Creating songs of both eulogy and revolution, the expansion of 21st century black consciousness is felt in waves through Ohio's Mourning [A] BLKStar. A force that has deep conviction, purpose, and weight, songs are voiced through the lens of chopped up drum grooves, stark melodies, and historic sample pulls. Afrofuturism is felt in paramount form within the group, scheduled to give the world their sophomore LP BLK Muzak (Glue Moon Records) July 14th, 2017. The album will land on LP and digital formats, followed by select touring in their region. Mourning [A] BLKStar is bringing forth a conversation that aligns with the political and emotional state of this world, drawing together modern day spirituals of reverence and despair.

Formed behind the vision of group leader Ra Washington, BLK Muzak paints a vivid picture of the complexities surrounding the human condition. A survey of life is distilled through the fabric of the album's soul, encompassing themes such as spiritual ascension, structural counter balances in society, diverse communal values, the unchaining of the spirit, love for self, and revolution. Every word and lyric is galvanized into the diaspora of 21st century African-American culture, serving as both a force of light and a schematic to survival and independence.

Taking on influences as wide ranging as Eddie Gale's late '60s spiritual jazz opus Ghetto Music and the world-renowned works of poet, playwright and essayist June Jordan, BLK Muzak is life through sound. With the group comprising vocalists LaToya Kent, Kyle Kidd, and James Longs, a full spectrum of knowledge and harmony is offered. Scintillating vocal runs spiral over smoldering synth bass and hard hitting snares and kicks. An arena where the presence of a Dead Prez and a Gil Scott-Heren are pulled into the same tapestry of culture. The name of the group finds a shared passageway to multiple worlds and reflects the importance of the music, showing honor and acknowledgement to the lives that've died at the hands of police, along with the beauty and expressive legacy of African-American artistry.

When looking at the roads that led to the creation of BLK Muzak, it's important to understand the history of the group. Group leader Ra Washington plots out the following timeline, "It was originally just me doing what I've been up to for more than a decade: make a batch of beats and record over them. But this time I wanted some different voices around me, so I invited LaToya Kent, who I've known since high school, and James Longs who I've known for at least five years. We recorded twenty songs and then after listening back to the roughs, we decided that maybe this could be a band. We enlisted a jazz singer named Kyle Kidd and went back to the studio and recorded eleven more and from that we put together BLK Muzak. I think for me it was a real reflective time. One of my best friends had been murdered and I was kind of floundering in making. I didn't know if I should keep going because it hadn't been that much distro of the projects and I felt like maybe the idea of making a living as an artist was a misnomer. LaToya was itching to record and James had never done it professionally with original content. So I think we were all looking for a spark but we didn't want to just make something, we wanted it to be impactful and original."

BLK Muzak will be available July 14, 2017 on Glue Moon Records and will be offered on vinyl and digital platforms.

When it comes to releasing Lo-Fi house grooves, there are few labels at the moment that are doing it better than Shall Not Fade. In fact, only a couple weeks ago, we were writing about their superb release of Trudge’s “Negative Spaces” on their sister imprint Lost Palms. This is precisely why we find SNF's upcoming release of Italian producer Nicholas so exciting! It appears that the label is branching out of its comfort zone, deciding to come out with a record that is discernibly different from the rest of their discography.

For those that are fans of Nicholas, you are aware that jazz plays an integral role in the music he comes out with. His mini-LP on Seb Wildblood’s Church titled Lonnie’s Reprise is a perfect example of how the house producer has taken his career into a whole new direction; choosing to produce music that feels more at home near a fireplace than a late night on the dancefloor. This is precisely the sort of mood Nicholas is going for in his latest, four-track EP “Sound of Earth,” in which he orchestrates the jazziest of affairs with the help of recent collaborator and Detroit vocalist Nikki-O (aka Sky Covington).

The lead track Ancient Future does a fantastic job of setting the tone for the rest of the piece. Isolated, yet vibrant drum notes mark its beginning, but gradually work in a billowing assortment of keys, high-hats, snares, and horns that become more and more captivating as the song builds and builds. Then, after reaching a climax at the 5-minute mark with a lively duet of trumpets, Ancient Future disassembles itself and leaves in a similar fashion it arrived: with the play of drums. However, they certainly sound more somber the second time around; giving the song an almost fleeting, ephemeral quality.

Every music lover feels a specific, even if sometimes undeserved, sense of achievement when they discover an obscure and underrated artist. So we were particularly stoked when we caught wind of France-based Marc Bianco. The little-known producer is about to again release an EP for French label Moonrise Hill Material – an imprint whose tracks we’ve premiered before – and the record is top quality. The five-tracker is made up of structurally diverse tracks that nevertheless unify under an aesthetic umbrella of sample-heavy, gritty and jazzy sounds.

