Musician from Manchester. Interested in creating acoustic music; either for solo guitar or using repetition and layered instruments. 

Led by Composers Sam Eastmond and Nikki Franklin, The SPiKE Orchestra is a large-ensemble dedicated to their collaborative composition. Drawing on a wide range of influences including John Zorn, Duke Ellington, Frank Zappa and Carl Stalling, Eastmond and Franklin meld divergent genres from jazz, rock, klezmer, cartoon and the avant-garde into a cohesive whole.

After meeting on a rain swept bandstand in 2011 Eastmond and Franklin instantly found a shared musical connection and love of the absurd. Subsequent collaborations gave rise to the birth of The SPiKE Orchestra.

In March 2013 The SPiKE Orchestra recorded their debut album ‘a Proper GrownUp’

The SPiKE Orchestra’s current project is “Mister Punch – A Comic Tragedie” 
Based on the nineteenth century Cruickshank and Collier Punch & Judy script and a far cry from the gaudy excesses of children’s entertainment; The SPiKE Orchestra’s interpretation is a darkly comic and murderous trawl through the seedy underbelly of Victorian society.

Cafe OTO opened in April 2008 with the aim of providing a home for creative new music that exists outside of the mainstream. It comprises one large cafe/performance space open during the day serving food and drink with an evening programme of live music almost seven nights a week. 

OTOROKU is part of OTOProjects - a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) that has been set up to manage the programme at Café Oto. Any profits from OTOROKU are put back into supporting what we do and will help us to continue programming the best musicians and performers from all over the world.

The Comet Is Coming has possessed an air of inevitability almost from the word “Go”! Much like the trail-blazing name they originally lifted from a BBC Radio Workshop record, the trio has participated in a kind of Big Bang. Its immediately relentless sound demands a sense of being present in the moment yet lost within it, much like how visceral punk rock, interstellar jazz blasts, deepest dance-floor trances and real-time technological breakthroughs do. Octavia Butler once wrote that, “There is nothing newunder the sun, but there are new suns.” And on their third album, Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam, synthesist/studio-magician Danalogue, drummer-producer/intuitionist Betamax, and saxophonist/spiritual riffologist Shabaka bring her verses to life. They burn brightly, directly and confidently, soundtracking our epoch of change in ways their contemporaries simply aren’t trying to. Like great artists throughout the recorded century, they possess, in Shabaka’s words, “a sensitivity to the zeitgeist,” channeling their sound into both a mirror to our times and a potential healing process for it. If that seems like asking a lot, The Comet Is Coming is uniquely qualified. Because even by their own telling, that other-worldly power was almost instantaneous.
