We are very excited to premiere the fresh jazz sounds of “utabiri”, our favourite song from their forthcoming album ‘Modern Uganda’ for U Know Me Records. 

U Know Me tells us that the band has already broken up, which seems a shame considering the creativity displayed on songs such as “utabiri”, where led by the soothing vibraphone chords, the skittering drums propel the brass, rubbery basslines and a summery rhythm guitar, complemented by subtle electronics and loops.

"Utabiri" means "weather forecast" in Swahili. In this case the band are imagining a "good weather forecast". 

delay_ok was a band from Gdańsk, Poland, which was formed in 2017 and played together till 2020 in the belief that making music must be fun. It was a trio consisting of Piotr Chęcki (tenor and baritone saxophone, flute, casio), Szymon Burnos (synthesizers, moog, guitar, vocals) and Jacek Prościński (drums, spdsx, percussion). On this, their debut album you can also hear the peculiar sounds of the Sopot's MDK Orchestra, the guitar of Michał Z ienkowski and a Tanzanian rap by Alex (Alex Mussa), met in Zanzibar.

"We create impulsively, not ignoring our first - sometimes trivial - ideas,because it is in them that we find the joy that accompanied us at the very beginning of our musical paths. W e do it so that we can sit together in front of the speakers and have fun listening to our own songs again. "Modern Uganda" is a small collection of our interests, so we kind of do it out of the selfish need of doing something for ourselves"

The band oscillates around the sound of IDM, lo-fi, and other sub-genres of modern electronics, with an element of jazz improvisation. The album was DIY recorded and is a tribute to the most famous African ski jumper from Uganda - Dunstan Odeke.

The "Modern Uganda" vinyl record comes in two colors (flamingo pink and classic black). Mixed and mastered by Maciej Milewski, the cover photo with shoebill was taken by nao-cha, a Japanese artist from Tokyo.

Another exciting premiere today. Crimi share a fresh sound for our ears with "Chi Ci Talia?" a hot Mediterranean stew of funk, rock and more.

"Chi Ci Talia?" is the latest window into Luci e Guai’s forthcoming eight-song LP. Out on French imprint Arfono this April, an enticing blend of Algerian raï, hard New Orleans funk and Sicilian folk balladry that feels very psychedelic. 

The band’s background and pool of experience is fantastic. Formed in 2018, Crimi finds Julien, a musician with over 20 years experience, collaborating with a brand new trio of players. However it is the singer & sax player’s past ventures that combine to explain how he hit on this sound specifically his work with Mazalda, from Lyon, who evolved from jazzy pop oddballs into a drum-heavy live dance party with their own fifty-speaker travelling soundsystem, the ‘Turbo Clap Station’. 

In recent years, they branched out into raï – first meeting Algerian singer Cheb Lakhdar and backing him in a series of concerts, and later recording an album, El Ndjoum, with Sofiane Saidi, a star of raï’s new electro-wave who’s also featured with Parisian duo Acid Arab. (Mazalda and Sofiane proved their mettle by playing the Algerian city of Oran, raï’s spiritual home, in early 2020.)

Meanwhile, Julien also performed with La Squadra Zeus. Although from the Alpine town of Chambéry they dedicated themselves to the traditional folk styles of southern Italy, nearly 2,000 km away, with Julien playing Sicilian flute and Calabrian bagpipes in the trio. 

Julien learned so much about this music and its relationship to the region’s culture – including, ultimately, the realisation that he wasn’t cut out to play these trad arrangements in straight fashion. Be that as it may, the musician envisaged potential new soundclashes, and the first stirrings of what became Crimi were in his rewirings of three traditional Sicilian songs which appear on the forthcoming album ‘Luci E Guai’.

Eahwee Feat. Ninjah Aragniz - Yah Yah (STW Premiere)

Originally released in 1980 on short-lived Oregon label ‘Match Box Recordings’, ‘Burnin’’ is the only album recorded by Portland jazz/funk band Carl Smith And The Natural Gas Company.

