Summer Song

Devil's Pie is honored to present to you a tribute of jazz living legend Herbie Hancock by Mark de Clive-Lowe, one of today's contemporary musical masters. More than a regular DJ mix, this live recording features Mark looping, remixing, and adding his own musicianship to Herbie's iconic music.

In Mark de Clive-Lowe's own words:
"The first time I heard Herbie Hancock was the Miles live album My Funny Valentine/Four and More. It was the first time I'd heard that era jazz music and I remember being so blown away with the way Herbie and Tony Williams played together and interacted on that concert. That was the start of a deep admiration and love for the art, creativity and music of Herbie Hancock. I consumed everything I could that he turned his hand to - all of his work with Miles, his own solo records for Blue Note, sideman recordings with every jazz great in every decade since the 60s, his Mwandishi experimental crossover work, the Headhunters deep funk - there's nothing the man could not do. As a pianist he's the ultimate - harmonically so rich and inventive, melodically so lyrical, rhythmically so damn hip. I've been fortunate to see him play on numerous occasions all over the world. The first time was the VSOP band live in Japan along with Wayne Shorter, Wallace Roney, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. I was 17 at the time and can't really fully explain how amazing that was to me. He's one of my biggest inspirations and influences and through his huge body of work, a true musical mentor. In being asked to put together a tribute set, it was the perfect opportunity to go back through decades of his work and pick moments that I really love. I wanted to do more than just spin a set of tunes though, I wanted to take those moments and sample them, flip them, perform a live mixtape. It was the perfect way to share the man's music and how I feel about it. Enjoy!"

Copenhagen based party starter Dj Universe presents a mix of 100% Azymuth: 

"In February 2015 my friends Sean and Anthon booked Azymuth for a show in Copenhagen and somehow I ended up juggling the roles of being the designated driver, camera man and warm up DJ for the concert. I will never forget those days. The group turned the depressing Danish winter into summer at the snap of a finger just with their presence and the concert itself had one of the most diverse audiences I’ve ever experienced in Copenhagen, all coming together under the warm Azymuth groove. 

Narrowing down 40 years of great music down to a 1h 47m mix was a tough process and I know there are some obvious ones missing, nevertheless I tried my best to grasp and represent the versatile soundscape the group has left behind. The mix spans over 4 decades and about 75 BPM, from the shade of the palm tree to the floor in the club, and I hope it can provide just a little of the magic that I felt witnessing the group play live."

A mixed Medley of 100% Stevie Wonder Compositions, Covers & Cookies created in 2001. Originally released as a double mix cd with Bobbito aka Kool Bob Love and was the pre curser to the infamous Wonder-FULL tribute parties. Everything in the mix is written, produced or performed by Stevie Wonder.

Collecting and djing since his early teens, Mr. Hagan has played at shows, club events and instore appearances alongside Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Jazzy Jeff, Raekwon, Mad Skillz, BEP, Little Brother, Omar, Foreign Exchange, Mos Def, El-P, Murs, Cody Chestnut and many more.

In 2003 Mr. Hagan began interning at BBE records, eventually working fulltime for the label. As an assistant A&R, amongst other roles, he played a vital part in the release of Jay Dee AKA J-Dilla's 'Welcome 2 Detroit Instrumentals' and 'The Art Of OneMind’ by Symbolyc One (S1) & Illmind. He also contributed heavily to the release of Hip-Hop Forever 3 - Mixed by DJ Jazzy Jeff.

Never a follower of trends, he prides himself on discovering new sounds and rocking the crowd with the unknown.
