Millie & Andrea are Miles Whittaker and Andy Stott, fellow labelmates at Modern Love who collaborated on an occasional series of 12” releases between 2008 and 2010. It’s been four years since we last heard from them but they now return with “Drop The Vowels”, their debut album. Produced fast and loose through late 2013 / early 2014, it’s an album that recalls the strict and stripped funk of Anthony Shakir as much as it does Leila’s incredible debut ‘Like Weather’, eschewing the dark aesthetic both producers are best known for in favour of something much more visceral. It’s an album borne from a love of both pop and club music, made to evoke an adrenalised, hedonistic, as well as an emotional response.

Opener GIF RIFF brings to life a Gamelan edit stripped bare before the over-compressed ‘Stay Ugly’ breaks out with a tumbling, broken arrangement situated somewhere between Richard D James and Jai Paul. “Temper Tantrum” and “Spectral Source” follow, versions of tracks originally released on the second and third Daphne EP’s respectively, the former a rugged rave anthem tempered by blue strings, the latter a proper dancefloor destroyer recalling Shake’s mighty ‘Madmen’. ‘Corrosive’ flits between a fillibrating, arpeggiated steppers rhythm and a brutal jungle breakdown, while ‘Drop The Vowels’ further explores and strips bare bass & drums before the slow but jacking warehouse killer “Back Down” provides pure percussive abandon. Quay ends the set with something quieter, a sublime coda made entirely from field recordings.

HomeSick - Feelin' Me, Feelin' U

Miles is one half of Demdike Stare and Pendle Coven and has recorded in the past under the aliases Millie and MLZ. After almost 15 years writing music, this is the first release Miles is putting out under his own name and marks a turning point of sorts in his production style, or rather, in its sequencing. 'Facets' brings together different ends of his production style, unifying elements of the House and Techno he’s most commonly released as MLZ together with the more broken production signatures usually reserved for Millie and the darkened tribalism of Demdike Stare. “Flawed” opens the set with a Linn loop from the archives, stretched and slowed down with an intoxicated aesthetic that’s somewhere between House and Dub, before “Lustre” re-configures source material originally keyed in by labelmate Andy Stott with a nice line in squashed percussion. ‘Primer’ on the flip extends from a Demdike Stare outtake and veers off into an analogue drum machine ruckus, before “On The fly” ends the set with a recording made straight to mixing desk from an array of mis-wired and malfunctioning drum boxes, contact microphones and samplers, over at his studio The Mill earlier this year.

Suum Cuique (pronouned Soom Kwi-Kwe, Latin for "To Each His Own") follows the remit of Young Americans to explore uncharted, experimental, and personal synthscapes, guided by the hand of intuition with an entirely analogue array of machines. In 'Lithic Reduction' concrète textures grind like a millstone to release powdery clouds of analog dust, settling only to be dispersed by gusts of blackened distortion, whereas 'Red Binary' is distinctly electronic, revolving around muted radar bleeps like the resonance from SAW II soundtracking a speckly pill experience that's starting to go west. The album's centrepiece, the aptly titled 'Entropy' nods to the sublimely stoic work of Eleh, radiating microtonal bass shifts while a bitter northerly wind builds in intensity. 'Cyclic Redundancy' opens the flipside with a majestically submerged slab of completely obliterated and submerged 4/4, like an unholy collusion between Mika Vainio, Sandwell and Bernard Parmegiani soundtracking a trade union rave in the 1950's, before 'Even In Death...' conjures imagery of a eulogy given by a Mongolian throat singer with crows circling overhead.

'Rise Of Angel' is the brand new single from Luciano, and the first single to be taken from his forthcoming album, due in 2013.  However, for the many thousands of dedicated music fans who have made the pilgrimage to Luciano's hugely successful parties this Summer in Ibiza (the weekly Ushuaia sessions and Vagabundos at Pacha), or the many Cadenza parties around Europe and North America, 'Rise Of Angel' has already become the signature tune and musical hi-light in Luciano's sets, making its release a highly anticipated moment for the Cadenza faithful.