Our premiere is the last and longest track on the record and probably our favourite, too, Harland Jam. Wonderfully fluent keys as well as splashy percussion staple this track, which you could imagine as the soundtrack for a hybrid jazz-house club. Perhaps it’s most impressive for it’s delicate balance of continuity and change: for the background-listener, the track could sound monotonous, but with a bit more attention the song’s dynamism and slow incline is clear. The track subtly picks up at around 2m30s, with energetic drum fills and keyboard jamming on top of the groovy three-chord progression that repeats throughout.

The record, called Serious Mass, will be the label’s ninth release. If you’re into modern and daring house records with an old-school feel, you’ll probably find it worth a purchase.

Originating from Paris in 2016 Real D, @Jus-Jam, Kerstone, Robin Riccitiello and creative director morningradient decided to join forces to launch this amazing vinyl label – @khasia_hills. Khasia Hills are a very unique label in many different ways, inspired by Meghalaya in Eastern India, this amazing geographical location is home to the Khasia Hills itself, which feature some of the most awe-inspiring “majestous palm trees in the world”. A breath of fresh air in a cramped music industry, on each and every vinyl you receive a special hand drawn palm tree by the remarkable Cambodian/French painter Mr. Syphol Moeur with label co-founder morningradient designing the sleeve. It is easy to see that a significant amount of thought and effort has went into the fine details of this label which also comes across in the material they release.

Release number three for Khasia Hills comes in the form of ‘Monsoon’ [KH003] by one of the labels founders, Jus Jam. This 4-track EP is due to be released next month and features one track that we are extremely excited to premiere, track 2 on the A side ‘Late Night’. Heavenly sounds and blissed-out pads are blended together to produce a pure haze of house lushness something that Jus Jam is well known for. This record starts out with some divine piano keys in the company of always enjoyable bongos, perhaps inspired from the South Asian theme of the label. Taking its time to gently build-up to the emotional percussive groove it is, the varied vocals and horns add great depth and width to this track. Make sure to grab yourself a copy upon release.

Young French musician, LB aka Labat, is about to bolster his already-impressive couple of years of music-making with a release for English house and disco label, WOLF.

The Brighton/London label has a strong following and a discography that will suit an LB aka Labat record. For this cut, called "Trimz & Thangz", the Lyon-based producer offers four dusty-sounding, sample-riddled house tracks of laudable sophistication for a guy in the nascency of what we hope will be a long and prolific career.

Our premiere is B1 on the record, Leaders For The Government, because there’s little we love more than political-house. The track starts with a vocal sample of a man somewhat grimly lamenting the prospect of a government “for the leaders, by the leaders.” But then a sliding bassline, groovy drum loop and funky guitar flurry suddenly open musical proceedings, to shift the track toward a more hopeful direction. “Bees make their honey, I make music,” the man says.

This is a simple track – the instrumentation isn’t particularly inventive, but it doesn’t need to be. As far as easy-listening goes, you won’t find a more amicable seven-minutes of music under the house/disco umbrella. 

The rest of the EP is very interesting and all the songs combined are worth the cost of any high-quality four-tracker, so look out for their release on March 9.

Last time we wrote about the Detroit legend Javonntte he had dropped a project of hazy late night heaters on London’s Hardmatter. Fast forward to today and he’s blessed us with another slew of deep house gems, this time for release on the New York City based stalwart Let’s Play House. Javonntte is a hot commodity right now - last year he released five projects, he’s already got one under his belt in 2018, and there are three more set to drop in March and April. Simply put, the man is a machine. If you follow him on Facebook, this won’t come as a surprise. On any given day, he’s live streaming from his studio, riffing on multiple instruments and analog gear, collaborating with friends, and generally having a great damn time.

One thing you’ll notice if you watch Javonntte’s videos is that he’s a master of the drum machine. Masterful grooves are the centerpiece of this project, and the record’s final track, “Organic J,” is powered by deep jackin’ drums that chug along underneath a gorgeous pad, piano stabs, stuttering bass, and a choppy vocal sample. This is deep house at it’s finest - simple, emotive, and trance inducing. This one will get the late night plays it deserves.

The remainder of the EP is just as solid, and these are definitely tools you need for your bag. Like a classic wool sweater, music of this quality is sure to stand the test of time. Stay tuned for the drop on March 16th.

After Ioanis and Don Son released several releases on USA labels Magician On Duty and Making You Dance Records, we're happy to welcome these two quality artists on Submarine Vibes. They bring us two deep and melodic tracks full of ethno sounds and sampled speech.

The first remix is coming from Armen Miran, USA based producer and DJ, who is well-known for his releases on labels such as Sol Selectas, Time Has Changed Records and Underyourskin Records, as well as his collaborations with artists like Hraach, Love over Entropy, Fake Mood, Amentia. 
Armen takes us on a melodic journey, combining his oriental style with the vocals from the original track - New Earth.

SF Bay Area's TRKRNR (Track Runner) team up with Trailer Limon (one half of SF's The Pendletons) to create two insta-classics for the dance floor and the bedrooms.
