New Zealand disco-boogie outfit Flamingo Pier plant some Brooklyn roots with their fresh new ‘Beneath the Neon EP’ on Razor-N-Tape. Known for parties in East London and their massive hometown festival, as well as previous releases on Soundway, the Kiwi collective deliver a trio of new songs that solidify and expand their signature danceable blue-eyed indie-soul sound.  
Lead single ‘How 2 Feel’ shows a clubbier side of the band, with a pulsating house rhythm and layers of angular synth stabs, vibey horn lines, and vocal chants. ‘Beneath the Neon’ and ‘Remedy’ are more familiar Flamingo Pier territory, upbeat indie disco anthems that boast incendiary vocal hooks, funky guitar work, and crisp production by Luke Walker. Rounding out the EP there are two remixes from Chicago house legend Glenn Underground, and RNT co-head JKriv, whose mix features a guest appearance by Afro-boogie royalty Steve Monite.  Out on Sept 1st, and oozing with hazy sun, ‘Beneath the Neon’ is the perfect soundtrack to soak up the dog days of summer.

Apparel B-Day 6: ...Arresting vocal samples then take the foreground in a rich, smokey mix before Istanbul’s Kerem Akdag’s closes up the package. Akin to the styles of producers such as Henry Wu and Max Graef, Akdag’s ‘Friend’ melds playful drum patterns with thick chord stabs and smooth vocal lines that wrap up a stellar return for Apparel Music.

It's been 10 years since the birth of Music Is My Sanctuary, and what a 10 years it’s been! Started in 2007 by Alexis Charpentier aka DJ Lexis in Montreal, Canada, Music Is My Sanctuary has been dedicated to discovering and presenting music often overlooked by mainstream music channels through articles, interviews, radio shows, DJ mixes, and events. 

The "10th Anniversary Compilation: Never Stop Digging" is an eclectic collection featuring 17 unreleased tracks from artists who all share the same vision and passion, and who represent the mentality and styles that Music Is My Sanctuary works to push forward. 

Side A focuses on some more floor-oriented grooves from artists who are known for both producing and DJing. Side B (kicked off by the ever-mysterious Clutchy Hopkins) is dedicated to the Hip Hop and Funk heads featuring artists who have all put their own unique spin on genres that have come before. Consider this a Future Classics affair! 

This project is a collaboration with 101 Apparel, who are providing the "Never Stop Digging" T-shirts which can be purchased from 101 Apparel directly. Both the T-shirt and cassette were designed by Montreal's Nik Brovkin. The official Music Is My Sanctuary 10th Anniversary celebration was held at Montreal’s Centre Phi, promoted and broadcasted live by Boiler Room. A big thank you goes out to the artists who provided tracks for this compilation, and to all artists who keep creating such fantastic music for us to share and enjoy. Without you there would be no us, and for this we can’t thank you enough!

For the 7th year now I have been marking the arrival of Spring with this spiritual mix which has become the project that is closest to my heart. In case you're wondering, in Montreal springtime arrives in April - seems like our 6 month winters steal a month of autumn and one from spring.

All year long, I save song ideas in a little notepad just for my Spring mix, it's the only DJ mix that is truly on my mind all year long. It is an exploration of spirituality in all its musical forms, jazz to house to reggae and more.

For me, it's also a form of catharsis and annual goal post marking another year of growth, challenges. I hope this year's edition can provide some inspiration, solace and happiness. I wish you all well during these challenging times.

Hi everybody, welcome to the 25th edition of My Favorite Things, in this Jazz world I love. I’m really happy to have as guest one of the Parisian DJ’s who has had one of the best vinyl Jazz collection I’ve ever seen: DJ Yellow. I met him at Panorama Records, the Shop where I’m currently working, and I can tell you this guy knows his music!

Before becoming one of the biggest name of the French touch movement with his label Yellow Productions which included artists like Dimitri From Paris, Joe Claussel, Salome de Bahia and of Course Bob Sinclar, DJ Yellow was during the 80’s a real old school Hip Hop DJ’s who has played at The Palace, les Bains douches and the legendary ‘Chez Roger Boite Funk’ Party at The Globo in Paris.

