CoOp Presents proceed to give you what you need! Following on from the 'Plug One' series, a whole slew of releases are scheduled for the second half of the year, as we enter the next phase of the CoOp Presents universe. First up, the Selectors Assemble crew with a mammoth remix project reinterpreting tracks from LCSM's subliminal album 'Earthbound'. Originally released last year on Dutch label, Super Sonic Jazz, 'Earthbound' was a highly-acclaimed project from a band headed by CoOp Presents label-boss IG Culture, featuring a heavyweight band comprised of some of London's most talented players, including members of Steam Down, Wonky Logic, Nathaniel Cross and IG's label partner, Alex Phountzi, amongst others. LCSM (aka Likwid Continual Space Motion) is an exploration into afro-futurism, inspired by the likes of Sun Ra, but forming a sound entirely unique with a hybrid of bruk, boogie, funk and jazz. The album received rave reviews from the likes of Gilles Peterson, XLR8R and Beat Caffeine, with the vinyl quickly selling out globally, and featuring highly in numerous end of year lists, from Sound Shelter (Sydney), to Bandcamp to The Vinyl Factory, as well as a nomination for "Track of the Year" at the Worldwide Awards and named "Album of the Year" by Rush Hour! So to this new EP released on IG Culture & Alex Phountzi's own imprint. As you'd expect, the Selectors Assemble gang deliver the goods; firing on all cylinders across this 6-track bruk opus. Cengiz kicks off the session with his flip on 'Frequency' ahead of James Rudie's stark sub-heavy version of 'The Box'. There are two mixes of 'More Brilliant Centre', the first from Entek, the second from CoOp Presents co-founder Alex Phountzi. The hyper-tempo'ed 'World Order Is Chaos' sees IG & Alex team up again under their NameBrandSound moniker, and we close out with Xtra Brux's take on 'Let Me' (which originally featured Natalie May & Neue Grafik); keeping it soulful and jazzy but adding drums that knock, as they do throughout the EP, staying true to the cosmic-jazz source material, but re-shaping it exceptionally for the bruk dancefloors. An amazing record recently landed in my post office box, an absolute classic of an album I honestly never thought I’d see in person let alone get a copy of: Winston Mankunku Ngozi’s quartet masterpiece “Yakhal Inkomo” - I insist everyone at least take a listen to this on Spotify or elsewhere. On this episode I've included the title track to start off the set. Pullin from the Stacks - Episode 179

Another instant hit from Australia's fervent scene, Rushing sees Freemantle based MC, Cruz Patterson delivering hallucinatory rhymes over an uptempo bruk leaning beat.

Named after the famous flightless Tasmanian Nativehen, which can run up to 40kmph, TURBO CHOOK exposes a new side of McConnell’s musicianship (following his success as half of the house and soul duo Close Counters, who gained support from tastemakers Indie Shuffle, Clash Mag, XLR8R, NME, Mixmag, Pilerats, EARMILK, Stoney Roads, Gilles Peterson, to name a few). Similarly, Cruz holds a string of successful solo singles in his repertoire, such as the song ‘Venice’, produced by Tame Impala, and other collaborations including ShockOne and SuperEgo. Notably known as the frontman of the acclaimed group Koi Child, Cruz toured Australia prolifically with Tame Impala & Fat Freddy’s Drop,playing at festivals, international tours, and receiving a nomination for an ARIA Award for ‘Best Urban Album’, as well as acclaim from Beats 1, Triple J, BBC Radio 1 & more.

Described by Patterson as “a hip hop track that ever so slightly nudges the boundaries of the genre with its fast paced tempo and out of the ordinary story telling”, ‘Rushing’ recalls the night of the ARIA Music Awards, when Cruz’s drink was spiked. When TURBO CHOOK sent him the instrumentals, he felt they perfectly depicted the feeling of being unknowingly drugged: “I was rushing, kinda trippy, like time was spinning in circles around me”. Despite being characterised by a consistent and pressing groove, the track is painted with liquid tones which depict an enticing identity for the song. With Cruz’s storytelling and TURBO CHOOK’s skillful musical craftsmanship, the audience is encouraged to hear something new and refreshing with every listen.

"Rushing" will see full release on Friday February 18.

Within Without, the expansive string laden centre of Scrimshire's 2021 album Nothing Feels Like Everything, receives a beautiful rework from long-time friend and collaborator Emanative. 

