Just For The Night #28 - Prop Joe

First (hopefully of many!) "Jazz (We've Got)" radio show.

I've been wanting to do a show inspired by this idea for the longest while, just mining and digging back through jazz (+more) and hip hop with the art of sampling being a bridging link.

Recognising a sample in a song always felt like such a wonderful easter egg, and I've always found it fascinating how a song can be universally adored, with a small portion of it being loved so much that it would form the DNA of a new piece of music (for me to fall in love with too). The idea that there's this thread connecting artists and music transcending generations, backgrounds and genres is so utterly romantic to me.

Every episode will highlight (mainly) a jazz musician whose music I love, and I'll explore their sound and catalogue through hip hop productions that sampled their sound and recontextualized it to a new generation.

I'm hoping to develop this into a show where I can invite musicians and producers to chat more about the process of sampling as well as their fav samples/approaches to production. I'd also love to get this idea to a point where at the end of every show I can share an obscure jazz or funk track by an artist, and put an open call for producers to share their reworks/reimagining of the song to feature in the next episode. Would be cool for this to be a proper musical exchange!

But! That's for the future. For now I just want to share this 1st episode: an ode to one of my fav trumpet players, the legendary Freddie Hubbard. We'll hear some of his iconic pieces (specifically 'Red Clay') that spread through such a luminary career, retold through the music of A Tribe Called Quest, Charlotte Dos Santos, Gagle, Jack Wilkins, & Raekwon.

What is Locomotion? 
Locomotion is about DJ artistry, the creative process & storytelling with music. Every month, I invite someone for an all night b2b DJ set and we go on a journey of spiritual grooves & futuristic rides, making you move like crazy. 🤪

The long set time allows us to play long tracks, not shying away from those 8-12min tracks, moving through emotions & genres like there are no boundaries🚂

For the next edition on November 9, I invited Ajuma (Eva). Even though we know each other for quite some time now (through De Disco Gemeenschap) - and even recorded a hot records at one point during COVID - we haven 't shared the decks yet. So this b2b is long overdue and will undoubtedly be spicy AF🌶️
