Nils Frahm steers the new edition of Late Night Tales - a hypnotic voyage through modern and classical composition, experimental electronics, jazz, dub techno, soundtracks and soul - set for release on 11th September.

"I’ve really got off on working on compilations lately. It’s such a wonderful way to delve deep into your music collection. My flat is now crammed with music media of all stripes, from an old hand-cranked 78 phonograph player to 45s and albums on vinyl, my beloved old cassette tape collection, even mini-disks and, lately, WAV and MP3s. It’s all music to me. After spending hours recording from all of these diverse sources, I started to play around with the tunes, layering them, sampling, looping certain parts, extracting phrases and using all the freedom that this allowed me. If I got a little carried away or stepped on anyone’s toes in my quest to do something interesting and original, then I apologise. Some things may have accidentally landed on the wrong speed, while other spooky happening have occurred along the way, whether it’s ghostly additions of reverb and delay or simply subtle edits or reproductions, they've all gone into the magical stew I've tried to create for your pleasure and edification. I can’t tell you how much fun I've had creating this compilation for you but, suffice to say, I hope it will be a nice journey for your mind and heart."

Ukrainian pianist Lubomyr Melnyk has often felt that his unique Continuous Music playing is akin to water – flowing and ever connected. As he further developed his technique, and the more the notes flowed, the closer to water he felt. “I found my hands and arms and everything inside them changing from normal muscle and flesh to well... water.”

With his latest album, ‘Rivers and Streams’, Lubomyr focuses deeply on this connection to water, to the point where the music itself begins to embody its liquid form. Produced by Robert Raths and Jamie Perera, the album flows seamlessly from the live recordings of ‘The Pool of Memories’, captured in a church, to pieces entirely born in the studio, such as ‘Sunshimmers’ and ‘Ripples in a Water Scene’, which feature Perera on acoustic and electric guitar.

Amorphous, ever-changing, Lubomyr as performer becomes subsumed into the natural ebb and flow of the keys as the album drifts between nascent upstream trickles and deeply reflective passages through winding river valleys. The album reaches its climax in ‘The Amazon’, a 20-minute piece dedicated to the world’s largest river. Raths invited Korean flautist Hyelim Kim to guest on the first part, before Lubomyr closes the album with cascades of arpeggio figures, stretching across the breadth of the keyboard with rapid virtuosity.

Following on from 2013’s ‘Corollaries’ album and last year’s ‘Evertina’ EP, Lubomyr’s latest offering compounds upon his existing fluid signature style, and breathes an organic vitality, both nuanced and thoughtful. 

"In the body of the Continuous Piano Master, the fingers and the hands turn into Water, Air and Stone. These are the three manifestations of the Continuous Technique. And for the Continuous Pianist, the fingers physically transform the music into one of these three elements.

The greatest of all miracles in the universe is Water. It is also, I believe, the rarest of all physical things in the universe. The cover artwork shows the surface of vines captured with macro photography by French artist Marion Benoit, which Lubomyr discovered in early 2015 as the perfect visual counterpart.

Take a trawl through Mushrooms Projects’ ample back catalogue, and you’ll immediately be struck by their constant artistic progression. Throughout their career, Giorgio Giri and Marco Lentano have refused to stand still, with each successive release offering a subtle signs of musical evolution.

They’re at it again on Rivea Corymbosa, a sophomore set that’s markedly different – albeit similarly minded – to their 2013 debut album, Undergrass. That album bristled with psychedelic intent, offering fuzzy, thickset fusions of dub-disco grooves, gritty funk-rock guitar licks and acid-fried musical flourishes. It was in marked contrast to their early 12” singles, which offered a nu-disco-era take on the pioneering Cosmic Disco sound developed in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s by fellow Italians Daniele Baldelli and Beppe Loda.

With Rivea Corymbosa, the Parma-based production duo has moved on once more. For starters, it’s far breezier and more positive in feel than many of their previous releases. The claustrophobic atmosphere and drowsy textures, so noticeable on Undergrass, have been replaced by the kind of lazy, sun-kissed vibe that evokes thoughts of Adriatic sunsets and afternoons spent by the pool on the Italian Riviera.

Even more startling is the duo’s expanded musical repertoire. The album features a much wider array of elements, from the title track’s darting Rhodes keys, vintage synth solos and wah-wah guitar flashes, to the humid pedal steel lines of “Baiano”, and the husky spoken vocals and spooky flute solos of the sparse, bongo-laden “Pulsacao”. They’re not afraid to utilize their own field recordings, either, as the children’s chatter underpinning recent single “Dirty Bolas” perfectly proves.

Throughout, the percussion feels loose and organic, the guitars casual but funky, the keys sumptuous and sensual, and the bass lines warm, rich and intoxicating. It’s the sound of two confident musicians, comfortable in their art, making music to soothe minds and gently tease punters towards the dancefloor.

Shifra Rifka - Need You To Lift Me Up (jiony Remix)

Boundary-pushing composer and sound designer Andi Otto returns with his new album ‘Rwandance’, which sees live instruments, studio recordings and sampled archival material melded together as part of an electrifying reimagining of the musical traditions of Rwanda.

‘Rwandance’ is a collaboration between Rwandan dancer and musician Evariste Karinganire and cello player and electronic music producer Andi Otto, brought together by a chance connection. Inspired by Steve Reich, Mark Pritchard’s Harmonic 313 and Otto’s mesmerising musical experiences touring India, Otto built software to translate the intensity of Karinganire’s hand claps into different synth notes - the structure and time signature of traditional Rwandan music providing the framework for Otto’s creations, new instruments and sounds incorporated into its parameters.

Otto follows a path similar to many producers from Latin America’s burgeoning electronic music scene but instead of using Andean folk music as a starting point, he reappraises Rwandan music mirroring traditional sounds but similarly, reimagined through a contemporary lens. ‘Rwandance’ follows Otto’s 2016 link-up with Indian singer and actress M.D. Pallavi and underground hit ‘Bangalore Whispers’, a showcase for his original approach to cross-cultural musical dialogue. He has since cemented that reputation with subsequent albums “Via” and “Bow Wave”, weaving global sounds into his distinct sonic approach.

Shika Shika is a home for music that combines organic and electronic sounds, a meeting place between the past and the future. (They also put an emphasis on supporting artists, splitting profits in their favour.) This chimes exactly with what Otto wanted to achieve in his collaboration with Karinganire, taking deeply-rooted traditions and giving them a new sonic make-up.
