For the 52nd installment in our Just For The Night series, selectors take you on their own journey through groove. Anything goes.

This week brings us to London via France, with party host and label curator at Beauty & The Beat, Cédric Woo. You might find him playing Brazilian, Afro, zouk or gwoka just as much as revolutionary jazz, soul, dub, funk, deep house or obscure grooves and forgotten classics. The idea is to find the connections to create a unique cosmic bubble.

He started out in the mid 90s as a radio DJ & music coordinator at Radio Campus Clermont-Ferrand, with a love for post rock and all things Jamaican expanding to hip hop, funk and soul. At the turn of the century, he spent a year in New York City which would be transformative. His flatmate in Harlem (and soon to be mentor) introduced Cédric to the magical worlds of The Loft and Body & Soul, ushering in a new found love for spacey disco and cosmic music in general.

A close friendship with David Mancuso would follow, and once resettled in London in late 2000, he soon became part of the Lucky Cloud team which has been hosting the quarterly Journey Through the Light parties since 2003.

In 2005, alongside friends and fellow DJs/promoters Jeremy Gilbert and Belle Bete, BEAUTY AND THE BEAT was born, a party series & whole community built around it to this day. They would describe the sound as “organic psychedelic soul” (from Pharaoh Sanders to Patrick Adams, Talking Heads to Larry Heard, Ebo Taylor to ATCQ, Jorge Ben to Lee Perry) played on an audiophile sound-system (Klipschorn and Tannoy speakers, Sugden and Mark Levinson amplifiers, Isonoe mixer). 

It's now the longest running monthly audiophile party in London 🚀 Long may it continue!

Cedric's delivered a suitably eclectic, cosmic mix, a recording of his closing set at a Beauty & The Beat party in November 2023. We're super grateful he's shared this exclusively with us to live for all eternity on the series.

Had to swap out a needle in the beginning so a bit all over the place first half hour but thoroughly enjoyed playing a bit deeper on their Funktion One system💕

A DJ, producer, radio pioneer, and cultural curator, he’s known for fusing sound with experience.
