Sound anthropologist Dr Tom Rice takes us on an immersive audio tour of an imaginary zoo, and asks us to think about it as a sound world. What happens if we make a conscious effort to listen to the zoo and its animals rather than just look at them? Can listening make us feel closer and more connected?

In an Anthropocene age of habitat destruction and biodiversity loss, an acoustic mindfulness of other lifeforms can help humans recalibrate their relationship to the natural world. It’s argued that looking at animals can produce a sense of detachment from them, and that having animals displayed for our viewing pleasure is an expression of a relationship in which humans are given power, and a sense of superiority. If that’s the case, can listening create a more sympathetic and empathetic orientation towards animals? 

Using animal sounds recorded at British zoos, in this podcast you’ll discover animals in an entirely new way, and think about our impact on them. What is the animals’ sound world like? What impact do our human sounds have on them? And we’ll do an experiment. One way to think about the decline in biodiversity is not just about diminishing numbers, you can also imagine a fade in the audible presence of animals. When a species dies out it also fall silent, so sound is a powerful way to draw attention to the value and fragility of biodiversity. Imagine a fade, taking decades, until finally there’s nothing, only silence. Would that be a loss do you think? 

Tom Rice is a lecturer in anthropology at the University of Exeter. His research specialism is in sound and in 2018 he started a project called Listening to the Zoo with a small group of colleagues. The team worked with Bristol and also Paignton Zoo in Southwest England, to try to think about the zoo as a sound environment, and find out whether attending to different kinds and qualities of sound could produce new perspectives on the zoos and their animals.

This podcast was produced as part of the Listening to the Zoo project, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, Transforming Social Science research call.

A Night in the Skull Discotheque by the beloved underground selector CCL is the latest offering in the T4T LUV NRG label’s highly limited DJ mix series of cassettes. This immersive journey through a wonderland of proto-dubstep sounds from the late 1970s through the year 2000 is a sonic sibling to CCL’s acclaimed 2018 mix Ode to Queer Steppas.

Inspired in part by Eris Drew’s use of “old records to create new styles out of fragments” on her Raving Disco Breaks Vol. 1 mixtape (T4T LUV NRG, 2019), CCL approached this recording with a parallel frame of mind. Created with 3 CDJs, one Turntable, and a Boss Digital Delay 200, the tracks included in the mix are deconstructed from their whole, and constituent parts are intertwined, sampled, and dubbed out while being further stretched beyond their physical limits. CCL mixed many tracks at the 'wrong speed', pitched beyond their original recognizable tone; others are recontextualized through imaginative layering.

With a solid nod to seminal mixtapes of the early 90s, CCL references the namesake for Side A, Bass Is Eternal, an unreleased 1992 mixtape by influential Bristolian producers Smith & Mighty, an important sonic fulcrum amongst the musical tributaries of the hardcore continuum that continues to reverberate to this day. CCL experienced the after-effects of this ‘proto’ sound genesis in 2008, while living in Bristol, by which point its emergent whispers had coalesced into what became known as dubstep. Tracing a rich history of reference through the samples, basslines, moods, and drum patterns emanating from Bass Is Eternal while looking for connections that predate it became a long-term fascination for CCL. The result is a DJ mix that connects the oft-forgotten dots between proto eras and modern developments in bass and dubstep.

For the resulting sonic ride on A Night in the Skull Discotheque, CCL leads us to a fantastical place of timeless surreality – a majestic haunted dancehall soundtracked by a giddy rush of steppers and dubbed-out delights. Subs rattle through syncopated percs, and moody synths glisten in macabre glory. Fantastical dancers wriggle in wispy eternity, liberated from their corporeal forms in all their greatest spiritual wonder. Both extravagant and dusky, A Night in the Skull Discotheque is a world of seductive in-betweens, a place caught between the moodiest depths and the highest exuberance – A love letter to one of the most impactful formative sounds of the last decades.

Sound design master Joe has had a stream of exceptional music out over the past few years and recently joined the PD fam with his track "Drench" featuring on a recent PDCOMP. We had chance to catch up and chat about his weird and wonderful world of sound, his early introductions to electronic music and how he approaches his studio time. In the mix, he showcases some of his own productions plus a whole bunch of swampy, tubby, deep and wonky selections. Yushh at the buttons for the first hour.

This is a live binaural recording of two collaborative pieces  of sonic architecture by Matt Spendlove and Amanda Butterworth, composed for 6.1 and performed at project Difvuse, London, May 2025.
Emergent algorithmic processes generate a 3D aural space of phasing minimalism. These works create temporary communities of pattern-makers, where the multichannel environment becomes a shared space for discovering emergent sonic relationships.

Pattern Making - Live Binaural Recording at Project Divfuse London

Be transported (back) to Worthy Farm and deep inside the Glastonbury Festival experience. 

In 2014, award-winning sound designer Gareth Fry, set out to capture the life of the Festival through sound. This binaural soundscape presents 24 hours at Glastonbury, conveying the rich and layered festival experience, from putting up your tent to after hour revellers. Best listened to with headphones.

Glastonbury Festival is the largest greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world. In 2014, the V&A acquired guardianship of the Glastonbury Festival Archive, an eclectic and growing resource that reveals how the Festival has developed over the past 50 years to become the global cultural phenomenon it is today.
