Dimitra Zina in conversation with the @wonderwheel-recordings label founder @nickodemusnyc & its label manager, as well as founder of the great @bastardjazz, Aaron Schultz.

WONDERWHEEL RECORDINGS started in December 2003 following through from Nickodemus’ label & party called Turntables on the Hudson. It grew organically from dance singles, compilations & albums from local NYC talent to a Worldwide roster that spans the globe and now has an actual office run by label manager & partner Aaron Schultz as well as several employees. Artists as wide ranging as Alsarah and the Nubatones live East African Retro-Pop, to El Búho’s dreamy South American deep sonic fusion find common ground in the melting pot of music & art represented.

Gama is a multidisciplinary artist who adopted a polysemic and enigmatic posture on zir music making as way to express his zir androgynous uncategorizable being. Without words or images, Gama distorts and combine genres, environments and cultures setting up a dream-like patchwork narrative. The music was what first made gama come aboard the Voodoohop spaceship in early 2016, and since then have been exponentially hooked with the group. Gama have also collaborated to audiovisual productions, installations, such as VJ Suave’s virtual reality installation: "The essential is invisible to the eyes” and is currently investigating collective creation and performance art. Gama has just released "Microscopic Cookbook" on Chill Mountain Rec, from Japan.

ODD OKODDO is a Kenyan/German duo consisting of Olith Ratego and Sven Kacirek (@sven-kacirek)

The two artists met in Kenya, about a decade ago, when Sven Kacirek was recording his "Kenya Sessions", an album that put Kacirek on the map of outernational producers. It was reviewed as a "World Music 2.0" (de:bug magazine), whose "fascination endures" (The Wire). Olith Ratego also made an appearance on the "Kenya Sessions”, on the track "Too Good To Be True".

The duo formed the project ODD OKODDO in 2018, with the two musicians joining their various talents which dovetail in perfection. Ratego writes the lyrics and vocal melodies while Kacirek composes, records and produces the arrangements of all nine songs on AUMA. They create a colourful, dynamic sound which is defined by both Ratego’s enormous vocal compass and range of timbres as well as Kacirek’s outstanding skills as a sensitive percussionist.

Olith Ratego sings in a musical style called "dodo", which originates from the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya, high in pitch and soulfully expressive. He refers to his music as "dodo blues". His lyrics touch upon the topics of politics, family and of course: love. As a skilled luthier, Ratego builds his instruments himself, like the five-stringed Okodo which lends its name to the project.

Sven Kacirek is a multi-instrumentalist who has been commuting between Germany and Kenya for many years now. In the past he has closely collaborated with various international musicians, among them Nils Frahm and Shabaka Hutchings. Kacirek’s sound builds upon a powerful bass marimba which is present throughout the album. It sometimes invokes the sound of a tuned 808 kick-drum. He works with an arsenal of Kenyan percussion instruments as well as household objects and found materials. Kacirek has now settled into a signature sound which has been described as "thrilling and dizzyingly inventive" by the Australian Cyclic Defrost magazine.

Resulta que el árbol del vecino creció tanto en este último tiempo que una mañana desperté y tenía una gran rama metida en la cocina comedor de mi casa.
Se ve que entró durante la noche, por la ventana que está debajo del extractor de aire.

Ni bien la ví me quedé parpadeando sin entender, y antes de que dijera nada ella se meció, y en un lenguaje sin palabras me recitó una poesía de sus hojas, de las mas amarillas.

Fue tan dulce que me conquistó al instante, entonces la invité a desayunar conmigo y aceptó hamacandose en un sí.  

Inclinándose hacia el té de canela y clavo dijo: “ Solo espera a que se enfríe un poco y echalo de a sorbos sobre la tierra que esconde mis pies.” Y así lo hice.
Nos miramos durante un largo rato, y luego de un gesto de corteza comenzamos a hablar.

Fue una charla en silencio, donde hablamos de la importancia de los días de lluvia, que aunque a nosotros los humanos no siempre nos moja, también nos riega.
Coincidimos en que los rayos del sol en la mañana son los mejores, y de lo especial que es la luz en otoño.

Le conté de qué manera nos afectan las estaciones, y se sorprendió al saber que también nosotros estamos bajo la influencia de la luna y sus ciclos. 

Yo me sorprendí de que estuviese al tanto de la vida de todos los demás árboles y plantas del barrio, y de lo bien que guardan sus secretos. También cuando me habló de la rapidez con la que aceptan el dolor de sus pérdidas, no lo podía creer.

Así pasamos la tarde filosofando como buenos amigos, y al llegar la noche dejó que me hamacase sobre ella hasta quedarme dormido.

A la mañana siguiente la rama no estaba mas allí, y al asomarme por la ventana me entristecí al ver que el vecino había podado el árbol por completo. Entonces desesperado le grité al tronco amputado cómo podía ayudarlo, y ya no respondió mas.
Pero en mi desconsuelo miré hacia abajo y ví la respuesta. 

La rama había dejado de sus semillas por todo el piso de mi cocina comedor.