Clocking in at over 15 minutes, 'Rise Of Angel' is an epic slice of modern electronic dance music, the simply Balearic, synth and piano driven hook gently builds and teases with cinematic intent, the light percussion and organic beats working the old Luciano magic, it's no wonder that 'Rise Of Angel' has become one of the most talked about tracks of the Ibiza season this year.

For the remixes, Luciano has kept it in the family, enlisting the duties of fellow Cadenza artists Mirko Loko, UNER and Andrea Oliva to all lend their unique production styles to a solid set of reinterpretations.  The vinyl 12" is coupled with Mirko Loko's pulsating robotic workout, adding a more beats driven take on Luciano's original, and delving into the bass for a heavyweight techno flecked remix.

And bolstering the digital package, UNER weighs in with a dubbed out, rolling drum version, using the vocal FX to support the groove whilst the pianos ride over the mix, and Andrea Oliva goes straight for the 4/4 jugular with a remix that builds solid tribal beats to a crescendo, adding a new dimension to the Original with a choice vocal section.

'Rise Of Angel' will be Luciano's first release on his own Cadenza label since 2010's Lucien-N-Luciano's 'Cuidad De Luz' EP, and marks the start of another big chapter in his career, having spent the last couple of years building a passionate audience through hundreds of DJ performances around the world, the Vagabundos events and collaborating musically with artists such as Pharrrell (Neptunes) and Lenny Kravitz.  His forthcoming album will be his second full length collection (following 2009's ‘Tribute To The Sun’), and his label, Cadenza Records, will celebrate its 10th anniversary, so the future certainly looks bright for the Chilean producer and DJ.

After a bit of a pause, Andrea returns with an invigorated sense of funk and a bad case of scuffed shelltoes. A generation after Chicago House irreversibly infected the Northern club scene, Andrea soaks up and sweats out the latest footworking Chi-town developments with a distinctive melodic flourish and innate feel for the floor. 'Retail Juke' keenly latches on to that feeling of delirious suspension that marks the best productions from RP Boo, Roc, Nate or any of those agile young cats, matching their flighty rhythm programming toe-for-toe, while tweaking the vibes with a fine-cut pop sensibility. It opens up with an impatient metronome and sparkling Rhodes keys ushering in spasmodic sample edits and unregimented drums, honing that slow-fast thing that’s impossible to describe and so bizarrely effective. On the flip, 'Write-Off' sounds like an Ice Cream van taking a wrong turning and ending up wheel-deep in some hyperrealist dayglo forest without SatNav or a working sense of direction to hand. It finds that filigree balance of tension between rapid-fire sample textures, twinkling melodies and dragging bass undulations, keeping an implosive, centripetal sense of funk deep in the pocket and yet still quite melancholy in its own fidgety way.

Following on from a pair of Extended Players released in 2011 ("Passed Me By" / "We Stay Together") Andy Stott returns to Modern Love with 'Luxury Problems', an 8 track album of new material recorded over the last 12 months. Five of the tracks on the album feature the voice of Alison Skidmore, Andy's onetime Piano teacher whom he hadnt seen since he was a teenager back in 1996. There was no grand gesture in mind, it just sort of happened - but after almost a year of studio work the result is really quite unlike anything you'll have heard from him before. 'Numb' opens the album with Alison's voice; layered and looped but essentially left bare and exposed, tumbling into a dense shuffle, sort of somewhere between Theo Parrish and Sade, but more f*cked. 'Lost and Found' follows and deploys a growling rave bassline and a disturbed vocal, the beat assembling itself around a squashed Linndrum like a submerged Prince/Cameo production, haunted and impenetrable, but full of funk. 'Sleepless' started life as an African drum edit that sooner or later succumbed to Stott's intense rhythmic shifts. It's a sound that's been imitated countless times since the release of 'Passed Me By', here re-tooled and re-built for its next evolutionary phase. 'Hatch The Plan' ends the first half of the album with some heavily treated location recordings and a low end grind that probably doesnt quite prepare you for the vocal arrangements that follow - it's just a beautifuly inverted pop song. The second half opens with 'Expecting', the most recognisably 'Stott' moment on the album: a wrecked, deliriously knocked-out 4/4 shuffle deployed at halfspeed; those heavy kickdrums sucking in everything around them. 'Luxury Problems' is next and offers up the album's most quietly euphoric and open 5 minutes; conventional arrangements and drumloops disrupted by sharp disco bursts that mess with what you know: it's straight and beautiful and unbalanced and damaged, somehow all at once. "Up the box" switches up the narrative and goes somewhere else entirely, an extended intro that seems to build continuously for 3 minutes before breaking off into a slowed-down Amen edit, creating a kind of narcotic Jungle variant that fragments everything and ends just at the point you think it's going to go off, before "Leaving" finishes the album with an almost unbareably beautiful arrangement of voice and synth and a final key-change that takes you from joyful to forlorn in an instant.

