For nearly a decade, Tycho has been known as the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with the release of Awake – his second LP for Ghostly International – the solo project has evolved into a three-piece band. Relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, the record is situated in the present, sounding more like Hansen than drawing from his influences. “This is, in many ways, the first true Tycho record.”

Following 2011’s Dive LP, the San Francisco-based designer toured extensively, and with a full band on stage, his sound coalesced into a percussive, organic whole. Zac Brown (guitars, bass) rejoined Scott on the road for this tour, but it was the particular addition of Rory O’Connor’s live drumming that ultimately sent Hansen back to the studio with a more precise vision. “After the tour, I decided that I wanted to capture the more energetic, driven sound of the live show on the next album,” Hansen recalls. Bringing musicians into Tycho’s creative process was a step towards expanding his own songwriting and advancing the project beyond its current sound.

In a cabin near Tahoe last winter, Zac and Scott began fleshing out the structure of the new record, but it wasn’t until they set up shop in the hills of Santa Cruz with Rory that it all fell into place. “It crystallized the vision of how the drums would come to the forefront on this record,” says Hansen. The sound was much more stripped-down and concise with more organic instruments in the fold. Songs like “Montana” and “Awake” are a departure from Tycho’s previous material – unique to the group effort poured into the songs on the new record – while “See” and “Dye” echo ideas from previous works, bridging a middle ground between the old and new. Working with Count Eldridge, who also engineered Dive, the team could fixate on the pulses that Tycho might previously layer under synthesizers and exhume them with distinct bass and guitar patterns.

Also known for his design work as ISO50, Hansen’s visual and sonic efforts have dovetailed throughout the course of his career. “This is the first time in my life I've dropped everything to focus on one artistic pursuit,” notes Hansen. Previous Tycho releases came to fruition when an amalgam of songs were nearing completion, but Awake is where music becomes the focus and true expression becomes the result.

Kodomo’s full-length debut release – titled Still Life – will be released on October 7th, 2008 on New York’s 5 Points Records.  This release features 9 original tracks and a bonus track, “Spira Mirablis” - currently featured in the MTV/Harmonix iPod video game “Phase.” The concept for the record was born of a series of photographs, each one serving as a springboard for the music.  The album explores how images of environments, landscapes, people, and objects are used to evoke musical ideas; each image giving rise to various rhythms, chords, and sonic textures.  The photos were taken in Italy, China, Japan, Switzerland, & around the US.  The CD release has a deluxe package that includes an expanded booklet featuring all 9 photos.

Hypercolour swiftly follow up the latest long player from Kris Wadsworth with another full artist album, and in keeping with the label’s eclectic tastes and vision, turn to one of the electronic scenes unsung heroes.

Luke Vibert has always operated on the fringes of each musical genre, but in doing so has become a well respected, and highly influential producer.  From his early work as Wagon Christ (Rising High/Ninja Tine), Kerrier District and Amen Andrews (Rephlex), Plug (Ninja), Butler Kiev (Planet Mu) and recordings under his own Luke Vibert moniker (including seminal albums for Mo Wax, Planet Mu and Warp Records), this is one artist who has come fully formed and in complete control of the direction his music takes.

So it’s an honour to have such esteemed talent onto Hypercolour, and on ‘Ridmik’, we get a very personal project from Vibert based largely around the Roland TB-303 bassline machine, and a lot of funk and soul, and one that echoes his seminal 2003 single for Warp, ‘I Love Acid’.

From the album opener ‘Ridmik’, Vibert sets out his stall; a playground of analogue machines come alive, the acid motif of the 303 providing a common thread throughout the eleven tracks.  Vibert injects plenty of funk , on ‘Acid Jacker’ for example where the bass skips over the 808 patterns whilst melodic synth lines weave their wondrous magic. ‘Acage’ marries soulful vocal scats and jazzy chords, all the while the 303 bubbling away, it’s the sort of acid you’d hear accompanying a Charlie Brown remake…

‘Ridmik’ could be classed as acid house, but it’s not really from the same source as the classic Chicago/Trax records of the late 80s, Vibert plays with tempos across the album, and for the most part, it’s a clean and soft sound as opposed to the dark and raw productions of the Chi-town cousins.  If anything, the productions values lend itself more to the smooth sounds emitting from funk and RnB’s use of the classic analogue machines, but really ‘Ridmik’ is wildly out there on it’s own, with Vibert’s freestyle imagination very much taking centre stage with the music.

2013’s ‘Luke Vibert’s Nuggets 3’ compilation album that gathered archive gems from the Bruton Music Library is clearly an influence on ‘Ridmik’ and the synth heavy and exotic productions that make up this long player, making this one a right enjoyable romp through Vibert’s imaginative style.

A true king of timbres, John Roberts continues making the earthliest electronic music, to which "Orah" is no exception. The title track from Roberts' forthcoming EP illustrates his comprehensive style of building percussive samples into unique, beautifully harmonious music – with subtle tastes of the Orient in this particular example. A mesmerising follow-up to the three diverse tracks of last year's Ausio EP, and one of our favourite albums from 2013, Fences. John Roberts has still got it, and in abundance at that!

Here you go. This is a track that came out on Connaisseur Superieur in August. I made it earlier this year and it's probably one of my most ambitious tracks but also the one which took longest to finish. But that's mainly down to me being a COMPLETE dumbass, as Alex and Martin from Connaisseur can confirm. Anyways, have a listen and any comments good or constructively bad are welcome. Big shout out also to Max for the fantastic artwork which perfectly captured the vibe of the track (and title).
