MONDAY MIX - SGMM028 by APRO “Apr. 2021”

Italian-born, Berlin-based DJ Luigi Di Venere has been making serious waves in and around Berlin over the past several years – known equally for his Balearic, listening-oriented DJ sets, or his explosive club sets. Luigi is very much inspired by the rave scene of the early ’90s, and his sets make constant references to those infamous warehouse atmospheres, all the while offering an eclectic selection. Luigi can often be found showcasing his talents at the legendary Cocktail d’Amore events series, for which he is a resident. He also once handled the Cocktail d’Amore label management. Outside of Cocktail d’Amore he has been known to grace the decks at many of Berlin’s most iconic clubbing hot spots, such as Panorama Bar, lab.oratory and Sameheads, where he runs his own Maximum Joy events series.

When he’s not DJing, Luigi is our man on the ground at Phonica’s Soho House Berlin shop. He hosts his own radio show, MachineSex, on Radio Cómeme and he hosts Pom Radio – a podcast series based around his own musical insights.

Hi everybody, the MFT show is back with the legend that all the English DJ's simply call "the Daddy". Paul Murphy. 

He is most certainly the first English Jazz Dance DJ and was above all the resident of the famous "Jazz Room" Parties at the Electric Ballroom in London. Still a DJ and now the label Manager of the fantastic Jazz Room Records, Paul Murphy continues to share his culture and collection by reissuing the marvels of Jazz. For MIMS and MFT he agreed to do a 1 hour mix as a guest filled with forgotten treasures and timeless classics.

For the 1st hour of this episode, I mostly focused on a selection of future jazz classics starting with spiritual and ambient jazz like Sven Wunder, Mia Doi Todd feat. Jeff Parker and Sarah Hanahan.

I wanted to highlight new Jazz funk like the cover of "Date with the Rain" by East Coast Love Affair, Zopelar and excluded the new release of the French label Chuwanaga "Latitude". As I often do, I concluded this hour of mixing with the Broken Beat releases of "Lord & Dego" and the remix of Sean Khan by the relentless Kaidi Tatham.

Prolific is an understatement when it comes to the world of Madlib. Diving in head first, people might know him from his most recent work with Freddie Gibbs. Or they might have heard about his acid tinged alter-ego Quasimoto in a dorm room or coffee shop (ahem, imagine you weren't born post 2000). Going further back, a lot first learned of 'The Beatkonducta' with the legendary Hip Hop trio, Lootpack. Regardless of where you learned of him or how you came across any of the ever growing catalog of creations, it is a safe bet there is almost ALWAYS going to be something you never knew was another 'Madlib Invazion'. 

That said, over the last few years I've happily dug around for the often overlooked, or dare I say, forgotten (dude is P-R-O-L-I-F-I-C, no diss) Jazz catalog Madlib has managed to pump out. 'Rugged Tranquility' is my attempt at finding some of the deeper cuts in the abyss, all the while celebrating 20 years of Otis Jackson Jr's Jazz masterpieces. - PK

 Born into a famous family of Warsaw Jewish musicians, Jerzy Peterburski composed several tunes which helped set off the tango craze in Poland. This poignant melody was first a hit as “To ostatnia niedziela” [The Last Sunday], with a Russian recording released in 1936 as “Utomlyonnoe Solntse.” The lyrics of the 1933 Polish original describe a pair of lovers about to part forever after one last tryst. The 1936 remake tells a similar story and became a ubiquitous nostalgic classic, later featured on numerous Soviet film soundtracks, notably Yuri Norstein’s 1979 animated masterpiece “Skazka Skazok” [Tale of Tales], as well as Nikita Mikhalkov’s eponymous feature [translated commercially as “Burnt By The Sun”] and Krzysztof Kieślowski's Polish feature "White,” both released in 1994. These Yiddish lyrics were learned from an online video, as sung by an unnamed Odessan woman; alas, this YouTube version has since vanished from the Internet. Thanks to Yelena Shmulenson for referring us to this gem, and for her transcription and translation of these lyrics, which closely follow the Russian version; and to Yuri Vedenyapin, whose verse made us wonder.

This time again, Kadebostany team up with their visionary visual allies Supermafia VJs who deliver the game-changing aesthetic signature that's cemented their reputation.

“Castle in the Snow” showcases a different facet of the Kadebostany universe; a mythological tale wrapped in a twisted atmosphere. The abstract imagery suggests a post-apocalyptical sight of the republic in ruins, gradually rebuilding from its ashes through the powerful sound and light emanating from the republic's orator, guards and president.

“Castle in the snow” is an ambitious work that pushes further into the unique musical and visual territory that Kadebostany occupies.
