The good Friedrich Nietzsche would have said about Soulphiction the following: Michel Baumanns music animates you in such a way because seeing as there is so much nature of every kind in the rhythm. We mean it in regards to his music. This soulfulness and warmth that he brings out from the machines is simply phat like nothing else. A real nature boy who never comes out, he seemingly is. Everything hidden inside of his mind, and channeled into his devices. Yeah yeah, it's okay, I'll open a window to air it out - Michel. Independent from the breeze in the studio, these tones must be released into the world. Musik Krause takes it in. It's about time that the tangent Soulphiction/Jackmate - Jena is for some time now a spirit - and to get it together accordingly. The result of the 'krause-care' from 'philpot-ish' tones is delivered by Mr. Baumann in the form of five songs that are old-school yet modern. When these joints from DJ-Nerdkicker or for example Ben UFO are not sorted into the case, then the next 'Krause Dinner' will be a broom served with mayo.

A1. Ann Arbor  Iggy Pop originally comes from Ann Arbor. Straight up, "Iggy and Moodyman were with Souphiction jamming together in the studio"...finest cinematic-poetry-house-punch from the funk cellar.
 A2. Bass Jam The bass jam comes together with Mr. Rhodes soulfully & slowly in the door. Inside there is a bit of the beat research along with breaks, claps and strobo rattling in a race but everything (please) in slow motion.
 B1. With Attitude A juicy and compact techno shuffling to a neck massage, seasoned with essence of acid "with attitude"-accents and rough 'n' deep sounds that still sound like the freshest techno.
 B2. Detox  Narly Bartley-House on the soulful sunny side. A proper groove is in the body as something for the repeat button-stomper. The saying: "in brevity lies the seasoning" in song format formed for the sensual rave.
 B3 Riot. Party In three minutes cleaned up or at once taken apart, Soulphiction concludes at last with the whip. From the thrown about drink bottle the rest is swigged, smeared lipstick and all...kick out the jams, folks.

Imagine there is a seven-headed rythmic beast with a percussionist, drummer, bassist, keyboardist, two horn players, and a DJ up on the stage embracing the musical totality of the world without any folklore kitsch, its subtlety and urban club grooves crossing various divisions in musical genre.  Feindrehstar is standing on the stage. The studio recordings of this unique Jena-based band have long been known to capture the live energy of their onstage performances. And now Feindrehstar presents their second album named „Love & Hoppiness“ – five years after their brilliant debut „Vulgarian Knights“. A lot has happened in the meantime: countless club and festival gigs, an inspiring African tour as well as countless hours spent working in the studio. „Love & Hoppiness“ matured over three years, a musical puzzle that was composed at different locations – the first recordings developed in the fall of 2012 with Michel Baumann (Soulphiction, Jackmate) and Nik Reiff in Stuttgart. Further overdubs with a trombone, violoncello, guitar and vocals followed at various home studios and conservatories.

 

That's right, vocals have been brought onboard this otherwise instrumental band. Owing to these vocal tracks with Dave Aju, Ebo Taylor and Tina Keserovic on the microphone, Feindrehstar’s sound continues to develop. Jazz, soul and funk vibes shine through on tracks like „Antelope“, a track featuring the vocals and guitar of legendary Ghanaian musician Ebo Taylor.

At first, Taylor thought Feindrehstar rocked too hard – however in the end, things got mellow and he had so much fun that he recorded guitar tracks with enthusiasm.  It was clear right from the start that everything clicked with Dave Aju – the smooth soul-soaked hiphop of „From Bob To Stevie“ standing out on the album.

 

Feindrehstar call their music Krautclub, and the reason ought to become clear in „Caje Sukarije“:  a classic Balkan funk sound taken over by wild synth loops that become fused together in a haze of electro-funk. It is in fact a Roma anthem sung by Tina Keserovic. The album takes a chiller, newer direction with „The New Ballad“, „Blues For Bagdad“ as well as the completely acoustic ballad „Love & Hoppiness Int.“ with cello and clarinet, anchoring the album in a captivating calm.

