haiku #439: Tall trees gently wave / Sending secret messages / Into the Spring breeze

A Lituus to Enclose the Sky
The lituus was an astronomical instrument used in the inauguration rite to determine the direction of the North Pole, necessary for divination. It was used by priests called Augurs to mark a ritual space in the sky, thus creating a templum (sacred area). The passage of birds through this circumscribed space indicated whether a certain action was pleasing to the Gods. The lituus (Latin: Lituus), found at Sant'Ilario, originally consisted of a staff with a curved bronze plate preserved at the tip.
The auspice always preceded the founding of a camp or a city, and the same operations necessary to delimit the templum could establish the cardo and decumanus of new Roman settlements. In these terms, the lituus would have been the first, rudimentary surveying instrument: a tool of the augur's profession and not merely a symbol of his sacred power, which found its foundation and strength in his possession of knowledge almost unique among a population of shepherds and farmers.
It should be noted that the rite was of Etruscan origin, according to the Roman gromaticians themselves, and was probably of a mysterious nature. In Latin texts, we find only the practical procedure for the division of land, from which we must draw some clues for the interpretation of the rite.
Its shape was similar to that of the modern pastoral staff, the curved staff of Christian bishops.

Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Anthony Asher-Yates approached ambient music when he moved to Colombia, being inspired by the diversity of the ecosystems that exist in this region. Known for taking his listeners deep into the tropical rainforest, Bålsam has conjured up a dream world surrounded by nature. Anthony's music is composed by field recordings he does during his walks though the mountains where he now lives with partner Nina Nativa and his daughter.

a good friend of mine painted a series of images based on descartes' "meditations on first philosophy."

i took painting number 6, sliced it into five strips, fed the images into photosounder, the converted the resulting .wav files to MIDI (quantized to 16ths). i used the MIDI clips separately to trigger various samples: kick; snare; low tom; floor tom; hi-hat. i added a steady hi-hat pedal to help navigate the slightly offbeat rhythms.

finally, i layered in a live guitar piece (played through VCV rack, which i first encountered through disquiet junto, many moons ago...)

some possible questions: how can we think about the relationship between something rhythmic (the "beat") and something a-rhythmic (the "ambient" guitar)?
do they feel like two utterly separate streams, or do they somehow inform each other?
also, my track is only one minute long - can something so short be called 'ambient'?
more generally, can such a brief composition claim to establish a mood or atmosphere?

(wittgensteinian thought: i can claim to have felt sad for one minute, but not to have been depressed for one minute. certain moods or states require longer stretches of time to operate.)
