New Wave / Synth-Pop / 80's

Prolific is an understatement when it comes to the world of Madlib. Diving in head first, people might know him from his most recent work with Freddie Gibbs. Or they might have heard about his acid tinged alter-ego Quasimoto in a dorm room or coffee shop (ahem, imagine you weren't born post 2000). Going further back, a lot first learned of 'The Beatkonducta' with the legendary Hip Hop trio, Lootpack. Regardless of where you learned of him or how you came across any of the ever growing catalog of creations, it is a safe bet there is almost ALWAYS going to be something you never knew was another 'Madlib Invazion'. 

That said, over the last few years I've happily dug around for the often overlooked, or dare I say, forgotten (dude is P-R-O-L-I-F-I-C, no diss) Jazz catalog Madlib has managed to pump out. 'Rugged Tranquility' is my attempt at finding some of the deeper cuts in the abyss, all the while celebrating 20 years of Otis Jackson Jr's Jazz masterpieces. - PK

2013 was a big year for German born badboy Timo Maas. Having returned last year with new album, Lifer, featuring the likes of Katie Cruel, James Lavelle and MIkill Pane, he  now celebrates a decade strong residency at Ibiza's DC10 and welcomes a number of names to his label, Rockets & Ponies. Having carefully crafted a mix to soundtrack the morning after the night before, hit GO and unwind with Timo...

I was watching videos of the Pharoah Sanders concert a few days after the end of the recent We Out Here festival. He was evidently frail and unwell, perhaps even uncomfortable after not setting foot on stage for three years.  

However, even through a phone screen, you couldn't help but get goosebumps once he blew into the saxophone. His charizma, aura, and sheer emotion, as always, shining through. Sadly it was to be his last. The torchbearer of Coltrane's legacy and his one true heir, passed away just a few weeks later. 
  
Born Farrell Sanders in Little Rock, Arkansas, Pharoah picked up the saxophone in his teenage years. He briefly moved to the West Coast to study art, before going to New York to take part in an exciting new jazz scene led by his idol, and later mentor, John Coltrane. Alongside Eric Dolphy, Archie Shepp, and Albert Ayler, he would become one of the most sought-after saxophonists in what was dubbed - avant-garde jazz. Pharoah Sanders joined Coltrane in 1965 and spent the next two years as his protege. After Trane's passing, he continued to take his music to new dimensions, furthering his journey into African and Eastern philosophies and eventually, becoming the face and driving force of what is now known as - spiritual jazz. 

From Alice Coltrane to Floating Points, Pharoah would collaborate with numerous musicians over the decades. However, for this tribute, I decided to focus on strictly his solo output and showcase the mastery of the albums he recorded for Impulse!, Strata East, and Theresa from the late sixties to the early eighties.

Although Kent-based producer Maths Time Joy has been a firm blogosphere favourite for a few years now, he only offered up his first official release last month.

The luscious, melodic 'Atlantis', released on London imprint Tigermilk Recordings, followed a host of free EPs such as 'Hideaway' and 'Lightyears' and a bunch of remixes for the likes of Karma Kid, Submotion Orchestra and Kastle.

After a stellar debut performance at this year’s Coachella festival and two years since their chart-climbing ‘Benediction’ release, Hot Natured unleash new material for Emerald City with the anthemic ‘Off World Lover’ remixed by Will Clarke.

‘Off World Lover’ rides the path between discerning house anthem and enduring pop classic beautifully, the subtleties of Ali Love’s vocals masterfully executed amidst Hot Natured’s trademark futuristic analogue sounds. The labour and evolution of the band is evident in its simplicity and matured approach, and the result an instant classic.

Rising Bristolian producer Will Clarke strips back ‘Off World Lover’ and shapes it for the club circuit through buoyant beats and voluptuous breakdowns, both set for release on Emerald City, the newest label venture from Jamie Jones and Lee Foss, on 18th September.

Arguably the biggest dance music act to break out of the underground circuit, with three well-acclaimed singles under their belt, ‘Reverse Skydiving’, ‘Forward Motion’ and ‘Benediction’, Hot Natured are a four-piece consisting of previously established and accomplished music producers Jamie Jones, Lee Foss, Ali Love and Luca Cazal. Since their debut album smashed the charts at the end of 2013 they have taken an eighteen month hiatus from releasing, burying themselves deep in the studio working on their follow up, set for release in 2016.

The roots of Will Clarke’s sound stem from both his home town of Bristol, and his seasonal home in Ibiza, which have forged a style that fuses the best of Bristol’s bass elements with the upfront house music sensibilities of the white isle. His productions have appeared on labels such as Defected, Dirtybird, Southern Fried and he recently launched his own label, Cut A Rug.

Danilo: "Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis form part of the holy trinity of R&B producers that defined my musical tastes during my formative years. The other two being L.A. Reid and Babyface (LaFace) and Teddy Riley. Of course there were plenty of other music makers out there that played (Prince, Quincy Jones, Kashif etc.) but it was the music of these three that I hunted more than most.
When the opportunity came up with Music Is My Sanctuary to put together a tribute mix honouring their music I lunged at it like an overexcited schoolboy! The only question was what do I put in the mix!? If you’ve heard any of my New Jack Era mixes on Mixcloud you’ll know I have a penchant for extendeds and rare mixes. The problem is there’s no way to include a catalogue of work that spans approximately 35 years and still give those gnarly mixes room to breathe. Prefuse 73, 'A.M.N.H. P.73 SET // Ms.Red Whine Mixxx'

Gary Bartz once quipped, “Norman Connors is not a great drummer, I’m sure he’d tell you that”.

Perhaps said tongue in cheek, Connors was objective enough to realize he wasn’t as gifted as some of his other contemporaries – on the drums, that is. What he did have though, is a knack for producing and an understanding of showmanship and marketability. It is this which makes Norman Connors’ musical journey so interesting, that ability to navigate both sides of his musical world, the spiritual jazz as well as the R&B/soul side.

His recording career can be therefore split into two halves: the first four albums, displaying a more free, afrocentric side, and the part that came after, possibly as a twist, the crossover to the RnB/disco soul that garnered him the praise and success in the mid/late 70s and early 80s.

Tribute to NORMAN CONNORS - Selected by Spacewalker

This is a very emotional tribute to one of my absolute favorite producer and DJ, Phil Asher. He truly had his own unique signature sound and he was perfectly joining the dots between the US and UK scenes. 

Championing the NYC and New Jersey sounds from the earliest days as a DJ, he then started producing and creating a unique blend of raw House grooves that were becoming deeper, jazzier and delicate as the nineties moved along. His experimentations and visions actually led to the foundations of the ’Broken Beat’ and West London sound that exploded in the late nineties with fellow partners that became well known as part of the Reinforced and Bugs In The Attic crews. In the early 2000’s, their Co-Op parties were crucial in spreading this whole new form of music. 

Gone too sone at the age of 50, he left an indelible mark and an impressive precious discography. This mix is separated in two parts featuring his productions and remixes almost on chronological order so you can hear the whole progression and evolution of his music. The first part showcase his early productions and remixes that were mostly influenced by the NYC and Jersey sounds of the time. Around 1995, a more jazzy feel started to surface and became amplified as the years moved on, resulting on some Broken Beat prototypes. On the second part of the mix, focusing on his releases after 2000, you can hear the culmination of his works resulting in one the baddest fusion of House, Broken Beat, Soul and Jazz.
