The people of Hamburg are associated with traits such as modesty and coolness. The same can be said about the music scene of Germany‘s second largest city: While there is a lot of buzz in the media about cre- atives being envious to the capital, the music scene, especially in the electronic fields, has been thriving here in the last few years. Hafendisko, the Hamburg based new sub label by hfn music, reknowned for their re- leases by Trentemøller and Kasper Bjørke, now puts an end to Hanseatic understatement: “hamburg elektronisch” is a new compilation series of awesome electronic beats from the river Elbe, the first installment focu- ses solely on House music. The 20 tracks of this download-only com- pilation, among which are three exclusives, not only feature old masters like DJ Koze and Lawrence, promising newcomers like Smallpeople und Wareika, but also showcase the most important melting pots of the Hamburg scene.
The new drive of the city is mostly accumulated in two spots: Smallville Records, the first of them, proves that the classic record store still can be of relevance, no matter how much discourse about releases and pro- ducers is now going on in digital networks. The store is small, but run with knowledge and passion. The people there not only curate their own Smallville parties all around the city, but also run an offspring store in Paris and several great labels: “Smallville” (featured here with tracks by Law- rence and Smallpeople), the vinyl-only imprint „Laid“ and, of course, „Dial Records“,the most-famous electronic label in Hamburg, because of its unique melancholic approach to techno music (check out Isolée on this compilation). On top of that, people who help there at the counter also run their labels like RvdS (whose “it’s”-platform is represented here with „A Walk On The Moon“) or book great parties like the “Dear” nights at the “Ego” club - the second epicentre in Hamburg at the moment.
With the “Ego” in the outskirts of the world famous Reeperbahn the city finally has a great techno club again, in addition to the „Baalsaal“ and „Neidklub“. Its owner Solomun also runs the booking agency and label “Diynamic” in the same building. The label already released nearly 50 records in quite a short time and thus is featured heavily here. Apart from Solomun check out Stimming, DJ Phono and H.O.S.H. The latter is also responsible for the ever-growing “Grünanlagen” Open Air parties who usually have an awesome line-up, although they are free.
Apart from other important concert venues like the „Uebel &amp; Gefähr- lich“ and all the nice bars of St. Pauli between the Reeperbahn and the Schanze quarter, at the end of the night the Hamburg scene still meets at the Golden Pudel Club at the harbour. Despite some difficulties it is still going strong and uncommercial after more then twenty years. Not only most of the artists mentioned before run parties here, but lots of the other labels in this collection as well like Liebe*Detail (Wareika, Lo- vebirds), Dérive (Christopher Rau) or Mirau (Tensnake). At the Pudel so many different people and music scenes engage in creative friction. This multitude of styles will be covered in future parts of this “Hamburg elektronisch” series that will also be released on CD. Cause hanseatic understatement is over.

Heaven Only Knows

The body never lies.
Every dance is a graph of the heart.
Nothing is more revealing than movement.

These are the words of Martha Graham, one of the greatest American dancers and choreographers of the 20th century. Massimiliano Pagliara might as well have them tattooed on his chest, close to his heart, being an accomplished dancer, too. He has studied contemporary dance in Milan and Berlin, and went on to dedicate his life to transforming experience into movement, be it musical, physical, or spiritual. Massimilano's message is clear: Don't stand still. Don't keep looking back. Know where you are coming from, but don't remain petrified by the past. Take a chance at Endless Change, instead. Move on! Just like Massimilano did.

Stemming from Lecce province, an area at the south-eastern-most tip of Italy, Massimilano has been based in Berlin for several years where he's been one of the main forces behind recombining the city's hardboiled techno scene with an often overlooked sensibility for the soft and the tender. Call it underground disco passion. Massimilano's last and sophomore album, With One Another, released in 2014, was about celebrating the joy of human encounters and in parts seemed like a big get-together with like-minded artists and friends (among them nd_baumecker, Lee Douglas, and Credit 00). The record quickly hit the number one spot in Groove magazine's album chart – and its creator hit the road.

Besides his busy DJ schedule and far from the usual club circuit routines, Massimilano dedicated himself to intense travelling and exploring the world anew. “I felt like I have lived more than ever,” he states. “Getting to discover all these beautiful places around the world and meeting so many lovely interesting people, has inspired me in many different ways. I feel enriched.”

The result of these experiences is Feel Live, Massimiliano's third full-length endeavour. It was recorded in several intimate, sometimes improvised studio settings between Los Angeles, Portland, and Massimiliano's homebase in Berlin as well as at airports and on intercontinental flights high up in the sky. Featuring vocals by Private Agenda, Peaking Lights, Kim Anh and instrumental contributions by Fort Romeau, Tim K, and Jules Etienne, Feel Live is Massimilano's most playful and imaginative work to date. It's as emotional as sensual, as vibrant as the first ray of light after a thunderstorm has cleared the air.

Is it awkward or odd to call this record jazzy? Presumptuous to pinpoint its spacial, almost orchestral qualities? Unfair on the ruling Cosmic powers to highlight its aspirations of founding a new land of Balearic Harmonia and getting down at a huge fertility rite with electro enthusiasts and house lovers? Not one bit. Feel Live is pure grandeur and elegance. It feels like an eternal movement.

