Representing the city of Geneva here is Second Circle affiliate Androo (androo-3) with his "m'enfin?!" mix in the MFM series. Interview (excerpt) down below.

MFM: Hi Androo, thanks for contributing. For the readers who haven't been to Geneva before, could you describe the city a bit in terms of culture?

A: Mmmh, there are many things to say about the city. I feel that my generation came just after a certain “golden age” of the “underground” music culture. Geneva had a lot of squats during the 90s and early 2000s but now the political situation isn’t the same. Today we don’t have many non-normative venues allowing experimentally and who aren’t based on economic profit. For me, there is a certain vision missing from various clubs in the city. It feels sad that filling the room seems more important than exploring and defend other ones. I feel the potential of night culture and dance which is based on the collective energy of a certain youth is channeled into a kind of apolitical and dull consumption. I wish one day, the night may serve to create more spaces for political and experimental moments! But there is something amazing going on in Geneva, it’s the sound system scene. 

MFM: Your music as Androo sounds quite melodic and touches many different styles in an oddball kind of way. Where does all that come from? 

A: I was playing the piano when I was a child but I wasn’t working really hard (what’s work when you play?), I always preferred composing little things. There was also music in church. Later, I’ve had some reggae bands. I have always been a bit romantic with music. But the real explosion was the discovery of the sound systems culture. Every two months there was the Dubquake organised by OBF in Geneva (it’s still going strong!). Their style was informed by new wave melodies and futuristic dub sound, their sound and musical explorations created something really physical, experience! Around the same time I discovered what the music studio can be. You mix a new song and the same night you play it out, without a fuss, dubplate style. Later I opened up to other stuff and soon tried to bring together irreconcilable things. For more than a year now, I dived deep into jazz piano and contemporary music. Every day I do exercises, scales, etc, some of them become musical compositions. 

MFM: Could you take us on a tour through your studio? What's the vibe like, what's in there?

A: There is a mixing console with external effects, everything is done live. This is how I learnt it from the dub. I don’t do much arrangement on the computer, the track is being built at the console: you remove the bass now and then put a delay on the piano, everything is recorded in one take. It’s about the hands. There are some mistakes and you let them be, that is what makes music alive. There are some synths and drum machines, boxes of matches, wood pieces. I am just trying things out, it’s kind of a space for experimentation. It’s about researching, letting problems appear, chance is also important. Not everything is smoothen out, it’s about acceptation. You throw stuff on the floor, you accept them and then start from there.

MFM: Are you keeping it strictly to writing and recording music?

A: For now I don’t do electronic live acts. But I do piano lives. I keep them raw and experimental, so in a way it’s also influenced by the dub. I have been DJing since quite some time now. I approach mixing a bit like editing in cinema, I try to do cuts, rapprochements and loose associations. DJing is also somehow about friendship, the fact of doing, of organising parties together. Djing is great but feels a bit repetitive most of the time so I try to propose other things with DJ May and other. We are both drawn to cinema and theatre. So we started to read texts in the middle of a set, adding small dance pieces or even mixing silence. For us it’s about proposing simple and non extraordinary little experiences.
