Youth Stand Up!

Youth Stand Up! is a collaborative recording project between Glasgow’s Green Door Studio, Lebeha Drumming Center in Hopkins, Belize, and the Tafi Cultural Institute based in Tafi Atome, Ghana. The results of the collaboration will be a ten track album released on Autonomous Africa in autumn 2015. All proceeds from the Youth Stand Up! album sales will be split between Tuteme Band, Belize and Tafi Cultural Institute’s fund to build their recording studio and cultural centre.

The aim of the project was to see what would happen if young musicians from opposite sides of the world were given the opportunity to cook up a musical melting pot of West African, Caribbean, and contemporary Glaswegian music. When Green Door Studio’s Emily MacLaren approached JD Twitch from Optimo Music/Autonomous Africa with the idea of an international album project involving musicians spread across three different continents he said he would happily release the results.

The studio recruited a total of 11 young musicians from Glasgow bands such as Golden Teacher, Whilst, Psychic Soviets, and Froth to work with 7 young Ghanaian musicians making Hiplife and Borborbor music and 5 young Belizian musicians from Tuteme Band, who played traditional Garifuna music at Lebeha Drumming Center. The Glaswegian musicians came from a variety of musical backgrounds including electronic music, post punk, and free jazz, with the youngest still studying music at school.

While Ghana’s rich history of Highlife music is well documented, the traditional Borborbor music of the Volta region, where Tafi Atome is situated, has not been given much exposure. And in Belize, the traditional rhythms of the Garifuna Afro Caribbean community fuse ancestral West African roots with Latin American energy. The Ghanaian and Belizean musicians, whilst practicing traditional BorBorBor and Garifuna rhythms, also shared a strong passion for Jamaican Dancehall and international Hip Hop.

@Scherbe experienced his musical socialisation in the triangle of Karlsruhe, Heidelberg and Mannheim and relocated to Dresden only in 2009. 

Considering the fact that he is a child of the American occupation zone it comes as no surprise that he drew inspiration from Afro-American culture for his music and for his cultural principles in general. Although he has a colourful musical biography skipping back and forth between Pop, Hip-Hop, Underground House and Drum’n’Bass he always seems to come back to his most important sources of inspiration, namely J Dilla, Theo Parrish and Pépé Bradock. Besides his solo activities and live performances, he also produces together with his buddy @Peter-Clamat as @Citizen-Funk whose records are released on Clamat’s label @Big-Bait-Records.

This 4 track selection is purest scherbe-sound (below 120bpm) for hazy autumn days and nights, not only for clubs but heavy on the low rumbling in a smoked out basement ! 

"Let it cool" opens with the perfect percussion-progressive-lift and a weird japanese 90’s sample, surrounded by Scherbe’s favorite synth Korg Wavestation. "Van Purgis" goes “wonky” like we love at Musique Large’s with this snare “giving the track a broken feel perfect for after-hours in small clubs where people are not so drunk but stoned as f*ck !” from the german artist words. Then the very strong, melodic and acid-like bassline of "Cup of p" hits the floor and your brain at the same time. This groovy and shuffling drums from mpc-diskettes needs repeated listening to grow-up, but "Slice in the city" is here to relax, with it deep sample from old disco/new wave, endless groove and georgeous „metallic“ open hihat.

Worldwide Award winners First Word Records are pleased to welcome back Souleance; a duo that have been releasing music with us for a decade now, and triumphantly returning to the fold with some brand new music for 2020. This track is the first taste of their forthcoming vinyl / digital EP, 'Les Mouches', their first release for First Word since the acclaimed beat-tape 'French Cassette' from early last year.

Expanding on the original Normand-Parisian super-duo of Fulgeance and Soulist, the Souleance crew now includes Vincent Choquet on synths and Guillaume Rossel on drums as part of their live outfit. Whilst sonically their style remains unchanged, the formation into a full band sees the Souleance sound become bigger, more realised and more formidable than ever.
This first track 'Aquarelle' (meaning watercolours), contains more layers than a Bob Ross painting. With its various elements splayed across its aural canvas, it's four minutes of funk presented in Souleance's inimitable way. Shuffling around the 110bpm mark, this piano-lead piece has an almost latin jazz feel in places, accompanied by a hefty bassline, assorted synths and subtle scratches riding atop of a disco-tinged 4/4 beat. A groove marinated in nostalgia whilst managing to sound current, this is another dance-floor sure-shot from the French crew.

Previous support from: OkayPlayer, Bill Brewster, BBC 6 Music's Gilles Peterson, Tom Ravenscroft & Huey Morgan, and various DJs on Worldwide FM, NTS & Le Mellotron, 'Aquarelle' is released June 19th 2020 digitally worldwide, whilst the EP 'Les Mouches' will follow in early September on vinyl.

Aeshim is a new solo project by Adam Scrimshire. "2BCM1" delves deep into Scrimshire’s love of broken beat. References flow from DKD’s ‘Future Rage’, while also calling on influences from Herbie Hancock to Roni Size. Tumbling kick drums fight with fizzing and insistent bass as they give way to sustained strings and soulful vocals.  Due for release on June 24th, "2BCM1" will be the first taste from Aeshim’s debut album, ‘Or…’.

Leaving live drums and acoustic instruments behind in favour of making tracks with a more immediate, speedy, synthesised approach, the Aeshim experiments happen through strict time limitations. His debut album under this pseudonym, ‘Or…’, was written and produced in the first two weeks of lockdown in the UK.

Two previous EPs, also deliberately made within short one-week sessions, explored his love of broken beats and electronic bass lines and received love and support from Jamz Supernova (BBC Radio 1Xtra), EVM128 (WorldwideFM) and Le Mellotron. 

The debut album takes time to explore these ideas and more, from ambient soundscapes, to dubbed out piano sounds and growling sub arpeggios. And though electronic in form, there are still Scrimshire’s soul influences threaded throughout, clipped vocal harmonies and Rhodes pianos take a place inside the roomy drum loops and sizzling Juno chords.

“I’ve called it ‘Or…’ because the world is at such a pivotal moment of potential progress. Return to normal, or pursue change. Accept what was, or demand something better. ‘Or…’ is also part of a more personal question about my own involvement in that, measuring the person I was and have been, against the person I need to be."

On July 3rd, Aeshim’s ‘Or…’ will be released on Albert’s Favourites, the label formed by Adam, who also mixed and mastered the album, his Modified Man partner Dave Koor, and Jonny Drop, who created the artwork. The label has released projects by Hector Plimmer, Rōnin Arkestra, Huw Marc Bennett, The Expansions, Scrimshire, and Jonny Drop.
