currently i'm working on integrating the mutable instruments plaits source code into an external for maxmsp. 
this is a first little demo - 'out' goes to left, 'aux' to right channel.

October Grounds, 8 is the 2nd of two album preview pieces for the album
October Grounds (1-8)

In this piece I used my 8th mosesa. If you compare how the mosesa 8 sounds to the 9the one, you may hear that it has higher pitches, thinner strings and a thinner, lighter character.
As with October Grounds, 6, I mixed external and internal effects to get the sound quality that you hear, it is a semi-acoustic instrument using a thin wood bowl to filter and preamplify the sound quality before being processed. The intent is to have an instrument that is as versatile and as expressive as possible as established world instruments are such as the viola from Western Europe, the Kamnache from the Mid-East and the Erhu from the Far East but offering new sound qualities not heard by those instruments.

Compositionally speaking, this is an improvisation as the other 7 pieces are on the album, and this is the concluding piece, ie. summarizing the themes I used in the other pieces. 

As with “October Grounds,6”, this one is also a “modern modal piece,” meaning I intentionally use the physical and auditory vibrations of the instrument to find dominant tones and then to respond in contrast with sounds that cause expressive tension, but to also use sounds in degrees of concordance to blend towards resolution for expressive tension and release.

Fanoplane's performers this evening: Bob Boilen (ARP synth), Jerry Busher (percussion), Maggie Gilmore (vocals), Sonia Maria Herrero (violin), Doug Kallmeyer (bass), Corey Thuro (mandolin) and T. A. Zook (NS Design Omnibass strung as a basscello). This performance was unscored, unrehearsed and improvised extemporaneously on the spot and was the first time that these musicians had all performed together. stefan schmidt - born 1974 in baden-baden/germany - is a guitarist, composer and improviser. he gathered his first musical experiences as a member of various punk bands and then studied classical guitar at the hochschule für musik trossingen with professor andreas higi and the conservatorio juan josé castro in buenos aires with victor villadangos.
since 2000 he has released more than 20 albums (from 2001 till 2014 using the moniker 'farang') and created music for films, plays, exhibitions and dance performances.
he is also working as a teacher for classical guitar in baden-baden and karlsruhe.
his sound may be described as a melting pot, integrating elements of industrial and noise as well as of asian, arabic and contemporary classical music.
while early projects put focus on distorted sounds and rhythms, recent works center about slowly evolving structures, sounddesign and free improvisation giving more emphasis on his main instrument, the classical guitar and the exploration of other stringed instruments as the tenor ukulele and the bass ukulele .
