"Lee Valley Walking Trail: An Exploration of the Sound of Birds in the Urban Natural Environment and a Human (re)Connection to Their Voices."
My Intention; to deepen awareness of the sound of birds, led to deeper listening of the whole soundscape and relationships between anthrophony, biophony and geophony. The sounds of birds are inseparable from their environment: the space is the sound.
The work is concerned with documenting an exploration of a human relationship to natural sound in an urban setting rather than seeking to capture a recording of bird sounds ‘unspoilt’ by anthrophony.
The piece is centred around an 2nd order (8 channel) ambisonic field recording captured on the Lee Valley Walking Trail on 23/11/23 at 7.15am. The recording is augmented with processed and synthesised sounds. I aimed to work with sensitivity to the internal dynamics and timbres of the original recording; to mirror and complement its qualities and create subtle interventions that encourage deeper listening to the recorded soundscape. The augmentations are positioned in the 3D-sound field to mirror the movement and placement of sounds in the location, reflecting their spatial-temporal relationships.

Lee Valley Walking Trail - Binaural Render

-Created/mixed in Dolby Atmos. 

-Built from field recordings from the Olympic park Stratford; binaural recordings using the Senheiser Ambeo Smart Headset and shotgun recordings using a Senheiser MKH 8060 microphone. 

-An Avenue Lines with trees features an ambisonic recording, made with the Reynolds Atype8, of The Somerset House Choir, rendered to 7.1.4 and placed in the Atmos bed.

-Additional sound design created with Sound Particles 3D synth, Sky Dust.

The Snake Of Fountains - Binaural

Peripheries (2024): Was a site-specific, multichannel sound installation at Marshgate, UCL East, the work invited listeners to deepen their presence in the everyday environment through enlivening perceptions and enhancing awareness.

 Featuring a minimalist polyphonic choral composition drawing influence from venetian choral music, cori spezzati, (broken choruses) voices called across the vast atrium space, with solo voices serving as coordinates to define the reverberant open space. 

Interwoven within the composition were field recordings taken from the building itself. Lysergic and eerie, these processed recordings played with psychoacoustic perception and liminal listening perspectives, enlivening listeners to the sound and space around them. 

A unique array of 16 speakers arranged across 6 floors of the building, transformed the architectural space into a resonating body, encouraging an embodied exploration of the space to create a dynamic composition and evolving listening experience from multiple perspectives. 

Peripheries was originally created for 16 speakers installed at Marshgate UCL East. The 16-channels have been mixed as 3rd-order ambisonics and subsequently decoded to binaural for this edit. This is a live binaural recording of two collaborative pieces  of sonic architecture by Matt Spendlove and Amanda Butterworth, composed for 6.1 and performed at project Difvuse, London, May 2025.
Emergent algorithmic processes generate a 3D aural space of phasing minimalism. These works create temporary communities of pattern-makers, where the multichannel environment becomes a shared space for discovering emergent sonic relationships.

On the dub spectrum -  pt 1

A collection of music to help Cleo sleep which I made while I was pregnant with her. I recorded and composed with cellist Ellen Casey. 
The music tells a story of a day spent at the river, the sun rises, the sun sets, night comes and then sleep. 
The music gradually decomposes to aid the shift of consciousness from awake to sleeping. White noise samples, create soft rhythms echoing the heartbeat that she heard inside my womb, the rhythms shift and break down and eventually expire into fuzzy drones.
