The Field Between: Music and Anti-Music

This artistic manifesto explores sound in the liminal space between music and anti-music—a generative field where the "unheard" insists on being felt rather than understood.
Music as Architecture: Music is framed as humanity's system for creating order and meaning from sonic chaos. It organizes, names, and classifies sound, offering maps and directions through auditory experience. Music builds bridges of meaning, structures time into comprehensible sequences, and domesticates temporal flow so it "makes sense." Fundamentally, music expresses gratitude for the recognizable, providing belonging and comfort through shared patterns and familiar structures.

Anti-Music as Invitation: Contrary to negation or rupture, anti-music is a profound expansion of sonic possibility. It doesn't destroy—it invites. This is an invitation to perceive differently, to embrace the unmapped and un-coded as valid artistic territory. Anti-music offers "foreignness not as exile, but as adventure"—a chance to be a stranger in one's own sensory experience. It presents the sublime: beauty in what escapes comprehension, abysses that aren't empty but full of strange possibilities "without baptism." Where music domesticates time, anti-music offers time without domestication. It expresses gratitude for mystery itself.

The Fertile In-Between: The work's core focus is the vibrant field existing between these poles—not a void but a charged space of becoming where the "inaudito" (unheard) insists, overflows, conspires, and expands. This recognition acknowledges that understanding is also limitation; every definition closes secret doors. Each act of comprehension loses infinite other readings.
Intuitive Reconnection: The practice seeks to reconnect with pre-lingual perception—sensing vibrations the body intuits without understanding. "In this not-understanding, I reconnect." This return to the un-codified is the core artistic act.

Unified Philosophy: Music and anti-music aren't opposing forces but symbiotic partners coexisting in the same sonic space. The work celebrates both the understood and its beyond, residing in what anti-music reveals: a "fenda linda"—a beautiful fissure in the fabric of the known, from which new ways of hearing and being emerge.

This Ghostly International mix brings together tracks by label favourites old and new. With Ghostly mainstay Heathered Pearls (Jakub Alexander) blending material from artists such as Mary Lattimore, Galcher Lustwerk and Matthew Dear, this deft mix balances the propulsive rhythms of house, techno and electronic pop with more ethereal, weightless textures. At times such sounds are brought together on the same track - Alexander opens with Kllo’s ‘Maybe We Could’, a cut in which delicate synths and vocal loops are set against gently insistent drum programming - while other parts of the mix find runs of club tracks giving way to dreamstate ambiences. However they are combined, this eighty-minute set exemplifies the kind of warm electronic sounds which have made Ghostly such a beloved label down the years.

Bleep Mix #157 - Heathered Pearls

Purelink is the brainchild of Tommy (@raw_silk), Akeem (@millia-rage) and Ben (@kind_tree).  All talented producers in their own right, the three are based in Chicago and have been making tunes together that last year or so, featuring on recent comps from Naive, Lillerne Tapes and Chicago Research.

Throughout their Animix they showcase some of their own forthcoming productions amidst a magical downtempo exploration. I love the balance between foggy and  euphoric they've managed to create in this hour long trip.

Let's Play House with Jacques Renault @ The Lot Radio 01 - 01 - 2021

@khotin has served up a free flowing range of multi-genre experiments since announcing himself with a soft-hued acid album on 1080p back in 2014. Now involved with running Normals Welcome as well as releasing on DFA, Pacific Rhythm and Public Release, his music is united by a distinctive take on melody, post-club melancholy and love for downtempo sounds. He crafts blissful songs filled with nostalgic feelings and is exactly the sort of artist in whom we can all find some sort of solace.

And this mix is a perfect tonic for reluctant bodies with its slowly cascading rhythms and soft focus melodies serving as a gentle New Year wakener. It's laced with perfectly dreamy pads and ramshackle drums that are never too forceful but always compelling. While often invitingly sombre in mood, the clouds do break along the way to bring moments of real lightness and joy just when you need it.

Vol. 65 comes from Hi-Vis, founder of the excellent mix series Beyond / Below, one half of Farplane, and label operator at Dreamtone. Their mixes are something special, always thoughtful in movement and resonant in feeling. This one has a light buoyancy about it, as well as some very subtle sonic themes running throughout that remind me of the sound / smell of crisp air :)
