Creating songs of both eulogy and revolution, the expansion of 21st century black consciousness is felt in waves through Ohio's Mourning [A] BLKStar. A force that has deep conviction, purpose, and weight, songs are voiced through the lens of chopped up drum grooves, stark melodies, and historic sample pulls. Afrofuturism is felt in paramount form within the group, scheduled to give the world their sophomore LP BLK Muzak (Glue Moon Records) July 14th, 2017. The album will land on LP and digital formats, followed by select touring in their region. Mourning [A] BLKStar is bringing forth a conversation that aligns with the political and emotional state of this world, drawing together modern day spirituals of reverence and despair.

Formed behind the vision of group leader Ra Washington, BLK Muzak paints a vivid picture of the complexities surrounding the human condition. A survey of life is distilled through the fabric of the album's soul, encompassing themes such as spiritual ascension, structural counter balances in society, diverse communal values, the unchaining of the spirit, love for self, and revolution. Every word and lyric is galvanized into the diaspora of 21st century African-American culture, serving as both a force of light and a schematic to survival and independence.

Taking on influences as wide ranging as Eddie Gale's late '60s spiritual jazz opus Ghetto Music and the world-renowned works of poet, playwright and essayist June Jordan, BLK Muzak is life through sound. With the group comprising vocalists LaToya Kent, Kyle Kidd, and James Longs, a full spectrum of knowledge and harmony is offered. Scintillating vocal runs spiral over smoldering synth bass and hard hitting snares and kicks. An arena where the presence of a Dead Prez and a Gil Scott-Heren are pulled into the same tapestry of culture. The name of the group finds a shared passageway to multiple worlds and reflects the importance of the music, showing honor and acknowledgement to the lives that've died at the hands of police, along with the beauty and expressive legacy of African-American artistry.

When looking at the roads that led to the creation of BLK Muzak, it's important to understand the history of the group. Group leader Ra Washington plots out the following timeline, "It was originally just me doing what I've been up to for more than a decade: make a batch of beats and record over them. But this time I wanted some different voices around me, so I invited LaToya Kent, who I've known since high school, and James Longs who I've known for at least five years. We recorded twenty songs and then after listening back to the roughs, we decided that maybe this could be a band. We enlisted a jazz singer named Kyle Kidd and went back to the studio and recorded eleven more and from that we put together BLK Muzak. I think for me it was a real reflective time. One of my best friends had been murdered and I was kind of floundering in making. I didn't know if I should keep going because it hadn't been that much distro of the projects and I felt like maybe the idea of making a living as an artist was a misnomer. LaToya was itching to record and James had never done it professionally with original content. So I think we were all looking for a spark but we didn't want to just make something, we wanted it to be impactful and original."

BLK Muzak will be available July 14, 2017 on Glue Moon Records and will be offered on vinyl and digital platforms.

'Amor do Verao' is a Brazilian flavoured Broken Beat track that is inspired as much by Azymuth as it is by Kaidi Tatham. Drum samples provide a steady drive for cool Rhodes keys and growling Moog bass melodies creating a warm-up atmosphere to set the stage for a night of broken rhythms! 'Amor do Verao' means summer love, and this track conjures up memories of sunshine, beaches and parties.

This is the first release in a series called “Excursions” by Haze City, where each release will focus on a slightly different sound/style within the Haze City spectrum. Further releases will venture into bass heavy Broken Beat, left-of-centre House, and Footwork. Stay tuned for further eclectic outings!

SF Bay Area's TRKRNR (Track Runner) team up with Trailer Limon (one half of SF's The Pendletons) to create two insta-classics for the dance floor and the bedrooms. 

The A side, Stimulate, a a playfull sex-funk exploration that will elevate dance floors and get pulses racing, while on the flip is "No Summer Days", a smooth, vibey Sade-esque track. This record definitely showcases TRKRNR and Limon's love for creating classic sounding songs that would be at home played back to back with Rick James or Blondie. 

