Chase the Silence

V4 of part 1 of "Warning!'. Something different for ya. 

This thing has turned into like 2 or 3 songs, but in my head it will be one pretty long piece. It has a lot going on, hopefully not too much but then again that's the fun of it.  

Theme of the song is around one of my favourite Dreamcast games of all time, "Ikaruga". A notoriously difficult shoot ‘em up from the late 90’s. More broadly speaking, it’s about fighting, not giving up, then having to do it all again even once you’ve defeated whatever your version of a final boss is in life.

Note: It’s been a while since I’ve released anything, so like I originally set out to do, I’ll be uploading development versions of songs as I go along. I’llll title the versions so it makes sense to all of us and include them in a dedicated playlist.

Main changes/updates:
- Iikaruga theme song intro. Altered Beast was still cool though

- Tidied up the intro which sucked up most of my time. Added in some additional gameplay sounds from the game I found online

- Was jamming along to the track and came across a little motif that changed the whole direction of the song again, but for the better I think… Still messy, but just getting down the pieces so I remember what’s what

- Got some new bass plugins. I’m a Bogren Digital fanboy through and through now. For rhythm stuff at least...

- I’ll retrospectively upload the older versions from when I started work on this gigantic time sink 3 weeks ago this week or next

"Nuclear" dropped on Halloween 2024, and the timing couldn't have been more perfect. This instrumental came from one of those darker places in my mind - that apocalyptic sound I'd been hearing for years but could never get out until AI gave me the tools.

At 150 BPM in D minor, this thing is fast and furious, in-your-face heavy metal rock. That tempo is pure adrenaline - it's adrenalinic music for extreme sports and extreme action. D minor gives it that classic heavy metal darkness, but at 150 BPM it becomes this relentless assault that never backs down.

The mushroom cloud imagery says it all. This track is about ultimate destruction, that moment when everything changes forever. But having the drums in the foreground was intentional - music survives even the end of the world. There's something powerful about that contrast between total annihilation and the rhythm that keeps driving forward at breakneck speed.

What really makes this track work is how the bass follows the guitar through every devastating riff. That locked-in synchronization creates this unstoppable force, like the musical equivalent of a shock wave. The bass doesn't just support the guitar - it shadows every move, making the whole thing feel twice as heavy and inevitable.

This one's heavier and more ominous than "Vast and Cruel" or "Brutal Symphony of Chaos." Where those had elements of beauty mixed with the brutality, "Nuclear" is pure devastation. The sepia tone of the artwork matches the sound - it's like looking at the aftermath through old film footage, but set to music that could soundtrack the apocalypse itself.

Releasing it on Halloween felt right. It's the kind of track that captures that primal fear we all carry about how fragile everything really is. But there's also this weird energy to it, like watching something terrible but being unable to look away.
