Where Do You Belong?

The Ghent home of Reinhard Vanbergen and Charlotte Caluwaerts has proven a cornucopia of wonderful pop music in past years. From the critical triumph of their indie-disco project Rheinzand (alongside Mo Disko) to a sprawling catalog of solo and collaborative albums, the two seem to have struck upon a bottomless goldmine of dazzling electronic pop.

On this newest release, the pair team up with electronic sound magician Reinhard Roelandts to deliver a teeming bundle of intelligent and atmospheric electronic pop. From the bleeping neo-psychedelia of ‘More Than I Wanted’ or ‘Consolation for the Times’ to the shrewd art-pop of ‘Bitter Silhouette’ or the quirky aquatic charm of ‘Only Love’.

The sound is playful and whimsical yet assured and sophisticated. It is a more humble and reflective pop than for example Rheinzand’s operatic disco. Still not afraid to rock the house, though, as evident on the galvanized ‘Days in Between’ or the rousing, anthemic ‘Dagger’. References span from Animal Collective to Cate Le Bon to Scott Walker.

This truly enigmatic sound is built from Roelandt’s maverick experimentation with homemade modular synths layered among multi-instrumentalist Vanbergen’s acoustic arrangements. This was also the recipe for last year’s Reinhard & Reinhard. The new element now, of course, is Charlotte’s vocals. But it is an addition that alters the shape, the songs here being more structured and dramatic, built around the enchanting vocals and their wistful and dreamy lyrical motifs.

Gaining notoriety with stellar remixes for Rheinzand and endorsed by the likes of DJ Harvey, Bill Brewster & Sean Johnston's ALFOS, Scorpio Twins return with their take on Jambo Maro from islandman's 2020 Kaybola album. Giving the track a typical end of 80's Belgian flavour, the build-up from an enigmatic whisper through a magnetic buzz results in an ever growing tribal chant by the islandman and his cult, getting down with their bad selves, tripping out on a dose of lysergic waffle, not falafel.

Setting out to create a future Balearic anthem while doffing a cap to street soul and synth-heavy Italo-disco B-sides of the early 1980s, Orbs of Light’s debut single, ‘Billion Days’ lands on Leng after a tip-off from Mind Fair duo Dean Meredith and Ben Shenton, who booked the duo to play live at their Rotation festival last summer.

Orbs of Light’s Baz Bradley and A Girl Called Kate have been friends for decades and have collaborated musically in the past, though it was only a couple of years ago that they dreamed up this project. It was first trialled via a 2021 remix for Andres y Xavi on Hollis Recordings (‘Perfect Timing’) on which Kate added new vocals to Bradley’s interpretation of the track. Since then, regular recording sessions have taken place, with the duo first crafting tight instrumental tracks before – in Bradley’s words – “dream up the best songs we can” with “melodies that will hopefully stay in your head all day”.

It would be fair to say that they’ve achieved that goal on ‘Billion Days’, a hooky and addictive affair whose vocal hooks and strong chorus could well inspire Balearic sing-alongs in the months ahead. Their original mix (B1 on the vinyl version of the EP, track 2 on the digital EP) is joyous, cheery and kaleidoscopic, with steel pan style melodies, bouncy synth stabs, jaunty lead lines and Kate’s wonderful lead vocal riding a shuffling, post street soul beat and a bubbly bassline.

The accompanying remix package is naturally very strong too. San Francisco crew 40 Thieves, fresh from dropping a killer single of their own on Leng (‘The Gift’, with disco legends Gary Davis and Cinnamon Jones), step up first with a take that stretches out and builds on Orbs of Light’s original mix – think wobbly nu-disco synth bass, fresh flute sounds, dubbed-out vocal snippets and a locked-in groove that’s just perfect for sun-soaked alfresco dancing.

Fittingly, the second and final revision comes from Mind Fair, whose email to Leng HQ about Orbs of Light got the ball rolling. Opting for a rubbery, body-popping beat inspired by vintage electro, they deliver a joyful, effects-laden Balearic dancefloor ‘Dub Mix’ that somehow makes a genuinely life-affirming record even more loved-up and saucer-eyed – despite the presence of only a fraction of Kate’s addictive lead vocal.

Music For Dreams are proud to announce that a new album is underway from the electronic pop-ensemble Hess Is More. The first track from the project, titled

Led by Danish drummer and composer Mikkel Hess, the ensemble has released 12 albums since 2003, donning a shifting constellation of musicians from both sides of the Atlantic. Hess Is More’s material combines styles of electronic music, jazz, krautrock and afrobeat in a pop-oriented, melodically rich sound.

The act is also known for its work across mediums, collaborating with visual artists, designers and filmmakers, recently producing the highly acclaimed series of dramatized concerts slash art installations known as Apollonian Circles.

The forthcoming album, titled CÆKE, bridges back to Hess Is More’s early albums, with the act scaled back down to a solo operation of Mikkel Hess writing, producing and performing most of the music himself. The result is a more minimalistic and personal sound than the sprawling material of later ensemble-projects.

The first single, titled ‘You And Me And Them’, is a gentle, spacious pop composition built around piano, drum machine and vocals, all performed by Mikkel Hess. A pristine and wistful mood that blooms and deepens through soft, twirling melodics.

The song was written by Mikkel Hess his wife Nira Kehar in their countryside home. The serene mood of the track reflects this setting, capturing the intimacy of time spent by the piano. In Mikkel’s own words, “the song is a close-up view of life as it unfolds twenty years after the first album came out, and a reaching out to those who might be listening from the beyond.”

The album is scheduled for release in late 2024 on Music For Dreams.