After a decade of fruitful cooperations and dedication to helping other people’s careers, DJ Yellow finally decided to begin Composite Records in 2009, as an outlet for his own sounds, and that of his close friends, including King Britt, Dubfire, San Soda and more. As a producter, DJ Yellow is behind many massive club hits like “No One Gets Left Behind” on Compost Records. As a true passionate musical lover, Alain Ho, continues to dig records ton complete his beautiful collection.

For My Favorite Things he did mix to trace a musical path from 60’s to nowadays. As usual I have selected the best of my last digging tracks included the brand new El Michels Affair, Jimi Tenor, Greg Foat and a new fantastic fusion jazz project called The Sultan’s Swing feat Chip Wickham.

Roots Of Vinyl #7 • Jazzfunk

Having been privileged to hear this very early we are super exited to finally premiere Emma-Jean Thackray's "UM 음", the first part of a very special release, recorded direct-to-disc for Night Dreamer Records. Due for worldwide release, vinyl & digital, on July 31st.

Emma-Jean Thackray, an outstanding figure in the UK jazz scene, releases Um Yang, her long-dreamed project dedicated to the Taoist philosophy of duality and harmony. A highly ambitious and personal record that sees Thackray leading a septet featuring Soweto Kinch and Steam Down’s Wonky Logic, recorded straight to vinyl.

Raised in Yorkshire, Thackray inherited a grounding in Taoism from her father, and approaches her music with the same pursuit of harmony between Um & Yang (the Korean Ying & Yang), balancing melody and rhythm, groove and free improvisation, cerebral and physical. For this one-off recording, Thackray has applied this ideology in every sense, even down to the ensemble itself featuring not one but two percussionists. Um commences with ethereal interplay between keys, percussion, and Thackray’s trumpet, recalling the spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane’s classic records. As the piece builds, an earthy groove emerges. On both trumpet and vocals, Thackray leads the ensemble further out until the piece peaks with an epic breakdown.

When Night Dreamer Records invited Emma to record Um Yang straight-to-disc at Artone’s vintage recording studio in Haarlem, Netherlands, Emma was excited by the idea of capturing this specific project in one-take, without overdubs or edits. “Recording in (Artone) was such a dream” Thackray recalls. “It had all the fantasy analogue equipment you daydream about one day being able to use. The desk looked like something Uhura would use. All the instruments were natural, woods and metals, no plastic in sight, and everything was to be hit or blown, all analogue. I really needed everything to be natural and real, because the music is about the universe, about the energy of all things, and what is more real than that.” Honest sound to match truly honest music. With Um Yang, Emma-Jean Thackray has created her most personal and defining work to date.

Hi Everybody, we're almost at the last edition "My Favorite Things" show of this very strange year. 

Show #29 has a very particular flavor cause I’m very happy to receive my favorite Parisian DJ : Emanuela De Luca. To welcome this very special guest, I started the show with a very special track from 1957 by a legendary french singer on a lovely jazz melody. As usual I have selected some of my last favorite diggings like the great cover of the huge spiritual jazz theme  "The Creator Has a Master Plan" by Dezron Douglas & Brandee Younger, a track from the last fusion album from Byron the Aquarius, the brand new Jimi Tenor and Kokoroko and the fabulous Sun Palace’s Edit from Moodymann on BBE. To complete my personal part, here are two lovely soul nuggets : Arthur "So close to you" with its folk attitude and the 1st reissue of the Brand New Kev Beadle Label by Dianne Mower "The Secret Sign".

The Emanuela’s mix starts with some Soul Jazz Gliding including a very actual track called « I'll sing from my window » from O'Donel Levy … if you follow what I mean !!! Her mix carries on with some great deep and mellow tunes by Eiji Nakayama, Noe's Jazz Ensemble, Tom Scott & the L.A. Express, Catalyst  and the italian Sestetto Dino Piana & Oscar Valdambrini. Gradually the selection goes into some wicked fusion Jazz Dancefloor including Ryo Kawasaki (RIP), Boy Katindig and the anthem "Sombre Guitar" by Danser's Inferno.
