Hidden Life is an immersive piece redeveloped for the NOW building at Outernet London, inspired by the beauty, diversity and crucial existence of Plankton, our oceans’ tiny drifting organisms. It imagines drifting through fields of plankton-inspired organisms, passing creatures who have outgrown their planktonic stage and discovering a sparkling bioluminescent world. 

Outernet is located at Tottenham Court Road, central London, and hosts some of the biggest LED screens in the world. Outernet recieves higher footfall than any other attraction in the UK.

With small plankton and the creatures' worlds designed by Flora Macleod and hero creatures designed and animated by Simone Vulcano (nudibranch & tomopteris), the 3:30min piece imagines drifting through fields of plankton-inspired forms, from phytoplankton to zooplankton, and past larger grown sea creatures that began their lives as planktonic drifters. The piece culminates in the discovery of a glowing bioluminescent world that enhances the beauty of this planktonic ecosystem.

The intricate spatial sound design by Henry Sims includes guitar and synthesizer sounds, recordings from a glacier, and hydrophone recordings in underwater environments, absorbs the viewer into the detailed world.