Scrimshire and Emanative appeared in the London Jazz scene around the same time in 2008 and in fact in 2010 Scrimshire remixed song Illusions, from Nick Woodmansey's debut record. Now the prolific producer and writer returns the favour with a meditative and uplifting take.

The bonds on this rework are many and deep as both artists have worked extensively with Jessica Lauren over the years. In this remix, Nick brings more of his own collaborators along for the ride, with additional saxophone and vocals lifting this peaceful "optimistical" version.

Laraaji is a musician, mystic and laughter meditation practitioner based in New York City. He began playing music on the streets in the 1970s, improvising trance-inducing jams on a modified autoharp processed through various electronic effects. Brian Eno saw him playing one night in Washington Square Park and invited him to record an album for his seminal Ambient series (Ambient 3: Day Of Radiance, released 1980). Laraaji went on to release a prolific series of albums for a wide variety of labels, many of which he recorded himself at home and sold as cassettes during his street performances.

Ras G (Brainfeeder/Ninja Tune) explores space and time through his ancient/futuristic music. Dusty, ethereal and bugged out, the Crate Creator's beats bring the past to the future.

In March long time friend of the label, Neue Grafik, stepped forth with his most fully realised offering to date. 'Innervision' had been a long time coming, born out of a encounter in Paris back in 2016. The EP begins with the lysergic ebbs and flows of ‘Innervision’, in which Wayne Snow graces the record with a sublime vocal performance.

The record takes cues from the broken-beat sound of London while paying homage to the Parisian house dance scene. Largely sample based, but also employing much more live instrumentation than ever before, Neue Grafik’s music is informed by movement and in turn offers so much for Dancers to respond to.

The desire to discover and delve into new and unexplored areas of music has turned attention on the Japanese jazz scene of the 1970s, often regarded as its gilded age. The recent ground-breaking sell-out BBE compilation J Jazz: Deep Modern Jazz from Japan 1969-1984 threw much needed light on this fascinating era and presented a range of artists and music that surprised and delighted all who heard it. A key track on the compilation was one of the rarest and least known: Dead Letter by the Tohru Aizawa Quartet, taken from ‘Tachibana’, an album so elusive that some pondered whether it even existed.

The album, Tachibana, was recorded in 1975 and, until included on the J Jazz compilation, was unknown except to a small group of obsessive Japanese jazz collectors.  The privately pressed record was the only album made by the Quartet, four amateur musicians who were university students at the time. The session was financed by a local businessman, Ikujiroh Tachibana, who pressed up a few hundred copies to use as a business card. In the intervening 40 odd years since its recording, few copies have surfaced, making it an in-demand yet elusive artefact from the golden age of Japanese jazz. BBE Records are honoured to present a fully authorised reissue of this holy grail, licensed directly from the band themselves.

Tachibana has all the necessary components of a cult album: pressed in small numbers, a few mysterious and vague details about its origins, languishing in obscurity for decades and, above all, superb musical craftsmanship and skill. It can now be enjoyed by a new audience around the world.
The album opens with the dynamic percussion work-out Philosopher’s Stone written by the then law-student and drummer Tetsuya Morimura. It propels along with the band at full pelt, showcasing Morimura’s well-developed drumming style. For a teenage amateur player to compose and perform such an accomplished and impressive piece is a testament to the talent that the band contained. Philosopher’s Stone is followed by Sacrament, an epic modal composition by saxophonist Kyoichiro Morimura that fans of Wayne Shorter, Pharoah Sanders and late-era John Coltrane will appreciate. After an extended intro the band drop into a heavy, churning groove, Morimura’s saxophone scorching above the volcanic rhythm section.
Dead Letter, written by Aizawa himself, is an epic piano led symphony of spiritual jazz. Think McCoy Tyner at his imperial finest and you’ll get a flavour: impact, emotion and power all suffuse to create a overwhelming experience. Amazingly, this is still the only Aizawa composition yet to be recorded.
The Tachibana album also includes two cover versions, both Latin flavoured numbers delivered with élan and brio: La Fiesta by Chick Corea and the classic Samba de Orfeu by Luiz Bonfá.

So, just five tracks in total, the sole existing evidence of an astonishing band, the Tohru Aizawa Quartet.

The long-awaited reissue of this mythic album will include new liner notes and photos, plus fully translated notes from the original Japanese text. The album will be presented in an authentic thick card gatefold sleeve in a faithful reproduction of the original sleeve design.
