Miura Chora (1729-1780) was a Japanese poet from Toba (present-day Mie Prefecture). Early in his career, he came into contact with the Teimon School, and bonded with the great Yosa Buson. An admirer of Matsuo Bashō, he strived for a return to the simple tones and spirit of the latter's poetics, criticizing the vulgarization of haiku of his era and advocating the so-called "return" to a Bashō's style.

A generative meditative piece inspired by the following haiku:

stillness:
the sound of petals
sifting down together.

The Vulgarization of Haiku [ naviarhaiku571 ]

Over an existing drone I had made from the “quiet” ambience of my house I added three slightly different versions of a stretched treatment of an electronic version of the opening bars of the theme from Star Trek: Voyager.

Also added was a long stretch made from the tonic chord of the theme, pitched an octave down, for a bit of gravitas.

Again, you may, yourself, be experienced recording drone music, or you may never have recorded any. You may not even be sure what drone music is, in which case read up a bit. Not matter your experience and familiarity, please give some thought as to what constitutes drone music.

Step 2: Think about what makes a melody, even a very slow and simple melody, different from a drone.

Step 3: Now record a piece of music that is, objectively, a deep drone, but somehow within it, somewhere well below the surface, include a slow-moving melody.

Petal's Stilness

The opening hit represents the strong trunk of the tree from which the wind strips the tree of its leaves and flowers where the high notes of the piano thru a delay represent the sound of the petals sifting down together. There's a drastic 'ping' that occurs that's meant to symbolize a pebble thrown into a still pool of water and how the ripples bounce back and forth and mix together but ultimately calm is once again restored.

I went back to VCV Rack for the virtual modular for this one as I could achieve what I wanted more directly using fewer modules. The patch contains some sequenced elements as well but when I came to perform and record I didn't feel I needed them. 

Following suggestions from people more experienced than me I've done a little bit of remastering and updated this track.

This album emerges from the rediscovery of an accordion following the loss of a close relative an instrument that had been a constant companion throughout their life, weaving itself into the fabric of childhood memory. At its core lies the recognition that both human and
accordion share the same essential act: breathing.

The accordion becomes a meditation on mortality and memory, its bellows expanding and contracting like "lungs", its air valve releasing pure breath without melody—the raw pneumatic essence of life itself. Every sound originates from this single instrument, largely unprocessed, preserving the intimate relationship between human touch and mechanical response.

It’s an investigation of how an instrument can hold the memory of hands that no longer play it. The mechanical whispers, the subtle articulations of metal and leather and wood become a language of remembrance, breathed rather than spoken.

I'm primarily a visual artist both 2D and 3D, for the last decade I've operated almost exclusively in the digital 3D realm.   since the late 80s I've made periodic forays into the sonic world, MIDI sequencing, minimalism, musique concrète, found sounds  and improvisation. I am seldom happy with anything and seldom consider a piece finished.