At the time of the release of this album, Carl Smith’s band had already been performing for almost two decades, starting out as the ‘Carl Smith Orchestra’ in 1959, fusing 40s and 50s big band styles with rock’n’roll, before gradually morphing into the more compact jazz / funk influenced outfit you can hear on Burnin’.

“Carl had this bright red delivery van he bought from the natural gas company. He got a hold of that thing and that’s how we went on the road. When we’d roll up to the gig they’d see this big van full of musicians and on the outside it said “Natural Gas Co.” Then out comes Carl Smith and it’s all over.” – Lee Bradford (trumpet, flugelhorn)

The orchestra that Carl Smith founded was a Portland institution for about 50 years all-told, becoming an essential training ground for young musicians on the come-up; even the later Grammy-award winning trumpeter Chris Botti passed through at the age of 17 and Jefferson Airplane’s Signe Anderson was a long-time collaborator. It was “hard to find many jazz players around here who haven’t played with the band” said Smith in a 1980 interview with The Oregonian. They performed at festivals, universities, nightclubs, dance studios and even military bases from Portland to Seattle and everywhere in between, opening for Dave Brubeck, Buddy Miles and Johnny Ray among many others.

The story of this album’s recording has gone down in infamy among the remaining band members and Carl Smith’s daughter Carlee (who performed lead vocals on ‘Love Won’t Let Me Go’), all of whom recall a fraught, rushed recording process, led by a producer who had no musical experience and was nothing more than a puppet for the somewhat shady label owners. This led to the album being cut too fast and accidentally pitched up a key, so if you want to hear it as the band intended, pull the pitch control down a little on your turntable.

“Turns out the whole thing was backed by a bunch of farmers from central Oregon who were looking to take a loss… So here we were playing out and selling records. As soon as we were about to hit one thousand copies sold, their plan was to stop promotion so it would die…but we didn’t know that.” – Peter Piazza (trombone, electric violin, euphonium)

Upon its release, the album received airplay on several radio stations across Oregon and Washington, the band were invited to play live on local TV channel KGW, and copies sold out quickly within the local area. Despite the bitter-sweet circumstances around the record, Burnin’ remains a fantastic document of this well-drilled and talented group of players, showcasing original funk, jazz and soul compositions mostly arranged by Larry Dunlap, who went on to become musical director for the Pointer Sisters and write for Cleo Laine during a long and fruitful career in music.

The original label’s intentional sabotage of Burnin’ has made it a rare and sought-after album for vinyl collectors the World over, so we are delighted to reissue it for the first time ever, complete with its original artwork, accompanied by liner notes providing a detailed oral history of the band, as told by several of its original members.

We’re thrilled to welcome back Montreal’s OJPB (aka Bowly) to Lazy Days following his brilliant 2018 Lucy’s Stomp EP. OJPB’s music has a very singular poetic voice, equally influenced by Detroit, Chicago and early UK Grime/2-Step Garage as well as taking inspiration from french cinéma and littérature. As a DJ, OJPB became a firm favorite on the Montreal local scene with his unique eclectic style ranging from Techno, House, Disco and Breaks. Recently, he played at 24 Hours of Vinyl, Pik Nic Electronik for the 15 Years of Lazy Days and has a forthcoming Mutek set in a few weeks.

The EP opens with Théodore Le Fou, a dreamy cinematic Deep House number that also features an obligatory remix by Fred Everything. Phonétik digs deeper into his UK influences with tight drum programming, cut up sampled vocals and those lovely strings. Ottomatik closes the EP in style with a broken beat rhythm, strings and rhodes melodies.

Since the first volume in February 2018, the J Jazz compilation series has showcased some of the most creative, inspired, and sought-after jazz recorded in Japan during a golden period spanning the 1960s to the 1980s. Illustrating the richness and versatility of the composers and musicians on this collection, the music spans a wide yet coherent range of styles: samba, funk fusion, modal, spiritual, post-bop, and bossa all combine to present an aural portrait of a jazz scene that was constantly moving and shifting its multiple musical centres of gravity.
