UK based Contours and Yadava team up to release the "Cosmic Echoes" EP, built over numerous jam sessions fusing live percussion, bass, drum machine, synthesizers and field recordings to create a raw EP full of soul and warmth. Released September 4, jointly by Flumo and ANMA Records.

Music is My Sanctuary is proud to premiere the vibrant "Speaking Through Broken Shells", with its bass and drum heavy interaction and influences from the UK jazz scene.

Both Contours and Yadava have been on our radar for a while so we are happy to see them display so great chemistry on this beautiful EP. Destined to sell out, so don't sleep!

MIMS is excited to premiere "MoStLy Gh0sTlY", one of our favourite cuts from the forthcoming Glenn Astro album on Tartelet Records. 

Reminiscent of the ATCQ-sampled Red Clay, it certainly has a nostalgic tinge to it for golden age hip hip and perhaps even the early mutations of jungle and drum & bass espoused by Aphex Twin and his ilk, whilst sounding fresh nonetheless.

Taken from Glenn's forthcoming 'Homespun' album, released on Tartelet Records this Friday October 23rd. His first LP in five years, it has a much more personal tone and feels all the better for it.

Made up of ten tracks spanning 45 minutes, the record twists and turns between electronic meditations, soulful vocals by Ajnascnet, and futuristic electro, carving out a world of spacey eclecticism that is as nostalgic as it is experimental.

“This album is in all facets different from the first one, which was a deliberate decision. No vintage sounds and references, no sampling, combined with futuristic sound design and song structures. Less obvious references, more everything else. I tried to keep it as current and intuitive as possible,” he says.

Known for his chunky beats and fuzzy textures, Glenn Astro was a key figure in the wave of MPC-heavy house music that spread like wildfire between 2013 and 2015. Since then, he has released on labels such as Ninja Tune and Apollo, leaving a distinctive signature on everything he touches.

But Glenn Astro has quietly been crafting a new sound for himself. Sometimes taking detours – morphing into his dark alter ego and experimenting with artist collaborations. The sound of Homespun is a culmination of several years of reflection and artistic development – however, the album itself was produced in less than three months.

“I set myself an ultimatum to finish the album within three months. If I didn’t make it, I’d have to rethink my career path and keep music as a hobby. If it wasn’t for this album I’d be selling home-assembled ballpoint pens now,” he says.

In September 2005, then Washington Wizards NBA player Etan Thomas gave a speech at a rally in Washington DC that slammed the Bush administration and spoke out against the systemic racism and problems facing the Black community and racialized communities in the US. In the speech, Etan takes Republicans and conservatives on a “field trip” to show them the many issues faced by these communities: lack of educational resources, substandard health care, lack of economic opportunities, police brutality, the impact of unnecessary wars and voter disenfranchisement.  

Many of these problems are not only specific to America - they are faced by racialized and Black communities around the world. In 2010 Moonstarr revisited the speech and was inspired by Etan’s words to produce a track, but the song was never released.  

Fast forward to 2020. Etan’s speech is as relevant now as it was back in 2005. The current US administration and hateful rhetoric spewed from Donald Trump, and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement globally, has crystallized Etan’s message. Moonstarr and Public Transit Recordings felt now was the right time to put this song out to share Etan’s powerful message and spread it widely as possible as “The Trip”. 

All proceeds from the sale of “The Trip'' will benefit two organizations: The Etan Thomas Foundation (http://www.etanthomas.com) which helps youth achieve their potential and the Black Food Toronto (http://www.blackfoodtoronto.com) which champions food justice within Toronto’s African, Caribbean and Black communities.

Public Transit Recordings has already made a donation to support these great causes and will match sales of “The Trip” up to $500 to further support these organizations.

BBE Music presents the seventh release in its highly acclaimed J Jazz Master Class Series: ‘Evolution’ by Shintaro Quintet. Recorded in 1984 and originally released on the private label Streetnoise Records, ‘Evolution’ is a perfect example of stately modal jazz with every one of its five tracks composed by band leader and bassist, Shintaro Nakamura.

A cut from the album, ‘A Blind Man’, was included on the BBE Music compilation ‘J Jazz – Deep Modern Jazz from Japan 1969-1984’, and it’s a track that’s indicative of the album’s graceful blend of spiritual jazz and gently swinging minor blues waltzes, a style favoured by Nakamura that allows the band to stretch out and explore the strong melodic themes, lush arrangements and seductive rhythms.

Recorded in New York, ‘Evolution’ features the great Japanese trumpet player Shunzo Ohno alongside a mixed Japanese-American band: pianist Jeff Jenkins, who brings a touch of McCoy Tyner’s percussive blues to the album, has worked with many jazz greats including Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Harris and Clark Terry; US-born Saxophonist Bob Kenmotsu, one- time member of Jack McDuff’s band has also recorded and performed with jazz guitarist Pat Martino; and drummer Fukushi Tainaka, who studied under Philly Joe Jones, completes the solid rhythm section with Nakamura and Jenkins.

‘Evolution’ is reissued as a double 45rpm 180g LP, cut by the Grammy-nominated Carvery Studio. The BBE Music edition features exact reproductions of the original artwork and super-rare diagonal obi strip. It also comes with the original notes fully translated plus a new extended essay and interview with band members by Tony Higgins. ‘Evolution’ is also available as a CD and across digital formats.

The BBE J Jazz Masterclass Series is personally curated by Tony Higgins and Mike Peden and is dedicated to presenting the very finest in Japanese modern jazz. The series features rare material, presented in the highest quality reproductions of the original releases, fully licensed and authorised by the artists and labels.
