“Industrial Princess”, Manuka Honey’s debut EP embodies her striking but mystic persona. Torn between nostalgia and uninhibited futurism, Industrial Princess is laced with nods to abandoned rave sound, recontextualised by Manuka Honey’s signature Latin rhythms and disregard for any genre-defining conventions. Underpinning the EP is an ominous feeling of distress and discomfort that Manuka Honey is renowned for, designed to provoke clubs into anxious frenzies and heightened bodily reactions.

Two years after our last release, the repression, bans and closures related to the health crisis have become unbearable. Following surreal government injunctions such as the ban on group dancing, we felt the need to bring artists together to compile a compilation for a return to our essence, the fundamental importance of being together and saturation of the senses are palpable.

This feeling of renewal is similar to the arrival of spring after winter, or a cry of joy to celebrate the sensory experience of a club and remember that our bodies need to dance and release to find balance and harmony with the world.

The compilation will open a dialogue on human trance rituals.

We propose to 12 artists to be part of an adventure that brings to light a new era of club culture. Let's open a new chapter together, where all kinds of musical eccentricities are allowed, where we free ourselves from the rules of the world before.

Another fierce release from the chief purveyors of mutant dembow, this time courtesy of Ecuadorian collaborators, PVSSY and Entrañas.
 
Something crept up her legs, enveloped her torso and prickled her neck right to her fingertips. A sensation she wasn't familiar with, one that caught her by surprise - mostly at the fact that she enjoyed it. She knew she was flushed but she didn't feel embarrassed. In fact, quite the opposite. She felt an urge she'd never felt, to take off her clothes and do nothing but stand, absorbing the energy that radiated from the open mouths of those whose eyes met the image of her body. Was this what it meant to feel empowered? 

Taken from 4-track 'Fervor' EP, 'Manía' sticks closely with the industrial, hard-hitting mutated-dembow sound now synonymous with the Colombian imprint, TraTraTrax. With previous releases from the likes of Nicola Cruz, Nick León and Luca Durán whose fiercely forward-facing and idiosyncratic takes on perreo have been reimagined as amapiano by Ikonika, a leftfield roller by Simo Cell and fierce breaks by Henzo, 'Fervor' maintains the principle of global collaboration with remixes from South African Hakuna Kulala associate, Menzi, and Uruguayan NAAFI affiliate, Lechuga Zafiro.

Next up on the catalogue comes a contribution from long-time collaborators both hailing from Ecuador, PVSSY and Entrañas. Off to a militant start - quite literally - razor-sharp whiplash effects jolt 'Manía' into action before mellowing somewhat with the introduction of bass throbs and epic-sounding melody. That's not to say that the track's force is dampened, though: their sharpness is integrated into a full-bodied soundscape amongst demonic vocal chops and the warning signs of long-drawn-out synth reverbs.

Across three EPs for Astral Plane Recordings, Chants has marked a development from relative novice to one of the club music world’s most distinctive voices. August 23 will see the release of Seven Spheres, the Madison-based artist’s first album since 2015 and his most accomplished work to date for the label.

Melding experience working in the New Orleans second line tradition with an acute passion for all forms of rhythmic acceleration, Chants suffuses Seven Spheres with both a coiled, premeditated energy and bursts of spontaneous joy. Largely recorded at home and with friends, the percussion heard throughout the album is imbued with a beguiling tension: improvisational in spirit, but also rigorously gridded out for DJ play.

Meticulously workshopped from the ground up, Seven Spheres grew out of a series of sound design-focused drum tracks that developed into full fledged anthems like “Filament” and “Muzzoline”. Further experiments in speed and sub bass juxtaposition begat “Seven Spheres” and “Assiah Dance”, the spiritual core of the record and two tracks that have been hammered in mixes and radio by us and others.

At eight songs, Seven Spheres is a tight bundle, built out of individual tracks that show a remarkable plasticity in relation to every other track on the album. Having experimented in texture, structure, and tempo, the album is stylistically broad, yet singular in approach: the result of a labor of love and a long-held desire to design dancefloor-functional music. Seven Spheres is out on all digital platforms on August 23.

Making his return to the Infinite Machine catalog is Nostro Hood System boss Galtier with his 3 track EP ‘Dancing On Ruins’; a relentless slug of driving percussion and discordant atmospheres. Taking quite a step from his 2018 ‘Terran’ EP released on IM, Galtier abandons the hopeful, up-lifting, sometimes euphoric mood that has characterized much of his sound for the last few years and flexes his ability to handle anxious, hard-hitting techno-influenced material – a healthy departure from the purposeful, existential theme evident in earlier works.

‘Dancing On Ruins’ is characterized by its dusty, weather-beaten sound palette, as if such music was created and played in a desolate, lifeless world to provide solitude for the stoic beings that reside there. It is fast and aggressive, utilising techno-esque sonics as its base, yet it avoids being scary or oppressive or too stereotypical in nature.

Scuffed Souls’ leads into the chaos with the pounding force of its 909 kick that thumps over the ever-evolving, fundamentally gothic sequence of melody. It is menacing and daunting to say the least, and gets straight to the point. Rhythmically it is reminiscent of classic rave-inclined techno but draws for quick transitions evident in contemporary club music. Crisp, pointed hi hats play gracefully amongst the angry soundscape and are quickly scared off by the growling Moog bassline that rumbles in to occupy the decrescendo.

The rhythm is broken and far more syncopated on ‘Precious Quartz (To Reave), which likewise increases in BPM from 140 to 148. Being the most stripped back, percussively oriented track on the whole release, Galtier flexes his capacity to execute myriad shifts in rhythm and pace as the majority of the track chugs along, the vessel made up of a its short but monstrous kick, sharp hi hat slashes, restrained 909 rides and a mutated bell call – warning others of its approach.

Finally the namesake of the EP, ‘Dancing On Ruins’, takes place, leaving the zenith of the release’s unnerving energy for last. Galtier combines elements of UK Techno rhythm with loose UK Funky instrumentation and meshes the two and speeds things up significantly. Though the rhythm returns to a more pulsing, simply structured state, the hollow lead is pulverising and raw throughout the whole track. This, accompanied by the blistering 150 BPM tempo, makes it a vicious, restless beast.

Monstart was born 14 years ago, out of love and celebration. The fruit of the meeting of Ouanounou (DJ) and Chatte Chatoyante (dancer-performer). 

With its pack of artists coming from all over the world, the label has been exploring club music and culture. Not caring about adhering to one specific genre, they draw from all of their combined influences to create a hybrid project.

With one idea in mind : to be together while celebrating the richness of human singularities.

Since 2009, 70 events mixing music and performances, 19 releases on the label (EPs and compilations) and a 5 years residency on Rinse France have allowed them to express their own vision of club music. After 5 years of Rinse’s residency,  Monstart is experiencing a new chapter with their homies of Piñata Radio by starting a musical journey, becoming their new monthly hosts. 

“For us dance and music are inseparable. We approach them in a personal, visceral and inclusive way. We don’t care about fitting in.”

Since 2019, the label has opened its publishing and sync branch named 'AudioScore', producing music for worldwide advertising campaigns.