 

Despite the many new directions, the genre defying yet danceable club sound of Feindrehstar remains. „Love & Hoppiness“, „Deep Horse“, „Shake That“ und „Night Rainer Diskodub“ show once again that after 15 years of rocking dance floors, Feindrehstar's energy hasn't diminished.  Feindrehstar will ensure that clubs and festivals will be well supplied with their estatic performance into the future.

Brendon Moeller has long been a purveyor of authentic dub-infused Techno since stepping onto the scene via his 2006 ‘Sweetspot / Humpback’ EP via Echocord and has since gone on to release on reputable imprints such as Third Ear, Kimochi Sound, Delsin’s Ann Aimee, Mule Musiq and of course his very own Steadfast. Here though Moeller makes a welcome return to where it all began with some fresh material for Echocord’s Colour sub-label.
‘Caravan’ takes the lead on the release and in typical Brendon Moeller fashion we’re treated to densely layered dub chords, throbbing subs and expansive atmospherics whilst robust drums drive the composition along. ‘Magic City’ follows and ups the energy levels even further with pounding industrial drums layered underneath billowing dub stabs and eerie drones.
‘Magic City In Dub’ follows and as the name suggests offers up a reduced take on the composition, dropping the tempo and shining light on the billowing echoes of the original whilst stirring in some off-kilter rhythsm and additional processing for good measure. Lastly, ‘Departure’ closes the package, with haunting synth drones, bumpy rhythms and murky vocals wandering throughout the seven-minute composition.

The towering crane looked down over the skyscrapers in motion. The construction looked almost alien like from such great height, a rugged scattering of metal framework, steel beams and concrete. Vertigo had started to kick in as he sat perched atop the city, his tiny cabin did little to offer comfort or security from the pouring rain which battered against the glass window. The raindrops sat laden upon the frame, he watched them drip one by one down the pane. Only a few more hours to go....

Further explorations into leftfield electronic rhythms are chartered on Cin Cin’s seventeenth release.  Bringing together two unique and talented artists on one release, Vanessa Worm and Sau Poler serve up four delectable cuts.

Vanessa Worm, debuts on Cin Cin, with one release for Optimo Music already behind her (and a full length album coming soon on Optimo).  ‘SLASH’ is built upon a drum machine heavy disco beat and a rampage of acid tones, battered vocal hits and a seriously funky groove.  Spacey punk funk business!  ‘444 – 000’ is also delivered in spirited fashion, a riotous blend of electro pop and heavy tech-funk is offered up, with Worm in playful mode, mashing vocals and samples together to marvelous effect.  

Sau Poler has been on our radar for sometime, following a string of infectious releases for Atomnation and Modern Obscure Music.  Hazy, tropical auras are deployed on ‘Primitiu’, as a raw 303 bassline cuts through a vivid sonic wilderness.  ‘Lunatic Decay’ also plunders a dense and equatorial sound, with a hypnotizing percussive rhythm holding steady a cloud of experimental sound design and studio inventiveness.

Started as a FAT sister label, with an eccentric bent and experimentally “too intellectual” with its heads out the window. Above all, a raw cut and clever yet boozy funk understanding from Metaboman the platform was, always MK, but a shared stylistic closeness through Robag Wruhme. In the present as an emancipated partner alongside FAT on the same level. Here comes about the stuff which is a bit club dweller-ish outsider (!): functional, experiment, melodic lone purloiner, slicked up snarky paired with a jazzy panorama and frivolic understanding of song hand in hand. As special tid-bits come to light next to Metaboman along with Krause Duo and Robag Wruhme and other sonic artists like Ian Simmonds, Schleck und Stecker, Portable, Someone Else on Musikkrause the shine of the speaker boxes.
   
With a wide awake view to the future, the right mélange of tradition, down-to-earth instincts and the adventurist appetite bend the parameters in the direction of…wrong-headed sympathetic humanity in a paradise of electronic music brought to tears, scrumptious, freak-out and fleshly depth. There is also the exception without the cemented delusions of grandeur…how does the German sitcom main character Stromberg put it: “If you allow the butter to be taken from the bread, then eventually you won’t even have the bread!”
