Cloud Studies formed in 2024, as means for Adam Cresswell and Martin J Langthorne to explore the sonic possibilities offered by the large arsenal of effects pedals they had acquired.

‘Cloud Cartography’ was the first song written by Adam for the band as a means to set the tone for the direction of their sonic explorations. It was inspired by visits to the Derryveagh Mountains of Donegal in Ireland, and fighting off the elements as sheets of rain beat down upon the mountainous landscape.

The song is about trying to make sense of a constantly changing world and our efforts to document and understand it.  In a library, the protagonist meets someone attempting to map and catalogue the clouds. They find themselves standing together on a mountainside battling the elements, their undaunted optimism constantly challenged by the impossible nature of their undertaking. 

Sonically the song presents a panoramic, full-spectrum wall of sound; dreamy synths, layers of reverb-drenched guitars from Adrian Taylor and Martin J Langthorne, ethereal vocals from Adam Cresswell, underpinned by a tight insistent rhythm from drummer Nat Guest.

With buckets of melancholic charm and an unerring ear for a great tune, Autocamper are the perfect pop tonic to our Age of Anxiety. “What Do You Do All Day?” is their debut album and their wide-eyed reflections on unrequited romances, bedroom tiffs and hungover misdemeanors effortlessly retrofit the jangle pop sounds of the '80s without any trace of C86 revisionism.

Boisterous, lovable songs like “Again,” “Foxes” and "Proper" hearken back to the DIY roots of the early Flying Nun and Postcard label bands, groups who were as inspired by punk and post-punk as by 60s jangle and 70s AM radio pop. Fresh and utterly timeless -- not twee, not anorak, not lucky, just pop. It’s these truths that distinguish them from their peers, the hollow strains of Instagram Indie and the corporate pop that forces us to be joyful.

Moonpools are a five-piece band from Basel, formed in 2016 by Marcie Nyffeler (vocals/ guitar), Jasper Nyffeler (drums), and Francesco Vona (keyboard) and completed in 2017 by Matthias Gusset (guitar) and David Blum (bass). The latter are known from various Basel-based projects such as She Loves You, Don't Kill The Beast, and Mastergrief.

Their second EP 'Damaged Goods' was released in August 2022 via Young and Aspiring. All songs received international airplay (e.g. BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio UK & USA, byteFM) and were included in various Spotify and Apple Music playlists (e.g. Fresh Finds Indie, Indie Brandneu, New Music Friday Switzerland, ALT CTRL). Since the release, the band has played several concerts, including performances at Montreux Jazz Festival, Winterthurer Musikfestwochen, Locarno Film Festival as well as support shows for Mild Orange, The Grogans and Pile. Out of over 1,000 songs submitted, Moonpools won over the jury of the m4music Festival Demotape Clinic in 2023 with their song 'Damaged Goods' and thus won the award in the Rock category.

Their third EP 'Hide and Seek' will be released on 19 April 2024, all of which, apart from the drums, the band recorded independently in their rehearsal room. In contrast to their previous releases, the songwriting process was much more collaborative: The majority of the songs were written by guitarist Matthias Gusset. Inspired by bands such as My Bloody Valentine, Ruby Haunt or Ride, the songs, whose melodies and lyrics were written by singer Marcie Nyffeler, move between Indie Rock and Shoegaze. Countless distorted guitars lay the bedrock on which ecstatic synth melodies, rousing basslines and heavy drums meet.

The concise arrangements, however, only form the backdrop for the catchy and touching vocals that form the heart of the band. Marcie Nyffeler, whose lyrics are often a balancing act between melodrama and kitsch, sings about forgiveness, feelings of guilt, self-doubt and self-discovery. This honest and at times self-deprecating view, together with the tumultuous music, unfurls a charm that makes Moonpools' music so irresistible and brings a smile to your lips while you are still wiping a small tear from your eye.
