Stand Up

'Get Me There' is the first track on TOWNS debut album 'Get By' due [insert date] from Bristol's much lauded DIY label Howling Owl Records. The album is available physically on limited vinyl and cd as well as digitally from online retailers [insert pre-order link]. 

In keeping with this DIY affair 'Get By' was recorded in Bristol with friends and fellow label mates Dom Mitchison (Velcro Hooks) and was mastered by Oliver Wilde, with additional help in the early stages by Hugo Bishop (Oliver Wilde). The album also features appearances from Robin Stewart (The Naturals), Dom Mitchison (Velcro Hooks) and Richard Clarke (Scarlett Rascal) on penultimate track 'Everyone's Out'. While the album artwork was taken by girlfriend and former member of GuMM Lily Cook.

'Get By' sees childhood friends TOWNS create a spaced out suburban escapism that combines the experimental guitar sounds and DIY aesthetics of psych and shoegaze with the melodies of 60s and 90s guitar pop. Seeing the excitement of rock’n’roll as a way to escape the everyday humdrum of growing up in Weston-super-Mare, they believe in the beauty, glamour and power of ‘proper’ pop music.

Already in their short career TOWNS have experienced many highs and lows and know how volatile the music industry can be. Being lauded by NME as a best new band of 2011, based purely on two demoes before they had even played their first show, to their former booking agent running off with over £1000 of the bands money, virtually crippling the band, to the high of working with legend Owen Morris (Oasis, Verve), only for the label paying the bill to get swallowed up by a major. It's been pretty eventful but TOWNS are proud to be finally sharing their debut album with you.

Brighton scuzzy indie pop fivesome will release the Rory Attwell-produced song on a split 7" with the Cardiff punks through London DIY label Odd Box Records on 21 July.

With the release of “Doppelganger” Spanish trio Jupiter Lion, are still in search of all things celestial, danceable and psychedelic. The single is a lead-in to the band’s follow up to 2013’s highly cinematic and proggy debut ‘Silver Mouth’, due out on BCore later this year.

“Doppelganger” is another long form voyage for the band, the gazing brilliance of vintage synths and high energy jazz fills is like a cruise in the galaxy of kraut-rock. It drones with the chirpy minimalism of Japan’s Nisennenmondai, yet experiments with quivering keys and fuzz that even recalls My Bloody Valentine. The songs climaxing solo of 8-bit walls of sound and perceptual distortion suggests the forthcoming sophomore will be traveling fearlessly into spacey unexplored territory. 

The bands analog approach to electronic music sets them apart in their native Valencia, a place where DJ nightlife reigns supreme and alternative pop is in short supply. Long stints in the studio as well as a death in their family has put the bands live performances on hold, but not without increasing requests for their live shows. This May marks their third appearance at Primavera Sound in Barcelona, with tours as support for both Spectrum and Dead Skeletons already wrapped.

Alone as purveyors of a futurist style that avidly shirks the use of laptops for performance, Jupiter Lion are remarkably forward thinking for the human presence they embody with electronics. Living in the dystopian future of their own country’s paralyzed economy, the members see their cosmic journeys through song become their escape from a sci-fi world become real.

Into The Ether

Fortuna POP! are delighted to announce the signing of London-based neo-psychedelic pop group The Proper Ornaments. Mining the rich territories of The Velvet Underground and The Beach Boys, their debut album proper "Wooden Head" features fourteen thrillingly taut and melodic pop songs with a deep, dark undercurrent. Comprised of Argentinian Max Claps and James Hoare (also of Veronica Falls) – who both sing and write the songs – and joined by Daniel Nellis (bass) and Robert Syme (drums), the band have already shared stages with the likes of Real Estate, Woods, Crystal Stilts, Toy and Metronomy.

Maximo Claps arrived in London in 2008 on a one-way ticket from Buenos Aires, aided by former Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham. Oldham had produced a record by Claps' Argentinian band of the time but the group had fallen apart in a mess of drugs and acrimony and Claps' family were attempting to intervene by sending him to a mental hospital. The only option seemed to be to flee the country. As Claps recalls, "The day before flying to the UK I got run over by a car and had to escape hospital in order to make it so I arrived with bandages and my head all stitched up."

A few weeks later Max walked into the vintage clothes shop where James Hoare sat behind the counter reading a book on The Velvet Underground, and attempted to cause a diversion while his kleptomaniac girlfriend stole a pair of boots. “She didn't steal them in the end,” says Max. “They weren't her size”. However, the shop assistant and the would-be accomplice bonded over a mutual love of the Velvets, Love, Felt and West Coast pop and began writing together, taking their name from a song by the pioneering soft psych band The Free Design. In 2010 they released their first single, "Recalling", following it up with a five-song EP for London label No Pain in Pop. In 2013 Lo Recordings released all their output to date on a collection titled "Waiting for the Summer", followed by the single “First Step Out” in February 2014.

