With its ups and downs, 2021 was another unpredictable year. It’s been another roller coaster, but I’ll leave it up to you whether the ride was a pleasant one. Luckily, the one positive constant was the amount of exciting new music the year delivered. 

Time for the recap of the best albums, EPs & singles of 2021 - cinematic soul from Durand Jones & The Indications, otherworldly arrangements from Mndsgn, a masterpiece from Pharoah Sanders & Floating Points, 90s aesthetics from Space Ghost, a future classic from Nala Sinephro, and much, much more…

‘Abbey’s Body’ appeared on the 1966 Malompo Jazz LP. After the departure of Tabane, Cindi had taken on compositional duties for the group and all the tracks on Malompo Jazz were penned by the flautist.

A regular at Cocktail d’Amore, Bell Towers is a Berlin-based Australian producer best known for his long-lasting collaboration with Munich’s Public Possession. Next to that, a number of projects under different monikers — namely Rim Boys, an evolving b2b with András.

“I'm Moving To Berlin” is his first EP for Cocktail d’Amore Music. It's a sparkling celebration of the party; its influence on the city and on the producer’s life tangents. “It’s too late now / There’s no turning back / I gave it all for Cocktail d’Amor…” Rohan confesses, while a hybrid EBM-synth pop sonic adventure unfolds.

What happens next is presented in “Sexual Intruder Alert” and “Approach and Identify”. The first comes through as a quirky multidimensional future-disco tale, while the second plunges deep into the cosmic hole with punchy percussions and an euphoric groove pattern.

Bep Kororoti & Akin debut on Modern Obscure Music with four Afro influenced tracks. Bep Kororoti released a self-titled mini album on Hivern Discs’ more experimental HVNX sub-label in 2016, but he is better known for making music as Kresy. Here, Kororoti is joined by Akin, who provides vocals and saxophone on this EP. Epomuyeñ is dancefloor cut with striking percussion and strong vocals, whilst Eruobodo is a sax dominated track. Ijotiya channels the spirit of Fela and Afrobeat over a spinning bassline, whilst Love is the only way has a deep spiritual vibe and a powerful vocal.

New Zealand’s brightest new star, Vanessa Worm returns to Optimo Music with the first single from her upcoming album, “Vanessa 77”, which was due out in May but has been postponed until later in the year due to current uncertainties over vinyl releases.

This track is FIRE and had been road tested to phenomenal response. Vanessa 100% has her own thing going on and has been tearing up the Australian and New Zealand club and festival circuit with her incendiary live performances.

We asked her for some words about this song, which feel particularly relevant to our current predicament - 

"To me, In Heaven We Are is almost a kind of Mantra. I speak to myself and therefore to you, to the collective & to the Earth. Asking us to see heaven, to feel heaven, to ask you what your version of Heaven on Earth is, and to encourage us to live that, breathe that and be that. In order to bring light, new creation and love to this earth, ultimately to aid in the Healing of the Earth and the people within it."