TRKRNR (Track Runner) based in Richmond, California, is comprised of childhood friends Saul Vallens (Allen Valenzuela) & multi-instrumentalist and singer Gyrefunk (Vincent Czekus). The two musicians and dancers, who grew up together in San Jose, Ca., draw on deep backgrounds of house, hip hop, rock and pop to create a future facing, genre-busting sound that is both soulful and highly danceable. Employing everything from kalimbas, djembes, synthesizers, guitars, bass and basically anything they can get their hands on, the two continue to turn out friendly, crowd pleasing music that is modern yet classic. They are at home making four on the floor bangers as they are making psychadelic beat pop, dreamy lounge and tightly produced hip hop.

You Give Me Something (Blacksmith R&B Remix)

Smooth Temptation is a soulful, modern funk inspired tune that plays like a love child between the early sounds of Smokey Robinson and the production styles of Mndsgn and Dam-Funk. The track is a slow burner and features rich vocal harmonies and deep grooves contributed by members from the Montreal soul collective, Busty and the Bass. The song is obviously sexual in nature, and the instrumentation (horns, synths, and filtered piano) adds to its warm, flirtatious sound.

Fusing hip hop with the melodic synths and hypnotic grooves of g-funk, Canadian singer/rapper/producer Alistair Blu is best known as the co-lead vocalist and keys/synths player of Montreal electro-soul outfit, Busty and the Bass. Born in Victoria, British Columbia, he was raised on a healthy diet of jazz, early 2000s hip hop, R&B, and psychedelic rock— perhaps explaining why his solo work doesn’t fit into any one box. 

Alistair Blu’s debut single, “Sweet, Damn, Hold the Phone” serves as an homage to Y2K-era West Coast g-funk. Whereas “Insane,” his follow-up track with Nate Husser of the rap group The Posterz, leaned more into the traditional, bar-trading hip hop fare.

He’s a gifted pianist who made a name for himself with his band. But it’s his command of language and surreal, if nostalgic production tendencies that has established him as one of Canada’s most exciting new solo acts.

– Alistair Blu will be performing his new and unreleased solo material with an 8-piece band, made up of some of Montreal's finest musicians (Caulder Nash on keys, Melissa Pacifico on backup vocals, Shaun Ryan on drums), including members from his full-time musical project, Busty and the Bass (Julian Trivers on drums, Louis Stein on guitar, Scott Bevins on trumpet, and Chris Vincent on trombone) at Petit Campus on June 28th. "Think (About It)" was originally recorded 45 years ago in the summer of 1972 by the fiery Lyn Collins. Produced by the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, it barely scraped into the RnB Top 10 at the time and normally would have been discredited as just another great James Brown production.  In 1987, it began being sampled by a new generation of Hip-Hop artists like Roxanne Shante, Robe Base, and DJ E-Z Rock. Suddenly, the world woke up to the possibilities of sampling; and since that point, "Think (About It)" has been sampled 1908 times and is the No. 3 most-sampled record of all time.

So, for our 250th release, we’ve decided to commission remixes of Barbara Tucker’s incredible rendition of one of our most successful productions. Opolopo really cut loose on this with a funky, disco-influenced groove containing real organs, synthesizers, and horn sections. Believe us; this mix is completely off the hook! This project also contains the production talents of house master Richard Payton, whose work as 95 North in the 90s remain nothing short of legendary. Needless to say, the 95 North, Vocal, and Acid Dub versions of “Think (About It)” are peak hour pieces that will heat up dance floors all summer long. Combining Opolopo and Richard Peyton seemed to be an appropriate way to do justice to a record that simply jumps outta the grooves.

"Think (About It)" still has universal appeal and will be implanted within the DNA of dance music listeners across the world.

Making Love [Kassian Versions]

After meeting at CDR and doing the CDR Process together sponsored by PRS for music, EVM128 and James Rudie started to mess about collaborating with Gonzi who they also met through CDR. 

After coining the concept of INPUT together it needed a home. EVM put it to Tony Thorpe at Studio Rockers and the seed was sewn. The concept is simple, Make a beat, pass it on and let someone else add to it. Its about letting go of self and letting the music go somewhere it wouldn't have gone otherwise ... It was a labour of love and took some time with the sending files back and forth until the track felt right. We brought in a bunch of talented musicians, producers, singers and rappers to fulfil the brief. Its about collaborating together, wether that be involvement in the mixing and arrangement process, performing on the track, adding a keys line, percussion, synth, bass, everything was a joint effort. Everyone got on board and we feel we have created something special and unique where you can hear each persons input in the tracks. We love it and hope you will too.
