M-zine returns to Sofa Sound Bristol with a very special project - his debut album, 'Know When You're Ready'.

It's a milestone moment for an artist whose output has matured, marinated and developed for over a decade to a natural pinaccle.

M-zine represents everything we love at Sofa Sound and the album is layered with warm textures and organic tones to form a rich body of work with great depth that rewards both your patience and your sound system.

With influences rooted in dub, techno, funk and soul, M-zine embraces the lost art of simplicity and is focused on getting the most out of just 4 or 5 core elements so everything works together nicely in the mix.

Written mostly during covid; clubs were closed, but M-zine had his rig at home and used the isolation to craft his own little soundscape; something pure and introspective, nice and simple.

Its subtle, meditative and Sofa Sound through and through - a warm collection of tracks for you to appreciate.

"Don’t let their relatively tiny size fool you. Despite being one of the smallest birds of prey, kestrels are deadly airborne assassins. They have unbelievably good eyesight and can spot a beetle from 50 metres away, and even see ultraviolet light trails left by rodent pee which are invisible to us. Kestrels are dependent on populations of mice and voles and need to eat several a day to survive. As humans expand farmland, voles are driven out of their usual homes which has a knock-on effect for kestrels. Currently the number one cause of kestrel deaths is starvation. Keeping the food chain balanced is vital for keeping cool characters like kestrels in our skies."

‘Man Down’ has elements of deep techno flavours during the intro, interwoven with dancehall style vocals whilst the rolling bass ties this all together into a real head-nodder.
‘On The Reg’ is slightly more minimal and Jungle inspired, but still feels fresh with dark Jump Up style bass sounds gluing the whole track together.

New Zealand's talented Midnight Dubs makes his Codename: RCRDS debut with 'Generations EP'. This jazz, funk and hip hop inflected release opens with 'Improvise Wisely' where catchy vocal samples entwine with rolling breaks, brass and keys to stylishly open the release. 'Generations' moves in a deeper jazzier direction with steppier breaks and rolling bass evoking classic era atmospheric sounds. '

Love Divine' breaks delicate female vocals into the mix before it's sublime intro gives way to delicately edited drumwork, before 'Cloudbreak' works things further along it's jazzy path before we move onto closing track 'One More Forward' which rolls out into a an altogether darker bleep influence drumfunk rollout - perfect for the heads down dancefloors.

An excellent full debut release from an artist to watch.