Martha Graham has dedicated her whole life to dancing. “It's permitting life to use you in a very intense way,” she said. “Sometimes it is not pleasant. Sometimes it is fearful. But nevertheless it is inevitable.” Massimilano couldn't agree more. His advice when facing the inevitable: “Live what you are feeling, feel what you are experiencing, good or bad, it is an experience.” 

"Feel Live" will be released on Live At Robert Johnson Friday, 30th November.

New York City Born and New Jersey City based Chico Mann (aka Marcos Garcia), a multi instrumentalist and guitarist with the afrobeat orchestra Antibalas  is to release his solo ‘Manifest Tone EP’ through Soundway Records on 12th November. 

The EP represents four of the choicest cuts from Chico Mann’s ‘Manifest Tone’ Volumes 2&3 that until now were only available digitally. It signals the end of one phase and the start of a new chapter in Chico Mann’s career with a brand new album signed to Soundway Records for release in early 2013. 

The Manifest Tone journey began in 2004. During breaks from touring with Antibalas Marcos began crafting a more personal sound in his basement studio. A hybrid beast of culture and tone where Fela Kuti and Willie Colon meet Stevie B, Lisa Lisa, Afrika Bambaata and Kraftwerk, it lives in a landscape shaped by Africa, Cuba, New York and Miami.

These unique experimentations led to the release of ‘Manifest Tone Volume 1’ in 2006 and eventually morphed into Volumes 2 & 3 that were finished in 2008 and 2010 respectively. What sounds on paper like a meeting of styles past in reality emerges sounding incredibly fresh and original.

Over the three volumes Chico Mann’s own unique style has emerged and evolved (something he has dubbed 'Afro-Freestyle') and in 2010 he released the critically acclaimed 'Analogue Drift' album for Wax Poetics records. 

All of this paves the way for the arrival of his most accomplished and polished sound yet that will touch down in early 2013.

Chico Mann will also add to his list of remixes for the likes of Little Dragon and Hess is More by remixing Soundway's London based Ghanaian afro band Konkoma in December 2012.

Since Biesmans made his debut on AEON last year with his “A Long Road” EP, he has continued to build a profile and musical output that is both exciting and ground breaking. So it’s with great pleasure that we welcome him back to the label for his follow up EP “Top Gun”

Biesmans has decided to showcase two subtly different versions of the title track “Top Gun”. Version 1 is a stunningly produced lo-fi disco workout with nod to 80’s synth classics. A dynamic bass line underpins a delightfully simple but effective groove and delicious melodies. Version 2 is similar in it’s approach but is perhaps a little more strident. Biesmans said “I often make several versions of a track when I’m writing and then focus in on a particular version. In this case I couldn’t decide so I figured let’s release both!'
“Dr Electric” is a more melancholy in it’s approach, with a broken beat, subtle synths and vocodered vocals taking centre stage, with almost blissful prog rock leanings in places.

Remix duties are taken up by Permanent Vacation head honcho and AEON favorite Benjamin Fröhlich and Italian duo Phunkadelica.
Both have chosen to tackle “Dr Electric” and the results are sublime. Fröhlich’s approach stays closest to the original but employs a tougher breakbeat as the foundation for his version, borrowing heavily from the synth content before delivering a driving bass line to take the track into peak time territory. Phunkadelica’s more traditional progressive house style treatment serves up a more hypnotic mix with a galloping baseline and an ever evolving layered style that draws in the listener until a breakdown delivers the spin tingling moments.

Another perfectly balanced EP from the AEON crew with something to satisfy all palates.

For our second release of the year, we welcome Hamburg pairing, Cosmo & Kramer. Appearing on the first edition of our ‘Solid(e) State’ various artists series last year, they provided us with the impressive and wholesome arpeggio roller ‘Last Government’.
A track that stayed firmly in our hearts and minds ever since, we just had to bring the guys back for a solo EP, full of Cosmo & Kramer goodness. Taking shape on Solide014, Cosmo & Kramer land with their ‘Bingo Fun’ EP, comprising three tracks laced with exuberant nu-disco energy.
The shimmering, bongo-led title track ‘Bingo Fun’ ignites with a sure glow of high-tempo, dancefloor spirit; a delectable feast of punchy kicks and crisp snares. Digging deep on ‚Really?’, Cosmo & Kramer’s emotive synth work takes hold, soaring with cinematic effect, before closing out with ‘Bonus Romance’. A bubbling end to the story, ‘Bonus Romance’ sees the spell of C&K cast via glistening melody and the harmonising of lush percussive elements.

Finnish DJ and producer Yotto has become an Anjunadeep legend since making his debut on the label in 2015. Winning huge support from BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong, Annie Mac and Danny Howard, Otto Yliperttula quickly rose to prominence with his energetic melodic house sound. His debut album ‘Hyperfall’, released in late 2018 reached #1 on Billboard’s Dance Album Chart, and saw him tour the world and play at Coachella. Since then Yotto has established his own label, Odd One Out, putting out a string of club cuts supported by the likes of Tale Of Us, Artbat and Eric Prydz.

Over a year since his last solo release on Anjunadeep, Yotto now makes a welcome homecoming with ‘Another Riff For The Good Times / Daydreaming’. Demonstrating his flair with uplifting melodies, ‘ARFTGT’ is classic Yotto, whilst the restrained ‘Daydreaming’ is a highlight from the recent chart topping compilation ‘Anjunadeep 11’.