Their new album was recorded at a studio in Hackney, as well as at home in their old flat in Whitechapel on a broken 8-track reel-to-reel bought off eBay from an angry guy who threatened to shoot them and chop off their balls when they attempted to return it - a terrifying experience for a pair of skinny indie boys. Taking inspiration from Berlin-era Lou Reed, Jesus and Mary Chain’s “Darklands”, The Television Personalities and West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, the songs are breezy and easy on the ear, with sublime harmonies and chiming Byrdsian guitar, but with a darker twist and a pervasive air of melancholy. Stand-out tracks include the beautiful but sad “Summer’s Gone” (about mental illness), “Magazine” (an upbeat number written from the perspective of a bullet in the barrel of a gun) and “You’ll See” (about how when you die you’ll see everyone you know, all there lined up in a row).

With "Wooden Head", The Proper Ornaments prove that it is still possible to create an album of pure pop perfection. Max's girlfriend may not have stolen the boots, but The Proper Ornaments are about to steal your heart.

Sailor & I are back with their latest productions for Life and Death. The two original tracks, while very different in moods, both share lush productions and a dramatic musical storytelling not often found in a typical dance release. While Boys & Girls offers a slowed-down mournful and yet beautiful nostalgic tale of childhood days gone by, Turn Around comes straight out of the gate like a racehorse on fire, flanked by strong strings and a vocal that pleads a case for love that comes straight from the heart.

And of course rounding out the release is arguably one of the most anticipated tracks of the summer. Ever since it first started falling on people’s ears earlier this year, the Âme remix of “Turn Around” has been the high point of sets by Tale of Us, Dixon, Mano Le Tough as well as the few select others that have had their hands on it up until this point. It’s been giving goosebumps to club goers everywhere and with good reason — this is Âme at their finest, taking the song and extending it into an epic masterpiece that works wonders on a dancefloor while never losing the bewitching essence of the original.

Sailor & I – Turn Around

Algernon Doll release their third album, Omphalic, via Struggletown Records on 30th June 2014.

Omphalic sees Algernon break out from his one man band persona as he continues to hone and perfect an alternative guitar sound that harks back to a sound reminiscent of early 90’s grunge. At just 24 years old, Ewan Grant is carving out a place in the hearts and minds of fans and critics alike and has already released two critically acclaimed albums, Camomile and Citalo-pop, that has seen him compared to the likes of Elliott Smith. On Omphalic Algernon Doll really cuts loose and pulls on influences ranging from Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins to The Jesus Lizard and Mudhoney to produce an up-tempo, driven rock album that is both rich in its abrasive qualities as well as creating memorable hooks and choruses that are willingly addictive.

Tracks such as first single Spilt Milk Perfume, ‘Justine’ and ‘Candy Striped’ offer a reflective sound with chiming guitars, poignant lyrics and unforgettable hooks that are comparable to the likes of Sebadoh in their pomp. While, ‘Tamed’, ‘Suicide’ and ‘Fellate’ have an angriness and causticity that has Nirvana written all over it. 

Omphalic was mastered by Bob Weston of the mighty Shellac, who has production credits on a host of  classic records such as Nirvana’s In-Utero, Shipping News, Missions of Burma, Chavez, June of 44, Rachel’s and LCD Soundsystem. Algernon Doll features Ewan (guitar & vocals), Wull Swales (bass & backing vocals) and Owen Wicksted (drums) with Ewan and Tom Mitchell also playing drums on the record.

To support the release, Algernon Doll will be playing a number of shows in the UK as well as the Radio 1 Big Weekend and aims to record more tracks, this time with Steve Albini, at the end of this year or early next year.

Crazy Town

In the wake of their 2011 album Strange Hearts, the three members of Secret Cities branched off in different directions. Charlie Gokey delved into Roy Orbison's ballads about losers in love while becoming a civil liberties attorney in Washington, D.C. Alex Abnos locked in to New Orleans soul masters like King Floyd & Dr. John as he became a journalist in New York City. And Marie Parker became a teacher in the band's spiritual home of Fargo, North Dakota.

Having met at band camp and on an internet message board, the trio had made music together for nine years without ever living together in the same city. After recording two albums and a handful of singles via email, they decided it was finally time to enter a real studio where they could play and record together in real time. They chose San Francisco's Tiny Telephone studio, where Jay Pellicci manned the controls for a week-and-a-half of the most spontaneous, democratic, and visceral recording of their lives. They emerged with Walk Me Home, an album that finally reflects their live chemistry and their diverging lives and musical tastes. Appropriately enough -- it took years of traveling in different directions for Secret Cities to make an album that brought them closer together than ever.
