Being a long time resident DJ somewhere teaches you the sort of skills that stand you out from the pack. Cologne’s Lena Willikens is one such special selector who has very much made Salon Des Amateurs in Dusseldorf her own. As well as serving up singular sets there, she is also a key part of the Comeme Records crew with the likes of Barnt. For them she hosts a regular radio show, and for them she has released her brooding, industrially bleak techno sounds. 

Lena’s influences come from well outside the normal cannon - proto techno, industrial boogie, synthesised disco, outlier house and robot jack all characterise her work, and the set she has served up here. It is one hour of unusual grooves, unsettling atmospheres and metallic textures that are abstract and dehumanised and take you to a raw and visceral place that is hugely intoxicating. Easily one of the best mixes this year so far in our humble opinion!

Underground club music has a penchant for existing beneath the radar. Its parties squat in the sweat-soaked shadows of unsuspecting dive bars and undisclosed (RSVP for address) locations that are constantly threatened by gentrification and crackdowns by the authorities. Visibility is key to bolstering these vibrant communities but many exist beyond mainstream dance music culture, making them difficult to find outside major cities like New York, LA or Chicago. But still, the momentum behind the Southern and Midwestern experimental scenes is steadily growing and you can now find incendiary sounds across America's heartland.

Disparate cities such as Atlanta, Houston, Milwaukee and Ohio may receive less shine, but the crews and labels behind their respective homegrown subcultures are intent on making an impact. They choose to write their own rules. Pay attention.

Still a work in progress but I thought it’d be nice to get out of my comfort zone. I want to work on my production this year so I thought this would be a good exercise to do. "No Way Back has, hands down, the best audience in the world. You all love music as much as I do, and are out there to hear what the DJs have to share with you, with open minds and hearts. You have guided me through a few of the most off-the-rails and out there sets I've ever done, so trying to play for you from my attic without our feedback loop presented a whole new challenge. In the absence of a human audience, I asked myself: How do I bridge the ecstatic witchy energy of Eris Drew and the hazy cerebral science of Patrick Russell, in a way that works for home listening (and cats)? The answer is found in this set, where I picked out a first track and winged it from there, navigating loose playlists and the metadata of unknown tracks, using the concept of "Eris to Patrick" rather than your energy to guide me."

No Way Back: Streaming From Beyond

A 36+ hour take on No Way Back, with 24 hours of the No Way Back room residents and 12+ hours of the Outer Space room immediately following. An excess of the mindmelting wormhole dance experience followed by many hours of floating in space and beyond. When we considered podcasting some sets, we decided to just release them all, one week at a time, in an order different than their original broadcast, with the concept of bringing further ideas with the continuum to light.

For us the toughest moment of the pandemic shut down was the thought that we could not gather on Memorial Day weekend for our annual rite of No Way Back. We need our community now more than ever, to connect and to feel free, in a world of shifting real and unreal realities, sequestered in isolation, how can we get together? Time feels different now, we have more patience for everything, so we applied that space for exploration to the sets at No Way Back, extending them to 3 hours so the DJs can fully explore their ideas.

The Electrifyin' Mojo would say "if you reach the end of your rope, just tie a knot and don’t let go" and this stream and podcasts are our knot. This was the first ever NWB without a defined space, without the transformational art of Amber Gillen and crew, let's hope we can get together in the future safely. Grab a little bit of netting or a parachute, turn on some red lights, move into another dimension. Please stay safe and live to dance another day.
