We asked Associate to tell us a little about the gig, and he dished- so get your knife and fork & enjoy the mix!

The night's venue was in an area called "u street" which is also known as Black Broadway. Feel free to look that up and know that it is both the jazz stomping grounds of yore and now the party strip for Howard University. It is also on a block owned and operated by Ethiopians. Lovely people and they are always quite relaxed on opening/closing times, drink costs, very dark decor in the dance area, and best of all, noise.

A note here on DC techno is warranted. DC people, on average, do not have an appetite for techno. We have a "scene" like most multi culti cities, but not like other places with tall buildings where an evening with techno is something cool. the fact that BR sold out two nights here and was shut down near every other city on the globe should tell you as much as you need to know. People think of music as entertainment, not like a release. By that I mean they are a bit passive about events where they will not know the songs much less the non existent lyrics.

So with that a very, very kind DJ named @DFRNTE started a night called "we don't like happy people". I asked about that name and he wanted to have a counter event for the types who experience the BR and then head to commercial clubs for what they deem "techno". He needed no further explanation. I was in with a mission and purpose to convert the DC clubgoers.

I would need to go with accessible, yet dark. Opening up the night was somewhat of a resident called @nulek. This guy plays it dark and deep, perfect for the room; my set followed him from 11:30 until 1:30. This is the time when most people would physically be there but on their phones trying to find "the real party". My goal was to assure them that "this was the real party and you should stay here because both my person and the tracks I play do not leave a large, forgotten box stored in a closet very often". Ahem. 

So I played a lot of new releases off of @IlianTape along with classics from @Kalexishelby and @djbone. This did get them moving. About 20 minutes in I had to start switching around USBs because of the equipment. No issue for me, but that is the story I am providing as to why I provide no track list. Seriously, if you see a track you like, just tell me. I will figure it out. 

I progress steadily until about 12:30 when I dropped a very swinging @hueymnemonic track that a few people ID'd. It is from the EP with the @sard remix. Whole EP is worth a purchase. Anyway. I knew I needed to drop something so people would stay. My choice (no idea if it even worked mind you) was detroit electro. At around 1AM I was playing this 2pac remix, which I am happy to ID for anyone still reading this blather. I hear people shouting the name of the big club and I am thinking about doubling down on something recognizable. Well I chose aphex twin's "analogue bubblebath". Yes, the classic OG. That got one "oh damn" and numerous "SEE YOU THERE"s as people put on their jackets. I just felt like that transition was something that only could have happened from rifling through 4 playlists instead of the one I planned. 

The reason I chose this mix is also because it is pretty rare that someone makes sure I get more than 2 hours, knowing they will have a good crowd. So I felt like this shows how I pull a crowd along. Being candid, this is the DJ I always wanted to be and it actually comes from a DJ named Erol Alkan. In an interview a long time ago, he explained his approach and spirit is to be ready for any​ crowd. The example he gave was walking into a biker bar in Ireland and leaving with 200 new friends and followers. I knew models would bring bored "dates" and want to yell at each other over what I was playing. Instead of that I was surprised to see them dancing with said dates, at times on the floor. Along with several friends who I spotted making the ugly face, this one was fit to share.

We are honored to conclude our 2025 series with an exquisite US based talent. Detroit’s Craig Gonzalez was drawn to vinyl from a young age, captivated by hip hop and the underground party scene of the 1990s. This fascination quickly evolved into a lifelong passion for DJing, driven by a desire to weave rhythmic layers into compelling, personal stories. 

A self-taught artist, Gonzalez’s collection spans the rich musical evolution of Detroit, including techno, house and a diverse range of other genres. His skills were further honed during his residency at Solar in Ann Arbor, where he shared the decks with renowned artists. Gonzalez has also been a frequent fixture at Movement and other major local events, where he’s shared the stage with legends in the electronic music scene. Since 2022, he has been a resident DJ for the Third Thursday monthly event by Paxahau, further cementing his presence in Detroit’s vibrant nightlife scene. 

Deeply influenced by the musical depth of Detroit and the hypnotic craft of global artists, Gonzalez’s style reflects a rich, interconnected network of like-minded creators. His connection to family, history, and the culture surrounding electronic music gives his sets a profound sensibility, effortlessly translating onto the dance floor.
