Got into DJ'ing in the early half of the 80's.Originally i started off off life as a breakdancer but was also  drawn to the scratching element of the music.So,as one did back then,i cut out a slipmatt from an old pillow case and got to work on an Amstrad stack system.I couldn't use the volume control so had to use the function button to cut the sound.This gave it an Eric B style scratch,messy but it did a job.It didn't take long for the turntable to eventually die on me so i used anything that played records until i finally got my 1210's in the early 90's.
I'd constantly be chucking out mix tapes but unfortunately living where i did the want for hip hop wasn't there so i moved onto the club circuit.
I did that for a good few years but got bored as the crowd then was only into what was in the charts and i liked breaking new stuff so eventually i knocked it on the head and only did the occasional house party.
Many years later,by chance,i bumped into an old friend who told me about some software he used to mix on.I got it and started putting some mixes together.This was all cool but i got bored quickly just blending one track into another every 5 minutes or so so started doing mash up mixes.I figured if i was using a program to mix then don't do what i could do on my turntables.
I know many DJ's don't class this art of mixing as real DJ'ing and of course they are right but i use my many years experience as a DJ to make these mixes work.
I've had many mixes played on The Streetsounds radio show with Morgan khan and also been lucky enough to be asked to mix up some albums(turning them into minimixes for promotional purposes).
My preference is old school but i do mix modern music also,basically,if i like it i'll mix it.

Ewan McVicar is doing things differently. He’s not following any existing blueprints, nor is he adding a filter to what you see. As a result, DJ Mag’s recently crowned Best British DJ is taking the electronic scene by storm. If you combine the spirit and ethos of the rave generation with a forward-thinking approach to music, vivacious energy and drive to push things in the right direction, you end up with McVicar. 

While his journey may have started in Ayr, Ewan McVicar’s path has shown he doesn't intend to rest until he's left his mark in every corner of the globe. That formative period in his humble Scottish hometown is the bedrock for his success today and after years of honing his craft across hip hop and commercial-leaning sounds in clubs that didn't quite fit his direction, he launched his own enterprise. TEN, the club night that started it all, was the introduction to underground music that he and his town so desperately needed. 

It wasn't just McVicar's hunger for something with a bit more bite that was satisfied once TEN was established, it was a huge success within the town and beyond. A new movement had picked up steam.

His unwavering dedication to pushing a sound that’s intrinsically his own had paid off and after a string of releases via Trick, 'Tell Me Something Good' became a runaway success, all over the planet. The platinum-selling single catapulted Ewan into the public eye and since then, he's not left it, not even for a second. His trajectory has been skyward but crucially, it's been on his terms. 

Musically he's made sure that he's stood firm on his commitment to the underground with releases via Heras Records, Optimo Music, Unknown To The Unknown, Shall Not Fade, Nervous and perhaps most notably Ninja Tune's singles imprint Technicolour, where 'Heather Park' found its home. The track acted as a platform for Ewan to recognise and celebrate his origins while facing forward with his sound. With that, the ode to his former home is one of his most beloved productions to date.

Remixes for The Chemical Brothers, Groove Armada and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs further cement his demand as a technically proficient producer and one that can create music for the main stage as well as sweat-soaked basements. Throw singles like 'Groove Thang' into the mix, alongside hyped collaborations with producers like Kettama, and what you have is an artist who's able to straddle both sides of the fence with ease, a rare feat in today's publishing landscape. 

Ewan's popularity as a selector and performer is arguably the strongest part of his arsenal and with one of the most engaged and active fanbases in the world, his sell-out shows prove to be one of the biggest draws in dance music. 

His sets at Creamfields in the Steelyard have become the stuff of legend, and they showcase his technical ability and prowess performing to crowds upwards of 30,000. His curated club brand 'Handpicked' is a no nonsense night that gives the truest insight into the brain of the clued-up Scotsman and he's welcomed acts like Kerri Chandler, Optimo, Stevie Cox and frequent b2b partner Special Request to play, perfectly surmising his musical tastes.  

Taking curation one step further, 2023 saw the inaugural edition of his beloved Pavilion Festival, Ewan's own festival located in the heart of Ayr on the Low Green, a location that he unsurprisingly holds dearly, in a community that he's now able to lovingly give back.

There are a whole host of new musical projects in the works and most importantly, an album is coming. One that he's been working on tirelessly in the background of his relentless gig schedule and release calendar, one that's set to tell the story of how an ambitious boy from Ayr decided to take over the world and how he's only just getting started.

He thought it could do no harm, he only wanted to try it once - just to experience it, how was he to know that after the first fix his life would be forever dependant upon this substance, how was he to know that from the moment the needle touched the record he would become a fully fledged Bass Junkie. 

Bingeing on heavy doses of 808 kicks and robotic licks Phil soon invested in two turntables, speakers and a mixer to help feed his insatiable craving for electro and Miami Bass. Before long the Bass Junkie had tested almost every vinyl product on the street, this consumption did not satisfy his habit so in 1987 Phil began to manufacture his own supply 

In his suburban laboratory the Bass Junkie spent many hours testing his own medicine, cutting finely-tuned frequencies, chopping them with pure bass and then mixing in raw, uncut beats, leaving loudspeakers smoking and equalizers peaking. Other addicts were keen to sample the Bass Junkie product and Phil was soon involved with some heavy mobs interested in trafficking his trax including Dynamix II who invited him to Miami for a 3 month bender of Miami Electro Bass in the early `90s. 

With addicts worldwide attempting to score his dope beats, in 1996 Phil began Battle Trax to distribute his brutal brand of bass-fuelled beats. Kids were soon overdosing on large doses of Cybernet Systems, Final Dreams, Industrial Bass Machines and Kronos Devices - all variants of the highly addictive Bass Junkie, traces of which have also been found in other lethal labels including Audio Illusion, Control Tower, Breakin`, Joey Boy, SMB, Touchin` Bass, Remote Audio, Firewire, RGC, Fuel, Satamile, Cyberian Knights Recordings, Electrix, Parallax, Panic Trax, Tellektro, Tranzform, [k]rack-troni[k], Rotters Golf Club, X0X and Dynamix II Records. Been loving electronic music since the early days of Electro thru to Hip Hop , House , Warehouse , Hardcore Breakbeat ,Jungle , DnB .
I experienced my 1st illegal party way back in 1989 @ Beyond Therapy in London at the age of 16 ....never looked back

Iv'e always loved the vinyl side of Djing but since iv'e been getting left behind by  the fast evolving Technology and the price mark  /  limited sales 
on vinyl , ive recently (2013) started using Timecode on serato plus cdjs but  i prefer  playing  with timecode out of  the 2 technique's.
