Nobody Loves A Tortured Soul (Remix)

Hard-hitting latin boogaloo super-group Grupo Magnético formed from
backgrounds in funk, hip-hop, punk and soul, united by a love of Eddie Palmieri,
Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Fania and classic New York salsa. Working with
legendary musicians from Cuba, Venezuela and America (who had played and
recorded with many of the names who'd originally inspired the group), the circle
was complete as the album was mixed in New York by Grammy winning latin
producer Aaron Levinson.

Downtown Edinburgh, Scotland. In a hot and sweaty basement bar below a
Chinese restaurant, an unlikely band of musicians are playing hard-hitting salsa
to an ecstatic crowd.

Grupo Magnético came together from backgrounds of funk, hip-hop, punk and
soul, bonding over a shared obsession with New York salsa. Learning classic
tunes from the masters - Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Fania Allstars, Ray
Barretto, Típica 73 and any other great salsa records they could get their ears on
- they finally took to that basement stage in Henry's Cellar Bar
one Thursday night to pay homage to their heroes, and continued to do so in
what became a ten year residency. During this time the band played under
various lineups and names including Rumba Caliente and Los Cometas before
finally settling on Grupo Magnético. As the band's reputation grew they were
fortunate to work with a rich collection of singers including Ricardo Fernandez
Pompa from Cuba, Lino Rocha from Venezuela and musicians such as New York

trombonist Joe De Jesus, who had played and recorded with many of the
legendary names that had inspired them.

Over time the group, led by Toby "El León" Shippey, developed their own set and
sound. Positivo is a record of these tunes and of those Thursday nights. The
tunes were cut live as a band in three sessions using downtime in a local studio;
tracks from the first session were met with such a positive reaction from New
York and Colombia the band were encouraged to make a full album. These three
sessions were then mixed in New York by Grammy award winning producer
Aaron Levinson.

In the heyday of low-budget television and scrappy genre filmmaking, producers who needed a soundtrack for their commercial entertainments could reach for a selection of library music: LPs of stock recordings whose contents fit any mood required.
 
Unusual Sounds is a deep dive into a musical universe that has, until now, been accessible only to producers and record collectors; a celebration of this strange industry and an examination of its unique place at the nexus of art and commerce.
 
The perfect companion to the David Hollander curated book Unusual Sounds: The Hidden History of Library Music (out now on Anthology Editions), these 20 tracks, encapsulate the niche and fascinating subculture of library music. Genres were spliced, conventions dispensed with, and oftentimes hybrid music of astonishing complexity was produced. Elements of rock, jazz, soul, even twentieth-century avant-garde composition were all utilized, and no stone was left unturned. As a result, some of the best library music defies all categorization, reflecting the individualistic quirks and artistry of the various musicians who made it.

Zel  Zele  launches  with  a  reissue  of  a  holy  grail  by  Ümit  Aksu  Orkestrası  –  a  band  formed  by  Turkish  pianist,  arranger,  songwriter  Ümit  Aksu.  Originally  released  in  1975,  Bermuda  Şeytan  Üçgeni  is  an  outstanding  experimentation  of  forward-thinking  jazz-funk  played  by  some  of  Turkey’s  most  talented  musicians.  Ümit  Aksu’s  work  ranges  from  traditional  Turkish  dance  music  to  jazz  and  funk.  He  worked  his  way  through  his  career  playing  together  with  Süheyl  Denizci  –  an  influential  tenor  saxophone  player  who  became  Ümit  Aksu’s  long  time  collaborator.  He  played  hammond  organ  throughout  Mustafa  Özkent  ve  Gençlik  Orkestrası’s  legendary  psych  funk  album  “Gençlik  ile  Elele”.  He  was  on  synth  duties  on  another  renown  Turkish  psychedelic  soul  classic  “Ikimiz  bir  Fidanız"  by  Kamuran  Akkor.  He  married  Turkish  jazz  singer  Ayten  Alpman  and    wrote  her  cult  love  song  “Ben  Böyleyim”.  Throughout  the  70’s  Ümit  Aksu  put  out  belly  dance  records  with  his  orchestra.  In  1982,  together  with  Süheyl  Denizci,  he  found  TRT  (Turkish  Radio  &  Television  Corporation)  Jazz  Orchestra,  bringing    together  the  country’s  talented  musicians.  TRT  Jazz  Orchestra  still  operates  and  has  a  reputation  for  being  the  key  constitution  pushing  jazz  forwards  in  Turkey.  In  this  release,  Ümit  Aksu’s  orchestra  is  formed  of  Süheyl  Denizci  on  tenor  saxophone,  Merih  Dumlu  on  bass,  Engin  Süelözgen  on  guitar,  Cezmi  Başegmez  on  drums,  Ergüven  Başaran  on  baritone  sax,  Erdoğan  Ergun  and  Engin  Erge  on  trumpet,  Halil  Saçlı  on  trombone,  Veysel  Çadır  on  percussion  and  Ümit  Aksu  on  keyboard  and  synthesizer.  Using  a  FBT  brand  synthesizer,  Ümit  Aksu  creates  otherworldly  cosmic  sound  effects.  At  the  time,  distribution  of  this  equipment  was  very  limited  but  he  was  lucky  to  receive  it  as  a  gift  from  his  son  who  brought  it  from  Italy.  Both  
tracks  in  the  7”  were  arranged  by  Turkish-Armenian  producer,  composer  and  songwriter  Norayr  Demirci,  the  genius  behind  some  of  the  most  well  known  Turkish  pop  and  dance  music  releases  of  the  70s  of  artists  like  Ajda  Pekkan,  Kamuran  Akkor  and  Edip  Akbayram.  Bermuda  Şeytan  Ücgeni  was  recorded  in  Istanbul’s  Studyo  Hayri.
