minimalistic, dark and hypnotic, and we can’t get enough of it.

Inspired by this fresh wave of club music coming from the South African underground, Jumping Back Slash has been putting out a stream of amazing tracks in the gqom style, and his contribution to the Upper Cuts series confirms that he’s on a roll right now. In true gqom fashion Kanganga is dark, menacing, uplifting and danceable, all at the same time. This repetitive yet unpredictable beat serves as the perfect example of a sound which is still taking its first steps, but is already positioning itself to become the next big thing to come out of the South African dance music scene. Sigha’s lauded Metabolism album is further commended with a remix EP for Token 77. With three highly qualified label newcomers enlisted to the task of reimagining aspects of the album, the music is reworked into a new context to powerful effect. 
 
Wata Igarashi’s flourishing recognition as a producer with striking competence and flair has marked him as a valuable affiliate on the record. He demonstrates different areas of focus with two new versions of Black Massing. The Daylight Breaks Remix opens up the high-end, expressing the delicate harmonics of the original with rushing upward arpeggios. The Dusk Falls Remix instead hones in on the deep and anticipatory nature of its foundation. 
 
Marco Shuttle’s foreboding Morning Star remix feels skilfully subtractive, magnifying elements by adding space and drawing focus to its melodic asides. Function plays with the contemplative nature of Down in his version, adding dynamic percussion and energy while retaining its expression and depth.

Soma welcome a new artist to the label as Maltese based KONTAL debuts with What Lies Below. Having only begun the project at the tail end of 2017, Kontal steps up with four solid, dance floor ready tracks.

Broken Home kicks off with tough, jacked up drums hammering full pelt while disruptive synths set the tone. Trauma deliver yet more warped Techno with a pulsating synth hook building gradually throughout. Reflect brings out the more hypnotic and emotive side to Kontal as ethereal pads drift across more subtle percussive elements. Parallel closes Kontal’s debut Soma EP, keeping up the pace of previous tracks and creates a more dense and cerebral sound.

A well rounded and soundly produced EP, Kontal shows great depth of dance floor knowledge.

Andre Crom‘s home-base sits between Berlin and Barcelona, his label OFF Recordings once again comes up with the goods on Euphoria.

Brazilian Lucas Freire has been located in Barcelona for a number years, building up a reputation of excellence behind the decks. Using his self taught mixing skills, he is known to harness the floor vibe and gained huge respect for his dedication to the craft. His back catalogue of productions also include outings for labels such as Driving Forces, Different Is Different and Naked Lunch, as continues to make an impact.

Featured as the remixers on this package are two titans, firstly an artist known for hitting labels like Hotflush, Innervisions, and Mote Evolver, Oliver Deutschmann runs a multitude of imprints and is consistently influential in his work.

Supplying the second rework is the Belgian Tom Hades, who continues to play a part in OFF Recordings after his recent EP and appearances on a variety of labels like Sleaze, 1605 and Silent Steps.

For this DT:Premiere we selected the leading track “Euphoria” for its chunky, rolling flow, backed with a warm bassline, and quirky hook. The powerful rhythm is soon complemented with detuned metallic bells, innumerable claps pursuing a lush, energetic aura throughout.
