Dario Aiello’s first EP for NuNorthern Soul as My Friend Dario, Cosmic Sailing, was one of the label’s most inspired releases of 2020 – a six-track musical voyage into the unknown that cannily combined elements of Balearic disco, ambient, turn-of-the-90s Italian dream house, horizontal jazz-funk and colourful synth-boogie.
With such strong musical motifs and instrumentation to work with, NuNorthern Soul boss Phil Cooper decided to ask some well-established producers and friends-of-the family to put their own spin on the Sicilian producer’s EP. The result is Cosmic Sailing Remixed, a four-track set of reworks that takes Aiello’s mesmerising, atmospheric and enveloping cuts to whole new musical places.
Crazy P’s Chris Todd dons his now familiar Hot Toddy guise for an EP-opening revision of ‘Neve Su Acireale’. Todd makes the most of Aiello’s Pat Metheny style jazz guitar motifs, teasing the track in via an ambient intro that recalls both the Orb’s earliest singles and Steve Reich classic ‘Electric Counterpoint’. After building tension through loose-limbed, progressively more intense drum fills, Todd unleashes a glorious Balearic disco groove that carries the track forwards towards a blissful conclusion.
Sometime Music For Dreams, Hell Yeah recordings and Leng contributor Willie Graff steps up next, brilliantly re-imagining ‘Fenice’ as a hypnotic and bass-heavy chunk of Balearic dub disco rich in layered, samba-style percussion, glistening electric guitar motifs and fluid synthesizer flourishes. Later in the track, Graff introduces more elements from Aiello’s original track – twinkling pianos and dream house style aural textures for starters – before adding touches of tape delay to emphasize the track’s dubby dancefloor mood.
Those seeking extremely immersive, mood-enhancing music will be thrilled by Blair French’s tactile, sunrise-ready take on ‘Malvisa’. The Detroit-based musician and soundtrack composer draws heavily on the kaleidoscopic but mellow synthesizer textures of Aiello’s original version while continually adding new layers of percussion and electronic melodies. The result is a swirling, calming remix that should delight home listeners and slow-motion dancers alike.
To round off the EP, Balearic synth-pop specialist James Bright puts his creative stamp on ‘Storm’. Bright re-frames the most atmospheric cut on Aiello’s EP and a yearning, heart-aching journey through slow-motion acid lines, twinkling pianos, huggable synth-pop grooves and the kind of sustained chords that feel like they’re wrapping your body in a toasty blanket made of the finest cashmere. It provides a poignant, jaw-dropping conclusion to a high-quality set of imaginative and kaleidoscopic remixes.

We are excited to premiere the ethereal electronic grooves of "Mahi Mahi" by Moonfish, the duo project of pianist & composer Maria Chiara Argirò and drummer, pianist & composer Ricardo Chiaberta.

For Moonfish, Maria and Ricardo combines piano, keyboards and synths with drums, bass synth and electronics. Both musicians are an integral part of the London jazz and electronic community, appearing and recording individually with artists such as Rosie Turton, Kinkajous, Liran Donin, Bruno Heinen, Kettle of Kites and These New Puritans.

A lush dialogue between synths and drums/bass synth, their third single features a mesmeric melody underpinned by layers of ethereal electronics and a solid, beat-driven groove. Drawing on mutual influences including Kneebody, Aaron Parks and Thom Yorke, this single is the last in a series of three singles from the duo, offering a new perspective on the piano/synths and drums duo. 

"Mahi Mahi" draws on both jazz and electronic influences to create an dreamy and mesmerising soundscape and an infectious groove. The key to this duo's sound is their ability to apply a sophisticated musical understanding and ability to bear on a beat-driven electronic project, without losing the power of the groove to any temptations to noodle.

Following their anticipated second album ‘Made Of Static’, electro-soul duo Stubborn Heart return with the first release of their remix series ‘Out Of Our Hands’. The three track collection features Plaid, FUMU and Tolouse Low Trax. The latter of which is premiered exclusively by MIMS today.

Detlef Weinrich aka Tolouse Low Trax hones in on the beats of ‘Everything Matters’ to craft an infectious but distant club anthem. Elsewhere on the EP, Warp signees Plaid expand haunting single ‘Talking Gold’ with eerie atmospherics, brazen horn sections and a shuffling, ominous beat and Manchester producer FUMU turns ‘Proves To Be’ into a grinding, industrial cut seeped in a grimy and threatening aura.
 
Stubborn Heart’s poetic lyricism and icy, left-field R&B is refreshed with these reimaginings, taken to occasionally radical directions and deconstructing the very idea of what pop music can do. 
 
On ‘Made Of Static’, the successor to their lauded 2012 self-titled debut, Luca Santucci and Ben Fitzgerald once again struck a fine balance between ominous synth-soundscapes and introspective songwriting. Fitzgerald lead the production and manned the machines to create a rawer sound. Santucci provided the heart and with it his aching, obsessive lyrics and a desire for something grittier in its presentation.
 
Santucci has amassed an impressive list of writing and vocal credits in his time, with the likes of XL and Warp signee Leila Arab, Plaid, Riton and Soulwax amongst them. Fitzgerald has also been hard at work at his home studio programming various styles of music for artists and producers from around the world. As Stubborn Heart, they come armed with some serious experience and a wealth of influences. There’s an honest simplicity in the way they create, with lyrics written in an immediate, direct fashion with the aim to catch a feeling rather than emulate one.
 
On their first album Stubborn Heart garnered praise from the likes of Pitchfork, NME and the UK broadsheets. It was named album of 2012 at Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards and Rough Trade placed it in their top 20 best albums the same year. However, it’s now that we’re presented with an album they feel better represents their dynamic – an album born from the duos combined creative static – as such, ‘Made Of Static’ and its accompanying remixes are the first fruit of their reunion, aiming to step on from where they left off, and with the promise of much more to follow.

Skip/Jump/Make Some Noise! -  a Psychogeographical Sat Nav by LoneLady feat. The LRM

A new track by LoneLady commissioned by The LRM to celebrate their 10-year anniversary exhibition at The People's History Museum, Manchester.

The LRM (Loiterers Resistance Movement) is a Manchester-based collective interested in psychogeography, public space and uncovering the secret stories of the city.  Since 2006 they have been organising public walks, dérives (drifts), games and spectacles offering new ways to explore the streets.
