Track 1: "Random Acts of Blindness"

What Is This Song About?
"Random Acts..." was inspired by Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" I wanted to play with the dichotomy of an uptempo track, offset by darker lyrics about selective ignorance. For the first time in human history, an explanation for nearly everything is at our fingertips, at any time, yet somehow we have evolved into a culture that belittles intelligence while simultaneously being know-it-alls.

Who Played On This Track?
Jim Gambino on a honest to goodness Hammond organ pumped through a Leslie and Fender Rhodes MKII. More than just icing on the cake, his parts transported the song to the time I had envisioned when I wrote it.

Sean McLaughlin on bass and Mike Levesque on drums, recorded this track playing together. Musicians playing at the same time, especially those that are so honed into the nuance of each others playing, has become a rare technique in 2015. Personally, I think this approach is one of the reasons this album sounds so alive. This is the sound of humans interacting. Real, organic groove by two guys who could write volumes about it. The parts they chose and the feel they employed was as genuine as anything that came out of Muscle Shoals. They're THAT good (though they'll never admit it).

I played electric guitar. This was the first song I recorded on guitar for the album and I decided on a very old school "American Standard Fender Strat plugged directly into a Fender amp, recorded with a clean tone and the amp's reverb tweaked up" approach. Two simple mics, one close and one in the room, would capture the sound. I was so happy with the simplicity and honesty of the guitar tone, that this set the template for the rest of the album.

My vocal approach was rooted in a melodic, light and airy "less is more" attempt, that would add harmonies and harmonic color as the song progressed, climaxing in an old school Soul, giant 4 part harmony tribute at the end of the bridge. I finally let the beast out on the lead vocals on the last 2 bars of the final chorus. Again, "less is more". My wife Jennifer also added additional vocals on the "Oh, Oh" bits, to give a different texture to the group vocal. Yup, she does it all.

Boston based Recording Artist, Producer and Film Composer Munk Duane has a style deeply rooted in late 60s and early 70s Soul and Pop, with unapologetic nods to legends such as Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Prince and Stevie Wonder, crafting a sonic atmosphere that is traditional in inception and modern in execution. Channeling spirits of the past and filtering them through a 21st century aesthetic, Munk manifests an evolution by daring to experiment in hybrids. 

Munk's music has been licensed to hundreds of television and film productions such as Hulu's Pam & Tommy, The 70th Annual Tony Awards, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Hawaii Five-O, 60 Minutes, NCIS and Blue Bloods, to The Sopranos, the Super Bowl Half-Time Show and NCAA March Madness. He composed the original score for the 2015 Indie Thriller "The House Across The Street" starring Eric Roberts and owns Bad Stella Studios, just outside of Boston. Munk Duane endorses Reverend Guitars and became an official Reverend Artist in April 2016.

Recently, Munk has been busy composing for companies like Extreme Music, the production music arm of Sony Music Publishing. Extreme Music creates and licenses music for use in television, film, advertising, and online media.

"Seeing my name next to Hollywood composing legends on the Extreme platform is completely surreal.", Munk explains. Extreme Music is powered by A-List talent including Quincy Jones, Hans Zimmer, Snoop Dogg, deadmau5, Ice-T, Sir George Martin, Atticus Ross, Tina Guo, Ramin Djawadi, Harry Gregson-Williams, Michael Giacchino, Timbaland, James S. Levine, Xzibit, and Junkie XL.

Additionally, the smart sleep device company Hatch contracted Duane to create an entire custom channel for their product. Munk recorded over 10 hours of exclusive original content, that follows specific scientific methodology to help users wind down, sleep, and wake up feeling refreshed. Hatch is the second company Munk has worked with to help restless souls reach an optimal sleep state. His previous engagement composing for the Bose Sleepbud II helped inform compositional and sound design choices, specially designed for the task.

Munk Duane has appeared in major press including a feature in Billboard Magazine, as well as The Hollywood Reporter and The Boston Globe. He has been a guest lecturer for the Professional Development Seminar at his alma mater Berklee College of Music.
