We’re marking our 100th release on Brownswood Recordings with a trip down memory lane… a straight-up retrospective of our favourite reworks from 2006 to 2013.

It was a real pleasure sifting through the archives and so tough to pick out favourites as we’ve been blessed with some amazing remixes over the years. Of course we had to include the classics from the OGs: Osunlade’s Yoruba Soul remix of ‘So Good Today’, thoroughly rinsed at the time and still sounding daisy fresh; Moodymann’s rub of José James; and the mighty Theo Parrish reworking Owiny Sigoma Band’s ‘Wires’. Then there are a clutch of younger cats who have steadily built sterling reputations in recent years, inspiring similar rushes of excitement and devotion amongst the new electronic generation: SBTRKT, Joy Orbison (his first ever remix!?), Machinedrum and George Fitzgerald. Not forgetting nuggets from certified Worldwide fam Quantic (repping Colombia); Michel Cleis (via Chile and Switzerland); and Ogris Debris (Vienna in the house!); plus Deep Medi’s Quest on a rumbling slo-mo disco tip.

There’s one brand new jam in amongst the golden archive material – Mala & Simbad’s Super Dub Mix of ‘Noches Sueños’ – a new remix from Mala’s ‘Mala in Cuba’ project. Pure steppaz vibes for the dance!

Electronic duo Ulrich Schnauss (A Long Way to Fall, A Strangely Isolated Place) and Mark Peters (of the band Engineers) return with a second collaborative album titled Tomorrow is Another Day, released
by Bureau B. This second project offers a sublime exploration into their signature expressionistic landscapes while exploring the potential of a collaborative model in which Schnauss’s keyboards and Peters’s guitar work together in juxtaposition. Release date October 25th 2013

PEOPLE DO [CD|LP|DIGITAL]

John Lemke is a Glasgow based composer & sound designer, originally from Berlin. Working across a great variety of media he explores music and all things sonic through collaborations, live performance, film sound design and especially his work as a documentary composer for the BBC and Channel 4.

Motivated by fusing elements of his more emotive film composition approach with rhythm and space, John creates a distinctive sound blend on his debut solo album, where percussive, prepared piano collides with abstracted guitar landscapes & disembodied vocal textures to form a danceable, electro-acoustic whole. 

Inside the creaking hollows of an attic treasure begins the uncompromising journey of People Do. Eager to devise a more dance oriented sound on his first full length release with Denovali, and contrasting his more ambient, often orchestral film work, John first found inspiration in the idiosyncratic sound world of his grandmother's piano. With a shimmering past in the silent film era of 1920's Berlin, its very fabric was full of anecdotes. But sampling every string and surface, preparing it with kitchen utensils, let alone playing the instrument itself was only the starting point of the intricately woven narrative of People Do.

With a process including techniques of musique concrète, sound design concepts such as worldising (playing back and re-recording sound through a room) and the use of homemade field recordings from all around Europe, the album is filled with depth and a true sense of voyage. This is also reflected in the various locations the record was conceived and recorded in, ranging from Berlin to Bristol, Helsinki to rural Spain and Glasgow, with guest contributions on viola from Kim Moore (Ex-Zoey Van Goey) and Felipe Sumina (saxophone), only for it to be mastered at Durton Studio by Nils Frahm.

John's dedication to ignoring genre boundaries makes for an album impossible yet needless to categorise, echoing its wide ranging influences, but ultimately existing entirely on its own terms.

French bass experimentalist Kevin Houston, or Heblank, after a handful of appearances throughout the IM catalogue as a remixer or one-off compilation member, finally joins Infinite Machine’s ranks with a single release of his own.
„Beheaded” is a curious beast. An ever-growing, incessant full-frequency barrage of pulsing bass and offbeat hihats, it doesn’t even as much as invite melody into its midst until the 5 minute mark, and even then covertly - meandering pads creating atmosphere and pitched rimshots flurries providing additional complexity. Numerous textural incidentals line the full near-9 minutes of the track, and a submerged vocal bellow punctuates key moments, setting the oppressive tone of the track. This is the sound of seasickness.
XS’ remix wrangles the original firmly into warehouse techno territory, employing a lo-fi approach to off-kilter sound design that only serves to bolster the murkiness. PEEV’s remix smacks of Perc Trax strategies, ramping up the vertigo and claustrophobia via mechanistic repetition and structure and an unbridled urgency in the percussion. Fellow Frenchman my.head’s remix is the well-deserved respite and release after three tracks of eardrum flexing – dark yet dreamy, it glides its wistful bassline alongside a repeated snippet of the original’s vox, intermittently erupting into woodblock-ridden garage segments that fully render what is seemingly a faded memory of euphoria.

We are back with a bang. So lets get to it, and its two Russian producers Ildar Valiakhmetov and Maxim
Ryzhkov aka St. Savor with a track name that sums up the producers nicely!Mysterious Russian Souls is a summery melodic warm gem, deep yet punchy, and perfect for the summer. A great track thats been a staple of Hernans sets, and we can see why. Petar Dundov turns in a solid driver of a techno remix, and from the off you know its going to do some serious damage to some major dance floors. Awesome.
And to add to the already shimmeringly great package comes Ulrich Schnauss, the king of deep infectious layers, who turns in a spine tingling interpretation. Truly superb.
A massive package - do not overlook!
