<i>"My parents used to tell us stories, folk tales and there were a lot of different stories involving tortoises - they often made tortoises sound like human beings. There was one about a tortoise who had a farm and I always thought, ‘how could a tortoise have a farm?!’ This tortoise is working on his farm and a pretty lady is passing by. So, he cuts his foot with his cutlass and pretends that he is injured so that he can get her attention. The lady comes over and tries to help him and he says, ‘I can’t work with this cut. Could I climb on your back to go to get help?’ She agrees, he climbs on her back and she starts to walk. He says, ‘I’m too far up, could you push me further down your back?’ Finally, the lady realises that he is up to no good, she is very unhappy and tells him to find his own way. Once she has left, the tortoise continues to play this trick on other women.

We've tried to avoid hosting exclusives from the same artists, but sometimes the tracks that make their way into the Flux inbox are simply too enticing. This is a remix of South London's Afriquoi by Krywald & Farrer. 

For the last 6 years, Afriquoi have been drawing from diverse influences across the African continent and repackaging them with a dancefloor aesthetic. "Can I know you" is no different, resulting from a collaboration with Kakatsitsi - a group of traditional drummers, dancers and singers from the Ga tribe of Southern Ghana.

Switzerland-based collective Alma Negra are back on Detroit Swindle's Heist Recordings imprint with their 'Conversation' EP, featuring a title track that takes listeners on an excursion through ecstatic tribal rhythms and percussive riffs.

After their first appearance on Heist in 2017 with their standout 'Endless Summer' EP, Alma Negra turned their attention to releasing on their own self-titled label in 2018 and touring their new live show across Europe. Now they return with a collection of intricately woven deep house gems on their 'Conversation' EP, showcasing motifs that are equal bits meditative, funky, gritty and dreamy, all with a place on the dancefloor. 

The 'Conversation' EP, which comes complete with a remix by Awanto, is set for release September 17.

The Mushrooms Project are well known for their sleazy mid-tempo laid-back percussive style, a sound that immediately resonated with rising stars and newly signed label mates Earthboogie.

Specifically it was ‘Dubby Bolas’ from the Italian duo’s 2016 album ‘Rivea Corymbosa’ album that really excited Earthboogie and equally, the Mushrooms were fans of the afro disco sound the Londoners displayed on their debut track ‘Route Ten To Interzone’.

The mutual appreciation led to this remix project which complements their productions styles with great effect.

Mushrooms Project boys Giorgio Giri and Marco Lentano are back with another strong 12", this time mixing fellow Italian disco outfit Soupaczar (so far as I can tell - Under The Shade never give us the barest sniff of sales info...). Their mix of "So Mr Leary" turns the Italo-prog of the original into an Italo-cosmic-prog driver. It's the A-side rework by Mixed Blood Cuts / Padded Cell man Richard Sen that really caught my ears here though. He dispenses with the rock vocals and heads straight to the dancefloor with an epic cosmic disco driver that really gets in a tight, funky groove - perfect 2am play. Ray Mang is also on hand to add one of his organic, percussive disco refixes, turing the vocals into a disco-not-disco holiday pop sing-along.
