"Percussionproject" is an album by Touch Of Noise, an experimental percussion and jazz group from Bielefeld, Germany, which has started performing nearly three decades ago! 

This album reminds of early Midori Takada's melodic percussion work and other ambient-esoteric percussion recordings of that era, yet still adds a fresh breeze of contemporary 90s fusion and pristine-quality recording on top. Founding band member Jochen Mariss told me, that this kind of music and musical approach was very untypical and even a little weird during the time period it was produced, especially in western Germany. 

The Percussionproject „Touch Of Noise“ originated in the year 1988. It emerged from our fascination with the power of rhythm, which often serves as mere accompaniment in contemporary music and typically adheres to a 4/4 time signature. We aim to extract rhythm from its supporting role and place it at the center of attention, without neglecting melodies. In addition to drums of all kinds and origins (from Pakistan to Guinea, from Brazil to Ghana), we primarily employ percussive melodic instruments such as the marimba, tuned Thai gongs, steel drums, glockenspiel, kalimba, as well as saxophone and vocals. Many of the inspirations for our compositions (and many of our instruments) come from travels to countries with rich rhythm-based musical traditions, such as Guinea, Brazil, Morocco, Cuba, among others. Our objective is not so much to authentically reproduce other music styles, but rather to combine African, Latin American, Oriental influences with our own musical ideas to create a diverse whole. The compositions are rarely predetermined. Typically, there is a basic idea that is collectively developed within the group. The liveliness and unifying power of rhythms are most palpable for us during our concerts, which is a significant reason why we enjoy being on stage. Our music aims to enchant listeners with the magic of rhythms, to move (quite literally), to touch and ultimately spread good vibes.

Allergy Season alum Love Letters and label boss Physical Therapy team up to tackle new territory on Hunk. In two distinct versions, the duo explore prismatic soundscapes and gut-rattling bass.

Echoing across 13 minutes, the ‘Ouroboros Mix’ is an epic of dark dub in half-time. Layers of heady sound build and decay through the song’s several movements, while ballooning delays ricochet across syrup-thick low end. It’s a winding trip, weaving tension and release.

The pair buff things up for the ‘Herculean Mix,’ a stripped back techno interpretation, which builds Hunk’s heavy bass lines from squelch to squall. The mind-bending sound palette is glued to a breakneck 606 drum machine for a peak time potency.

One of Australia’s most promising jazz-centric labels is offering a tasting plate of its 2020 artists and we’re pretty excited to share with you a quality premiere track to spread the good word. Melbourne label La Sape has compiled seven original tracks from seven Aussie acts for its seventh release, downundaground. Throughout 2020, releases from each act will hit the internet via La Sape.

This is an eclectic mix. Musical director and label mainstay Horatio Luna (whose music we’ve premiered before) and label boss Kurt Paradise have pulled together sounds from the periphery of that which lies under the wide musical umbrella of ‘jazz’. From the slow and dreamy opener by Astral Flex to Proto Moro’s driving, psychedelic, 4x4-rhythms, the variety is broad and musicality deep. Live instrumentation, improvisation and jazz are the only rules here.

Our premiere comes from one of the three bands of renowned Melburnian saxophonist, Josh Kelly. JK Group’s Nutha One begins with Kamaal-Williams-esque synth stabs and Josh’s effects- drenched saxophone ringing in the background over snappily syncopated drums. The sax backs off only to coax out a keys solo and strings that, combined, could fittingly soundtrack a summer night stroll down a lively street. The smooth sonic walk turns sharply but purposely left, however, into something more like a run, as a house beat and sax take us to the track’s sudden and dramatic end.

It’s a fun listen, and one worth bookmarking for its December 13 release. Other artists to feature on the record are On-Ly, Antiphon, Foshe and Big Chief.