01-Numb

Jack Dice is a new project on Modern Love from John Twells and Walker Chambliss. Twells, amongst very many other things, runs the Type label and has been producing music of various different disciplines and varieties over the last 15 years. Although he's never released anything on Modern Love before, he's a long time friend and associate of the label. Chambliss is the manager of Main Attrakionz and has been DJing with them for the last couple of years as the official 'Green Ova DJ'. 'Jack Dice' is fuelled by an interest in bass, Twells being a car audio nerd and Walker having an obsession with 90s southern rap music. The EP features their first tracks produced together, 4 pieces condensed and f*cked with over the last few months, somehow feeding Twells' interest in screwed analogue recording techniques through to a more percolated/propulsive trajectory aimed squarely at the floor. Those southern rap influences are definately there, but theres something odd and incongruous about the way the tracks have been pieced together - something that won't surprise anyone with any knowledge of where both these producers find musical nourishment. 

04-Radiant City

Rainer Veil are Liam Morley and Dan Valentine, two friends who met while studying contemporary music in the north of England. The pair began improvising and making drones in a dark basement before incorporating a broader palette and forming Rainer Veil as an ongoing concern last year. ‘Struck’ is their first EP and debut for Modern Love, following an appearance at the label Boiler Room takeover in August 2012.
The ‘Struck’ EP incorporates recordings made over the last year and extends from the rewired Jungle ruckus of the title track to the more emotive formation of ‘Wade In’ and ‘Bala’, through to the hazy closer ‘Yield’. There’s a melancholy pop pulsing at the heart of these tracks, coloured by a love of electronic mutations from UKG and Hardcore rave to House and Techno, most evident in the unusual recording process undertaken while constructing the EP. Each track was re-worked from radically different first drafts, often starting life as more recognisable and structured songs before being dismantled into more abstract shapes: percussion degraded and layered, vocals fed through analog delays, samples reworked at the wrong speed and re-sampled to tape for added warmth: the narrative all mixed up.

Bala

Millie and Andrea deliver what must count as the freshest, sickest twelve we've heard this year, a sort of mutant 2-Step/Techno/Wonky mashup produced with all the sharpened low-end brilliance you'd rightfully expect from two producers at the very top of their game. Ok, so they're not really called Millie, or Andrea, but it really isn't any big secret who's behind this twelve and if you look closely enough, all the information's there! Anyway, those are just the details right? it's the tunes that are doing strange things to us!

Millie and Andrea are nudging the controls further into the red with two squashed and deadly killers primed for the dance. Andrea takes charge of the A-side with a raved-up low-end wrecker complete with big f*ck-off sunset strings and a tumbling break that's one half junglist hardcore and one half peak-time dubside anthem. Millie, meanwhile, delivers a spacious woodblock destroyer on the flip, channelling Martyn and T++ with radiant blue chords and murderous stabs before a frenzied analogue bassline lets itself loose nudging towards the end. Pure dancefloor ruffage with a funked up heart - Massive twelve!
