DRUMAX 20 ASTEROID BELT

From the idea of Andrea de Fazio and Andres Balbucea, Parbleu defines itself as an "equatorial groove excursion". The ensemble combines elements of cumbia, Afro-Caribbean & psychedelic rhythms with a French retro style that breathes summer sunset sounds, sea salt, and maracas. In May 2023, with the release of the new album "Elios"
with Periodica Records, the band consecrates its sound, making it characterized and identifying the project.

Hi Everybody, my seasonal MIMS show is back after a short break.

On this episode of MFT I’m very happy to welcome Malcolm Strachan, Scottish trumpet player and member of the Haggis Horns.

As usual I have selected my favorite recent discoveries like the spiritual jazz tracks fromy Àbájade, Jazz is Dead Feat Lonnie Liston Smith and Organic Pulse Ensemble.  I also included the amazing last tracks from the well known contemporary Jazz Artists Soul Supreme and Sven Wunder.

For his part, Malcolm Strachan has chosen for us some of his favorites and main influences tune including some great Trumpet and Sax players like Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Harris, Stanley Turrentine and the Master Dizzy Gillespie.

I had so much fun playing this 5 hour journey at KAIF Lounge, one of my favorite places on the tropical island I call home.

Highlights:

- Lots of Bossanova, Jazz, Brazilian, Afro-Latin, Trip-Hop, Instrumental Hip-Hop, RnB, Funk, Reggae, Calypso, Cumbia, and other genres and styles
- Brazilian covers of a few well-known songs
- I really enjoy playing a few versions of the same song
- My own remix of "Iansa ma virgem", a sweet Brazilian song

With just two single releases under their belt to date, the Jakarta based trio Batavia Collective have made an instant splash on the music scene with their infectious brand of neo-jazz fuelled funk, finding a highly receptive audience in the process.

On their latest ‘BTCV’ EP, released on genre shifting Belgian label R&S Records, the collective return, this time coming heavy handed with four new instrumental pieces, each one brimming with mesmerising melodies and dramatic passages.

As on previous singles ‘Propulsion’ and ‘Affirmation’, Doni Joesran, Elfa Zulham and Kenny Gabriel continue to enthral with a level of musicianship and musical nuance that goes beyond words, as the seasoned players drill deep into the soul of the genre and peel off four stunning recordings with ease.

At pains to not be defined or pigeonholed, BTCV explain “we are often asked what kind of jazz this is. To tell you the truth we don’t know. We don’t even know if our music can be considered jazz or not. We create the music through jamming, and afterwards, we vote on certain compositions together,” say the collective. Who said modesty was dead!

NAZCA By Paploviante Sax Remix

This song explores the artists’ relationship with capitalism in the United States. The composition invites the listener into an introspective space with alternating vocal and instrumental sections, drawing from influences of 70’s funk/fusion by Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter as well as classic Hollywood film orchestration by Henry Mancini. The song features keyboards and a synth solo by Telemakus as well as vocals, keyboards, and horns by Ted Taforo and drums, and production by Efajemue.

This is the second single from the upcoming Jazz album by Ted Taforo and Efajemue.
The music in this collection includes songs which were written as recently as this past year and some which were written as long as ten years ago. We explored our relationship to space in terms of distance, as some songs were recorded live in person, others assembled remotely due the constraints of the pandemic. Our goal in the production of these compositions was to create organic material which blends elements of improvised language with processed electronic textures.

Ted Taforo & Efajemue - In This Land

Released a few years ago in collaboration with Annie Smart, I found this live, improvisational version in the vault featuring ace guitarist Curtis Gremmel.  I love the bluesy vibe he brings to it with his in-the-moment and spot-on playing. Curtis is in the left channel, and I'm dutifully chording and keeping time center right.
