Good things come to those who wait. The album 'The Children of Scorpio' by Project Gemini aka Paul Osborne is a result of his steeped 30-year musical journey that’s seen him dig deep, study his record collection and re-emerge to fine-tune his craft. 

A cinematic musical journey that plays out like a long-lost soundtrack (think cult B-movies of the 60s and 70s); 'The Children of Scorpio’ was formed from Paul's love of a myriad of genres; from European library music, acid folk, psych-funk, vintage soundtracks and the contemporary breaks scene. The album draws on iconic classics such as the masterful cinematic funk of Lalo Schifrin's 'Dirty Harry', Ennio Morricone's 'Vergogna Schifosi’ and Luis Bacalov’s 'The Summertime Killer’, to name but a few. You can also hear the folk sounds of Mark Fry's iconic 'Dreaming With Alice', the Britsh folk-jazz of The Pentangle and the David Axelrod-produced 'Release Of An Oath' by The Electric Prunes, woven into the cultural tapestry of this gem. The influence of these vintage productions of the 60s and 70s is evident; however, it could be argued that there’s also echoes of the funkier psychedelic moments of bands such as The Stones Roses and The Charlatans, alongside contemporaries such as The Heliocentrics and Little Barrie, thus giving the album a broader crossover potential beyond the world of crate digging and vintage soundtracks.

A bass player and musician since the age of 16, the arrival of his first child in 2010 saw Paul move away from live performance and retreat to his home studio, recording a wealth of music that was destined to never be heard. One of the first tunes to be made was a demo entitled ‘The Children Of Scorpio’, inspired by his long-time obsession with Lalo Schifrin’s soundtrack to violent Clint Eastwood cop classic 'Dirty Harry'. Recorded for fun, the track was fated to sit in the archives untouched. However, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, connections to a wealth of inspirational musicians and labels would re-ignite Paul's musical fire and give him the impetus to develop his slept-on ideas into something more concrete. Firstly resulting in releasing two limited 7'' records on Delights Records and now the long-player for Mr Bongo. 

Assisting in the recording of the record were several close friends that have helped spark Paul's musical creativity along the way, including well-renowned guitarist and Little Barrie frontman Barrie Cadogan (who contributes killer six-string guitar to four tracks), Delights Records head-honcho Markey Funk (who adds spooked out keyboards to ‘Path Through The Forest’), Kid Victrola, the chief songwriter and guitarist with French psych girl group Gloria who added wild 12-string to ‘Scorpio’s Garden’, Haifa-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Shuzin who brings the heat behind the drum kit, and Paul Isherwood, co-founder of Nottingham’s The Soundcarriers, who mixed the album on his wealth of vintage gear.
We are delighted to be releasing this slowly-brewed timeless classic that manages to achieve that rare feat of keeping one foot firmly in the past whilst still sounding totally contemporary.

BCR Radio Episode 045 - Thee Marloes - Nada Indonesia

Brazilian 7" singles (compactos) are often the source of hidden treasures. Those special obscure nuggets that tend to be overlooked and flicked past in shops and flea markets. Carlos Bivar's 'Amargo Amar' is one such find, nestled as a B2 on the end of a four-track 7" EP on Esquema Records from 1978. This seldom-seen slice of Brazilian sunshine is the second single taken from miche’s third With Love compilation on Mr Bongo.

The ZBETO EP is one of only two 7” singles that we are aware of, released by the pianist, singer, and songwriter Carlos Bivar. 'Amargo Amar' starts with the swagger of a ‘70s Blaxploitation soundtrack, transitioning into a loose Brazilian MPB-funk. Floaty keys, uplifting horns, and backing vocals elevate the energy, as Carlos' lyrics ride the groove. This song is a sheer delight and an example of the talented output of independent Brazilian musicians, as equally great and bold as their major label contemporaries.

Having just released his latest solo album Paper Can’t Wrap Fire to critical acclaim, Don Glori treats listeners to a special new version of album track ‘Song for Ants’. A more stripped-back, ethereal take on the original, this alternate version was born out of being on tour and the limitations it brought with it.

Whereas the original is a spiritual journey of energetic intricacy, full and fierce, Don’s new version dials things back into dreamscape territory. The pace slows, the phrases have more space to breathe, as the synergy between keys, bass, drums and horn erupts into a cosmic-fuelled saxophone whirlwind. 

In Don’s own words “This version of ‘Song for Ants’ was born from being on the road and not being able to have two horns in the touring lineup. I love the melody of ‘Song for Ants’ and wanted to include it in my live set, so I wrote this new version around the melody. It has a bit of a rock edge to it, so I leant into that. It was definitely inspired by acts that can sit in that jazz crossover space like The Necks, BADBADNOTGOOD, GODTET, Kamasi, and Nala Sinephro - all artists that I think are terrific at taking you on a journey.

The first time we played it out was last year in Norway, followed by London Jazz Festival and then I took it around Australia on my last tour back home. Seeing the reaction that it was pulling out of the crowd (as well as myself), I knew I had to quickly get in the studio and lay it down. I remember it was the 10th of January, and we had an impromptu show at Kindred Bandroom that evening, plus a festival set at Loch Hart festival the next afternoon (three hours away on the Great Ocean Road), with rehearsal scheduled for the morning of the 10th. So, I decided to can the rehearsal and go for the studio instead. It was the right decision, we got a great take of this track as well as a few new songs for the next record.”

Ruby Rushton return with cinematic new single “Walk to Regio's”, the lead single from the London UK jazz quartet’s highly anticipated 'Legacy!' album on 22a Records.

As a bandleader, flautist, saxophonist, producer, DJ and label boss, Tenderlonious has earned his polymath stripes. On "Walk to Regio's", Ed takes inspiration from multi-talented legend Isaac Hayes, in particular his ‘Shaft’ soundtrack. 

“I’ve always been obsessed with film music and it’s played a key role in my approach to composition. Issac Hayes’s ‘Shaft’ soundtrack is one of my favourites and has had a big influence on my music over the years. “Walk to Regio’s” is my salute to Issac Hayes and is a nod to one of the coolest films ever made!”

Ruby Rushton trade the hustle and bustle of 1970s Harlem for the restless, ever-shifting energy of contemporary South London. A hypnotic piano motif sets the tone, locking into a deep groove laced with crisp horns and percussive layers. The rhythm section stays tight and purposeful, giving space for quick bursts of improvisation - each solo a snapshot of raw, soulful musicianship. It all circles back to that familiar refrain, closing with a flourish that feels both grounded and soaring.

'Legacy!' marks the fifth full length outing from the Ed ‘Tenderlonious’ Cawthorne led group who helped pave the way for the recent wave of jazz that has ignited the capital and enchanted the world.

Further embodying Hollie's dedication to staying true to herself and remaining authentic to her craft, it has the air of a timeless production yet with a contemporary edge. 

Providing the perfect send-off and closing track to Shy Girl, ‘We Share Love’ is a celestial cover of Skip Mahoney & The Casuals 1974 classic. It sees Hollie and the General Roots band flip the soul-infused original into a hazy, sun-soaked roots beauty. Hollie’s dreamy tones are supplemented by a bouncing bassline, tender organs, and lush vocal harmonies from the brilliant Jalen Ngonda. Bathed in emotion and grounded in love and longing, this reggae reinterpretation is an exquisite ethereal ending to the album.
