Talk about a labour of love mate.
It goes like this.
A few years ago in New Zealand whilst digging in the South Island (the city of Nelson) I came across a few boxes of library records. 
For friends not  familiar with “ library records “   these are records made for commercial and non commercial use in the 60s,70s, and 80s . During those times professional musicians would often earn their bread and butter 
going into recording studios and composing music long and short  for use in commercials on radio, TV and in theatre , etc. In modern day use this is often an often a rich source of samples or tracks for producer / DJ types.
Labels like KPM, Bruton and DeWolfe (non of which I’ve used  here) are
So often considered the " diggers choice " and regularly command high prices in the realm of Discog / Ebay digging (especially if a well known Hip Hop track sampled from it )
But it doesn’t stop there. 
Some smaller library labels will do sound FX records, passages of solo instrumentation and use this beautiful simplistic wording on the rear of the cover to describe each piece rather than having song names. (the mixtape cover I knocked up is some of that wording from the actual records  I used ) 
 So what I recovered in Nelson wasn’t necessarily a box of records I could remortgage the house with  BUT it fit into my general digging for music patterns and record sniffs. This is not about rare records. 
After I’d combed through samples for various projects I thought for a year on or off about how I could present these “ brief moments of funk flavoured or related  goodness “
This week I woke up on Monday morning and said f*ck it lets try or at least start it. After 2 hair pulling days and being mentally vacant from my wife and kids for extended periods of time I decided I need to make this happen in a week or I’m gonna over think it too much. 
I started by pulling out everything that moves me and  just playing it over and over finding a batch or an order about how it might  all work. 
95% of these tracks are only 45 - 60 seconds long so I ended up editing ,extending, remixing, juggling and dropping things all over the place.  
On the plus side if you are in the mix thinking “ this is shit, why did Hairy put this in  ?  Remember not long to go !
Initially a foundation  mix was laid down first to get some sense or feel for the music, I recorded some separate takes of juggles and cuts which where over dubbed and  then in classic DH mixtape fashion I sprinkled it with sauce and nuts
I called on a few dear friends  to throw shout outs in there. 
What can I tell you ? Its very cheesy , very brief, very wonky and I hope parts of it will make you laugh. 
This isn’t supposed to be some cleaned up, polished mixtape of high technical calibre. I mean to me its about digging  around for cheap records and find that gold within. 
Its funky, fuzzy, its rocky, its spacey, its disco, its spiritual its crackly with latin its jazz in there and over all. Theres a lot of technology available today to time stretch and beat match  but I keep it as honest as possible.  
I want to extend thanks to all the musicians that played on these joints ( non of which are credited on any sleeve )   and for those brief moments of nice movement or feel.

It might take a while but it feels good.

DOIN IT IN THE LIBRARY MIXTAPE (2021)

Because of our weekly 2-hour radio show, making and releasing mixes is something we don't get around to often. They tend to require too much energy and often end up feeling ephemeral, a drop in a bucket that's already full to the brim.

This 5.5 hour mix is a live recording from us, Paul Raffaele & Barbie Bertisch, DJing at 718 Sessions on Sunday November 21, 2021, a gig we recently played that meant a lot to us. Benny Soto and Danny Krivit will celebrate their 19th anniversary next week and the party has long served as a beacon of light in our world: a place to learn, be with chosen family, release the pressure and experience joy.

This lineup was originally booked for March 22, 2020 but it was cancelled due to COVID. Luckily, the same lineup was revived for the party's return to indoor dancing, taking place at Good Room in Brooklyn. This night was particularly special because it was the first time we would play 718 Sessions, our favorite party, as a duo.

In a pivot from what one might expect from our sets, we made a conscious effort not to play any Garage or Loft classics to widen the musical offering of the party and avoid overlap with Danny in the main room. Some mixes are great, some aren't, but in a bit of a protest to today's world digital perfection, we've kept it all in there and serves as a record for one of our favorite nights DJing together ever.

We recorded line in from the mixer but also the sounds of the room, blending music and crowd together and resulting in what you'll hear throughout the mix. It's an effort to capture some of the room's energy and not just a collection of songs one after the other.

Our style is representative of an amalgamation of the DJs we grew up listening to and studying, most intensely: Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell, François Kevorkian, Danny Krivit, Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy, Louie Vega, Dope Jams, Theo Parrish, but there are many more. Thank you for the inspiration.

Next up in our Record Club guest mix series is Wyndham Earl. A friend of Bongo and a much admired music producer, vinyl-fanatic, Time Spun Records head and proprietor of King Records in St.Leonards-on-Sea. Through his Time Spun Records imprint, he has produced and released a solo instrumental LP and 2 albums by Psych Rock group Rokurokubi; and in the past written music for Khruangbin. We are big fans of his 'Epoch' album, so much so we placed it ninth in our favourite albums of 2020. It's a psychedelic trip through dusty downbeats and cosmic compositions drawing on jazz, folk, hip hop beats, prog, library music vibes, and more. A fantastic album throughout and essential stuff!!! Pretty much one year ago, I gave in to the urge to pull all my best Gospel records together and make a Gospel Tape to be published right before the holy night. I am not religious albeit spiritual. I am not much into Christmas jams, but I dig the Gospel. And I have my own personal story with Jesus that I might share one day but if you've read Paulo Coelo - The Fifth Mountain, there are certainly paralells. 
Nowadays I believe in the positive ideas of religion that can uplift the spirit. 

But what I am really interested in is Gospel Music. 

These records are like colours to me. Many people are used to experience the same colours over and over again. While there is so much more music to love and fall in love with. Use it as a gateway into other universes. I ve tried that with my twitch series earlier this year. Together we ve just listened through my record collection and we hardly listened to a song twice. I want to shout out Zoe, Jayne, Zuzi, Oria, Angel, Keta, Kelly, Frankie, Josh, Brian, Johnny and many others and Special thanks to Chris and Rob for introducing me to the platform and carrying me through the process. Despite the digital aspect it has been a wonderfully human experience on many levels. 

Thanks for listening and have beautiful holidays, no matter what faith you have or not have. I believe in life as the most precious entity that connects us all.
